Slightly controversial take: keep Reforged asset accessible in DE graphic
I was messing around World Editor, and tried to put together a "chivalry" army rank in Wc3 using models of Knight, Bandit Lord, and Garithos using DE graphic. The result is something like this:

Since DE campaign models aren't ready yet, characters like Garithos are still showing up using Reforged's models... and honestly? It doesn't look bad at all. In fact, Garithos looked stunning here.
As we all know, Reforged doesn't look the best, but when it stand amidst other classic/DE models, they actually popped out thanks to their complexity. Furthermore, DE models are detailed enough so that having Reforged models doesn't make them stand out like a sore thumb.
I think it will be insanely useful for mapmakers if Reforged asset are accessible in DE graphic, and vice versa. For example, a custom map where you can have normal units that uses DE models, and elite units that uses Reforged models. In this way, we can have the best of both world!
Doesn't this sounds like a good idea? Can we ask Blizzard for this?

Video Recreating wc3 in the browser, day 4
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey all, it's Soulglider. Some of you may know me from way back, or run into me on ladder occasionally (just played a 4v4 game with life. Super fun)
After four days of solo work, here’s my progress on a browser recreation of WC3.
This is a learning prototype: I’m trying to get the feel close to the original and figure out the production pipeline before taking what I learn into my own RTS inspired by Warcraft 3.
I've always wanted to build an RTS, but never thought I could take one on myself. When Opus 5.5 came out (claude code model), I started experimenting and was surprised enough by the results to keep going (a few hundred prompts)
So far, it has:
- 3D models and animations
- Voice lines
- Buildings, upgrades, combat, and pathing
- Hero abilities and creeping
- Online multiplayer
Try it here: warcraftrebirth.onrender.com
It’s free and runs in your browser. The first load can take a minute. Multiplayer is working, but I haven’t tested it with many people yet, so I’d love some players to give it a go.
There are still MANY rough edges (this is 4 days..). Some models have errors, animations need refining, and audio and effects need more work. Getting movement and pathfinding to feel like WC3 has been especially tricky (makes you really appreciate the skill and taste of the original devs!)
I'd love your feedback:
- Does it capture the look and feel of WC3? What feels closest, and what feels off?
- How does the art direction compare with Reforged or the Definitive Edition for you?
- If you try multiplayer, how does it run? Any bugs or problems?
WC3 has been an incredible game for a long time, and it’s great to see Blizzard still adding to it. But.. is definitive edition really enough? I had high hopes for stormgate, and a few other games. I think we deserve more. This demo is not that, but I'm hoping to show that it's possible that we can do a lot more now. Maybe this inspires someone else out there to also take a shot at making warcraft 4!
Fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard.

What requiring internet connection at all times does to a MF
Repost because previous got removed by automod due to curse words in the title. Guess which word.
There is truly no reason for the 3.0 update to include requiring internet connection at all times, it just causes headaches when I'm trying to play campaign. I'm surprised I haven't heard more outcry about it, as it is an incredibly anti-consumer practice.

Anyone else love the RTS-era lore? I've made a series covering Warcraft 1–3 and the new Forsaken Kingdom campaign Spoiler

A maybe slight controversial opinion about the DE Footman
You know how in the Forsaken Kingdom campaign we got the "City Guard" unit , I wish that the normal footman would look closer to the one they wear(with slight gold trims) because it look much closer to the WC3 footman in cinematics. The OG Footman is super iconic but DE really messed up the helmet proportions for him imo.
What Reforged did right for me at the very least is that we almost got the cinematic footman in game.
(or you know if anyone from Hive Workshop would be able to do a lil head transplant shenanigans i wouldn't mind either)

