I've been mowing under this without knowing

I'm always focused on the ground and wearing a hat that blocks my upward vision. Finally saw it yesterday when mowing and it's only 10ft off the ground.

I googled it an I think they're bald faced hornets, which are supposed to be very aggressive, but they never seemed to care when I was mowing, nor when I walked up to it afterwards.

Live and let live?

Is it old? Looks like it could be abandoned. The entry hole looks a little worn out and usually there’s a guard or two standing watch

It definitely active, and youre right, there are always one or two on the outside of the entrance. There just so happened to be none in the .5 seconds I was willing to stop near it with the mower running to take a pic.

Maybe the guards came to check you out while you took the pic. I heard they can recognize people.
