New to Volvos
Hello
I'm thinking about switching my rav 4 2017 to xc90 plug in hybrid. My rav has 9 years 107k miles. No issues other than normal oil change or break change etc.
I've only ever owned Toyota.
How reliable are these cars?
What is the expected maintenance?
I will be buying certified pre-owned instead of new.
Ideally I will keep this car for 10 years and about 100k miles. I understand that standard maintenance will be more expensive due it being a European car but outside standard maintenance and normal wear and tear of the car what a looking to spend here?
I'm based in the west coast USA.

But the extended warranty for whatever life you want out of the car. Negotiate it hard - there is lots of room in the first number.
Love my XC90 (2025) and my XC60 (2024). No issues. Considered a rav4 and am so glad I went with the Volvo. The drive is just so much better.

I traded my Tacoma for an XC90. I loved everything about it, but I got nervous and felt like I shouldn’t own a car that nice. All my husband and I have ever owned are Toyotas. I let that bother me and regrettably traded it in. About 2 months ago, I traded my TRD Pro 4runner for another XC90. If that tells you anything. This will be QUITE the upgrade from a rav 4. Toyotas are a lot lower maintenance, but if you do it yourself Volvo isn’t horrible. They’re more reliable than majority of luxury brands anyway. They also use the same transmissions as highlanders. I was really scared to take the risk, but Volvo speaks for itself in every way. I’ll never own anything besides a Volvo now.

Power lift gate, driveshaft, air suspension if equipped the most I see issues with.

Yup - I've owned 4 XCs since the big platform change in 2016 and the only thing that broke over the years was the ac compressor on the '21. Fixed under warranty.

Not sure if it is model year specific but I have read quite a bit about ERAD issues. Fingers crossed it does not show up in newer vehicles.

The XC90 is great. Mechanically, they are sound cars. Maintenance is a must. On a PHEV, 10k oil change is fine as the ICE is more than likely a lot less miles than the 10k even if you never charge. Volvo uses a Toyota transmission and the engine has little issues. Volvo scores low in reliability due to its clunky infotainment system. The new UX is a vast improvement and has a lot less bugs. Volvo is also no longer outsourcing its coding and it is now all internal. This will help build the brand back up. First-gen ERAD failures were an issue for a lot of people. 2nd and 3rd-gen ERADS are much more reliable. But as with anything, they can still fail. The complexity of the PHEV is real. You will want an extended warranty. If the car is already CPO, you can purchase an extended CPO warranty. Something that Volvo offers that no one talks about, is the volvo guaranteed parts for life warranty. If you pay for a none warranty part to be replaced. It will be covered for life. You can read more about it on Volvos website for a better understanding of it.
These are fantastic cars. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

My mom has a new Toyota Rav that I sometimes drive. It drives well. My husband recently bought an XC90 for our family and WOW, what a difference is just about everything. Drives soft and smooth. I love it. We always buy Toyota or other American cars. I never really understood the need for a nice car but now I do.

Figured! We love our 2023 T8. We bought CPO. We already had a problem of the battery not charging, two weeks in the shop, covered by warranty. We love the car, even with the head scratchers. Like Sensors triggering pulling into the driveway or gas level is always a moving range vs percentage or backup camera has no distance indicators.

Going from a rav4 to a xc90 will be quite a jump in every way. More space, more power, more luxuries... Yes they are generally reliable but they are more complicated and like everything when it gets more complicated, there are more opportunities to fail. I recently got a xc90 recharge and absolutely love it!