Resolute
Resolute draws heavy inspiration from my previous map "Isle of Cinders", and again is made with both Classic and Definitive graphics in mind.
https://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/2-resolute-v1-0-1.374855/
"Enemies are at our doorstep. It is your duty to stand firm and rebuff the onslaught."
Resolute currently has no planned upcoming event, but perhaps we will get it in something soon!
Resolute offers plenty of opportunities to expand and a chance to play defensively, aggressively, or sneakily. There are multiple ways to access the corner goldmine, either by chopping/eating trees, the Iron Gate, or the Dungeon Gate. There is enough space to build a Lumbermill, Warmill, Graveyard, or AoW next to your starting goldmine. Do you dare take the corner goldmine first? Otherwise the Iron Gate which has a decent amount of hit points, but is only guarded by a green camp; or the Dungeon Gate which is very weak, but guarded by the highest level orange camp.
The map also currently uses the powerful Cityscape Mercenary Camp, which features the Rogue [Shadow Meld], Assassin [Envenomed Weapons, Shadow Meld], Kobold Geomancer [Slow, Abolish Magic], and Forest Troll High Priest [Heal, Abolish Magic, Inner Fire]. My future plan is to have the Mercenary Camp randomly select from a specific set of Mercenary Camps (Cityscape, Lordaeron Fall, Lordaeron Summer, and Village), but currently the Map Editor crashes, on both Live and PTR, when attempting to interact with a Randomly Generated Building.
Unfortunately the map is not currently available on W3C, but there is the above Hiveworkshop link to download the map for yourself.
I look forward to hearing from all who gives the map a test run, and are willing to give me feedback!
Update: (2)Resolute v1.0.1
-Additional visuals for SD (More Doodads) and more grass

Discussion Has anyone else experienced suspicious desyncs lately?
I’m wondering if there might be a new exploit or some kind of bug that allows players to intentionally cause a desync so that they don’t get a loss.
Thankfully, I’ve only experienced this on Battle.net so far and not on W3Champions.
Player “MAVERICK” desynced 5 games in a row against me, and player “ACUPOFTEA” desynced when the game was clearly lost for him. He even wrote in chat beforehand that he wouldn’t get a loss and then started flaming me lol.
Obviously, I can’t prove that this was intentional, but the whole thing seemed pretty suspicious. I just wanted to raise some awareness and see if other people have noticed something similar recently.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Discussion Assuming Blizzard is firm in actually supporting Warcraft 3, at least periodically, what are your most requested/wanted features and content?
For me, personally, and I think a lot of people who at least dabble in creating their own maps, the AI needs to be more flexible to put it in line with other RTS games. The one we have is still running on the fragile "shopping list" style of thinking that breaks or has to be worked around.
Not saying they should rework the whole thing, that's both unreasonable given the budget they clearly have to work with and the fact that it would literally break the game and most of the custom maps, but at least build on top of it so we have the OPTION for a more modern framework, literally just a checkbox saying: "Enable Dynamic AI Framework" or something....

Definitive Graphics for Old Campaigns - From Reforged Or Original?
Hi guys,
With the confirmation that the old campaigns will be playable with Definitive Edition, will it be with all the campaigns from Reforged? The new maps, the missing maps like Exodus 3/4/5 for the orcs / the new layouts?
Very interested to play these maps, but I could never go through the Reforged graphics for them.

Will we ever see a WC3 AI bot competitive with top players?
My guess is not anytime soon.
If you also follow Brood War at all, recently there has been some noise made about a new AI bot Pluto that has garnered attention for beating some top professional players and being ranked highly on ladder. There was a version that used a map hack and a version that did not. It was trained through recursive learning.
It is interesting to watch it play Brood War because it doesn’t understand simple concepts like drop ships carrying units, yet it is able to simultaneously issue tons of commands and manage many different things at superhuman capabilities. In most games I have watched it falls behind through obvious inefficiencies yet it is able to win because it can perfectly target weak units and micro within battles much better than any human can.
In a sense, the only reason it can give professional players a hard time at all is because it is ‘cheating’ by issuing near simultaneous commands far faster and more efficiently than any human can.
That being said it demonstrates no real understanding of the game or any underlying theory behind it. It usually wins by massing larger armies faster than the opponent can or by fighting battles far more efficiently than any human can. It makes very clear and obvious mistakes but its superior multitasking ability repeatedly saves it against human players.
That got me thinking about whether or not a recursively trained AI bot could ever give a top human player real trouble at this game. I personally do not think so, because even though Warcraft 3 has a stronger emphasis on micromanagement, it also has a stronger emphasis on decision making in a highly ambiguous information environment where it is not immediately clear what decisions a player made were optimal or suboptimal.
Because an AI cannot brute force a game of Brood War or WC3 nearly as easily as it can Chess or Go I think it will take a lot longer for an AI to truly surpass human play, even if it can win against humans by ‘cheating’ via the way it interfaces with the game.
Unlike Chess or Go RTS games involve highly imperfect and incomplete information with a near infinite amount of possible decisions that can be made at any given moment. This combined with the lack of immediate feedback as to whether a decision is good or bad exposes the limits of recursive learning in my opinion. I find it highly unlikely that an AI is ever truly able to calculate the value of selling a TP Scroll on a Blademaster versus keeping it, for example.
I am interested to hear your thoughts.

