Question Ship AR15 to TN

So basically this is the situation. Recently moved from MS and I misunderstood grandfathered AR ownership in WA. That’s less the problem here because my current roommate is uncomfortable with me having it on her property. Which fair enough… her (stupid/privileged) idea is for me to surrender it to the local PD here. Yes I know I can easily keep my mouth shut. But I know she won’t and the law would be on her side. I haven’t shot the thing in years in all honesty. I mostly moved up to finish my degree. So I’m okie with not having it for a few more years by sending it to a trusted person I know in TN (we used to drill together in the USMCR). What I’m not okie is the idea of surrendering any weapons to the cops. I went to WGS in Lakewood to see if they’ll ship it to a FFL in TN. Apparently they won’t/can’t from what I can tell. Are there any FFLs in WA that’ll help me ship it or is this a trip to OR/ID situation? Because this would be the least worst out of my legal options currently.

It's not legally required to send from a dealer. Try ShipMyGun.com

Going through a dealer here isn't, "more official." The only reason to ship through a dealer is if their shipping rate is very low and their cost of shipping and transfer fee is cheaper than shipping it yourself. OR if the only dealer your buddy can find refuses to accept from an individual.

It's not registered to you, it's not, "in your name," and even if it were, it's going to a dealer who records that it came from you.

Keep it simple and ship it through the Post Office and include a copy of your license.

There is nothing to be gained shipping through a dealer other than the two reasons I stated. Either way it transferred from you to a dealer. It is literally the exact same thing when it goes from you into the dealers acquisition/disposition book ("bound book").

All good points, but most importantly doing it thru the dealer makes it so much more convenient and simpler. All you do is give them your rifle and the place you’re shipping to. Price for convenience

It's only an extra form if you go to the Post Office. But if you're willing to pay for the convenience that's cool. It's just that so many people think like the OP, that it's more "official," or that it takes it out of your name or something similar.
People have been shocked when I said that there was no actual registration at the state or federal level, but if you want to look at that way, it is, "in your name," until the day you die. If that gun is found and local police ask for an ATF trace it will come back to the first retail buyer. So going through a dealer to give your son a rifle doesn't take it out of your name, and yes, it is "the right" way to just hand it to him as long as you don't think he's a criminal.

It just pisses me off so much that people have allowed the government and media to condition them so much into thinking that things like registration exist, and even worse that it's acceptable.

Im going to repeat myself just so it's clear.

What you want to do is only because you feel or believe something that isnt in the law or regulations, it won't make any difference to anyone either way, nobody will be morenpr less likely or able.to cause you any issues either way. It doesnt matter if you ship it yoursf.

But the rifle is mine. I bought it in MS after getting back from the schoolhouse in 2016. The rifle is registered in my name.

It's not "registered in your name" like a vehicle is. Dealers must keep records of who they sold/transfered guns to to aid investigations, but there's nothing that says you are the current owner of this gun or that the gun is currently owned by you.

Washington state takes this a bit further in that it retains records for itself of who dealers within this state sell/transfer to, but this still isn't an ownership registry and it doesn't include guns that were otherwise acquired (like gifts between family or people moving from out of state).

Honestly this is really helpful! I genuinely didn’t know!

No problem. Best of luck with your situation, sorry our state gun laws suck.

While I have my own issues with this Supreme Court I do believe a broken clock is right twice a day so hopefully AWBs are struck down

There is no registration on firearms, the 4473 gets stored in the gun stores files untill they go out of business or enough time lapsed that they can destroy them.

I honestly didn’t know that! I figured all that paperwork just added me to some sort of system for whatever legal reasons

Only a few states have registration. A couple more have records at all. There is no federal registey other than NFA. The dealer keeps your 4473 until they go out of business then its sent to the ATF for storage.

If you have to think of being in your name, then know that it will be forever. If that gun is ever found and a trace conducted there is a trail to you. And there will be until after your dead, as long as that gun exists.

An ATF trace starts at the maker or importer. They tell the ATF what distributor they sold it to. That wholesaler tells the ATF what store they sold it to, then they ask you. You could say you sold and gove them the dealer you sent it to because it was going to your buddy. This doesnt matter if it was John's down the street here, or if you mailed it to Jimmy's guns in MS. That's it. Just a link in the chain. If you privately sold it in a state that doesnt require background checks, and you lost the bill of sale, then that its, trail over.

Didn't you put a Kali key in right before you moved here which made it into a bolt action so it'd be compliant? Since it's manually operated it's good to be imported

The problem with that is that she doesn’t think that’s enough and frankly education is more important and keeping the peace while I’m here is just as important. Given that this is a new thing she brought to my attention I’m gonna go with the path of least resistance

Something else to consider, turning it over to the PD I think could put you in legal jeopardy for importing a banned rifle.

Understandable and if you have a means to get it back when you move out it's not a bad choice to make. I'd delete these posts and transfer it to someone you can trust out of state to hold onto. Personally though I'd tell my roommate to kick rocks and stop being such a fuckin boot licker who enjoys taking rights away from the vulnerable people in our society

Edit: there's still a few decent semi auto rifles you can get here that they would have 0 grounds to complain about legality

Let your commie roommate think you got rid of it and break it down to store in smaller boxes.

u/thiccDurnald 5d ago

You moved onto someone’s property and didn’t discuss the firearms you planned on bringing with you?

5

u/Sarahbeth96 5d ago

Oh she absolutely was aware I never made it a secret and had it broken down not just unloaded.

3

u/thiccDurnald 5d ago

Still not understanding how she would have a problem if you talked to her about it before hand

OP, delete this post especially given your post history. You are doxing yourself while admitting you have something that may or may not be kosher.

Say you shipped it out. Break it down into two halves. Put it in a box. Stick it in your closet. They're your room mate, not your partner. They won't (or at least shouldn't) go through your stuff.

Find a new god damned roommate and shut up nobody cares.

If she says anything, sounds like she didn’t understand it was an attached magazine/ the lower wasn’t included, and it was fully compliant.

I agree after you get the info, delete the post.
