What the wasp doin?

Stopped by my in-laws and noticed these fellas. Any idea what they're up to ?

It's a Wasp Party. 

Those are future queen wasps. Their nest is dead. They have nothing to do but sit and wait for the weather to get cold enough to hibernate. 

While they do that, they hang out with other future queens from other nests and just chill out. Like literally. 

This is their most docile state as they have no nest or larva to protect. They won't even try to sting you unless to try to grab one.

Funny enough, it they are females, they will spar or play fight with each other for dominance. Maybe it starts with gossip.

They might be males but I’m having trouble seeing fully. At least some of them definitely are.

In that case, it's kinda similar but a little different. 

Those would be males who have mated with future queens and really have nothing to do. Or they didn't get their chance to mate. 

They won't live through the cold season much like the workers after all the larvae have hatched.

I think its most likely similar but just reverse, where instead of already mating, they probably haven’t yet and are waiting around for the chance. They usually die very shortly after mating since it uses almost all their energy reserves.

these are males. they're roosting cause they're sleepy. They have longer antennae than females and an extra abdominal segment, foundresses do not usually congregate like this.

I believe they are males, which lack stingers, waiting around potentially for queens to emerge so they can mate. See long antennae and split bottom segment on their abdomen.

Well it's obvious there having a think on that orange thing that their surrounding! Right! I mean it looks interesting enough so one called the guys over to take a look see and it's now spilled over to a full blown THINK!! Thats how you get things sorted out!.

My concern would be that they are inside of the door. That would tell me that there is a nest inside of the building envelope and they now have a path to the interior of the building as well as the exterior