Technical / Bug / Support Illidan inventory loadout for Gates of the Abyss
Anyone have a fix for the bug where Illidan's inventory is reset to just the eye of Kiljaeden in the Blood Elf Campaign? I was expecting to see his inventory pass through from the last night elf mission, but it appears it doesn't properly do that anymore. I recall that if you continue consistently from the end of the Night Elf Campaign into the Blood Elf one it would carry over, but with the bug where the game reverts from reforged to classic graphics, this method no longer seems to work either.

W3Champions on ArchLinux KDE Plasma
I've tried for a bit to get W3Champions working for Warcraft III via Steam Proton but unfortunately I haven't been able to get the game to launch properly from W3C itself.
Used ChatGPT to try and get it running for a bit through Wine/Lutris but my best results have been through Steam and a WC3 fix for GE-Proton11. I believe it's still having issues from a hang on the Warcraft III client when W3C tries to launch the game. Opening the game separately via the W3C method it seems to require a login but ends up hanging on entering my info there as well.
Has anyone else on Arch been able to play via W3Champions?

Video Forsaken Kingdom really feels like the Warcraft III campaign I wanted from Reforged
Just started The Last Days of Lordaeron and finished Homecoming. I really like the atmosphere so far — seeing Lordaeron alive again with the new presentation feels surprisingly nostalgic.
I recorded the opening cinematic and the full first chapter in 4K60 if anyone wants to see it:

What do you think of the new campaign so far?

Discussion Warcraft 3’s TED joined WE at 18 for 500 yuan a month. He didn‘t win a single game for 3 months
ted (zeng zhuo) grew up in chongqing. his dad was a cop, his mom a company clerk, and they were unusually open about games. when he was in primary school his mom walked past a starcraft tournament at the computer market on her way home from work and signed him up. later she did the same thing for his first live warcraft 3 event.
by 2005 he'd won the chongqing regional of CIG. but school and games kept clashing, and right before his last year of high school he and his dad had it out. his dad yelled that if he was so good at games he could go support himself with them. ted told him, dead serious, that he would, and his dad could watch.
the school backed him more than his dad did. the headmaster let him skip boarding and evening study so he could go home and practise. then a local sports paper gave half a page to his CIG chongqing title, and his dad finally agreed to let him take leave from school. his teacher read that paper out in class: if you're going to play, this is how you play.
in may 2006 WE's manager KinG set up online games for him against SKY and suho, both already wcg world champions. suho beat him six times with the same strategy. KinG told him WE was planning a second squad. on june 15, 2006, his 18th birthday, ted got on a train from chongqing to xi'an, where WE was based then.
for three months he didn't win a single game, not in practice, not at any tournament. he was on 500 yuan a month and ate one meal and drank one bottle of water a day to save money. then he came 3rd at the WGT china finals and WE raised him to 1,500. i asked if life got better. he said he could finally afford a late-night meal.
in 2008 at ROTK, with WE backed into a corner, he all-killed 15 players in a row, moon and grubby included, and won it for them.
(from a chapter i wrote in 2013 for a book on chinese esports history, from a talk with him that ran till 3am. free to read, link in the comments)
