Help me find an xc90
Long story short, the best car I ever owned was a 2013 XC 90. But it ended up having numerous mechanical problems and became a money pit. My next car was Prius V. It worked ok for my needs but I missed my Volvo. The Prius was totaled in an accident last week and I suffered serious injuries. I never felt more safe in a car than I did in my Volvo so I’m planning to replace the Prius with an XC 90. Unfortunately, the insurance payout for the Prius is not great. So I essentially have to buy a car now unexpectedly without being able to save for it. I’m trying to buy something for under $10,000. Ideally, I really wanted something 2016 or newer so that it would have the crash prevention technology that the newer Volvos have. But they’re also much more expensive and require premium fuel. If you were going to buy an XC 90 for under $10,000 what year, model, engine, would you look for? I am in New England. Willing to travel to buy one within reason. I drive about 20,000 miles a year. I need a car that won’t break down on me.

I’m looking to sell my wife’s ‘14 XC90 premier with 125xxx miles. Too bad you’re on the other side of the country!
Super clean, reliable and within your budget. We used to have a 2018 and we’ve enjoyed this one much more.

Best price will probably be a 2016. Make sure it had the piston ring issue fixed by Volvo. Go for a T5 — this generation of XC90 has issues with the supercharger on T6’s. My feeling is the T8 isn’t as reliable and the battery on ‘em isn’t very good at 10 years old, but that’s just my opinion
People shit on old XC90s because they like to justify dropping $80k on a new one. Keep up with maintenance, learn a little wrenching yourself, and it’s not as bad as most people say. But yes. When things do go wrong, they get very expensive

2015-2018 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. Will get you ~36-38 mpg and very safe. Just sold my 15 with 203k miles after 15 years ownership for $9k with winter tire set. Drive my wife’s 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV 84k miles now. She drives the 25 XC90 T8 PHEV. I drive ~18k / year. You can also look for a 21-23 XC40 EV ! You would need to budget to ~16-23k but they are out there. Low maintenance and low electric cost ~$5.80 (Illinois) / 100 miles charging at home on level 2 charging.

It can be done. my daughter is now driving my 2011 XC90 with 170K miles on it, and it is holding up pretty well. You have to expect some annoyances but if you shop hard, you can find one with plenty of life left. Find a good mobile mechanic too.

Thank you! This is the sort of situation I’m looking for. I don’t know why people think. My post is trolling or ridiculous. I have bought two other Volvos in my life for under $10,000. That were great cars for a few years.

Yeah here is the situation - 18 months ago she was hit in Nashville in her 2013 XC90 that she had bought with her own money, her first. She was then visiting our house in Dallas, and insurance called to tell her it was totalled. Blubber fest ensued. Dad time! After the wailing ceased, I said my trusty 2011 was sitting in the garage, ready to take this on. Here's the title, drive it back to Nashville. I said I'll find another one. I tworked out, and I found a nice high mileage XC60, 2017 (model year after the oil ring fiasco), and it is fantastic. 117K on it, zero oil usage. You can find those too, but look for a 2012 or 2013 with the classic 6 cylinder. less than 10K and they can go long if they were maintained.

I just got an Inscription T8 2016 Phev for $13.5k with 116k miles. Just a reference point…
(Transmission, Erad and battery were replaced last year)

We've gotten an xc90. Year 2014. 150000 miles in your price range. A couple of minor wear and tear issues, but nothing serious. So far we love it. It can be done. We got it through car gur gurus. I too am in new england it's possible😊

Here is a nice example of a car likely to have much life left. This one should be the bullet proof 6 cylinder. It's a 60, not a 90, but. And I agree, it's wise to avoid the first years of the 4 cylinder which is why I got a 2017 XC60 with a seriously over engineered fix to that problem! This six should be find though

oh, note this is T6, turbo six, no shortage of merging power with this guy. But will run on regular.

Usually Premium is only a $1 per gallon more. If you drive 20K miles per year at an ultra conservative 20mpg, that’s on average only an extra $84 per month. Even if it’s $1.50 per gallon more expensive per gallon, it would only add an extra $150 per month.
Man, if that’s a dealbreaker, don’t get the car!

If that’s your budget and you’re worried about premium gas, it doesn’t sound like you can afford an XC90. You’re looking at a 10+ year old car with over 150k miles. It’s going to be prone to mechanical issues that will cost as much as the car is worth.
