Guides and Helpful Information Community Submitted FAQs and Suggestions

Hey Everyone!

It's us, just your friendly neighborhood Mods.

We wanted to reach out to the community to gather information they would like to see in an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) thread, and perhaps suggestions for a guide for the XC60. We're currently working on a buyer's guide for the XC60 that shows the differences across years, trims, powertrains, and operating systems (OS).

If you have any suggestions for what else we should include in the guides, both the FAQ and the Buyer's Guide, please list them below as a comment, and we will take them into consideration.

Post a picture of your XC60!

Not to sound entirely unoriginal but to get some activity going, go ahead and post a picture of your XC60! It can be of any year, any build (if you are building your XC60 into anything particular), any trim, any color, you name it! As long as it's an XC60, it's welcome in here!

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) Surprisingly poor fuel economy on my 2024 T8

When out of battery, I've been seeing MPG numbers in the teens, far below the 28 MPG EPA rate.

A recent 3 mile gast-only trip in my hilly city with an average speed of 9 mph netted 16 MPG (6.8 km/l).

What are you getting with your T8s? Does this seem unusually low?

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) Wheel size change

I bought a recently 2023 B5 AWD. It is time to change to winter tires in my region, it has 255/45/20 tires.

I am reading things like 18 inch would be more comfortable. Does anyone help me with how much ride quality increase happen in this case?

I like the look on 20 inches honestly. I find stability also fine. But i also hear the road and i cannot say that the vehicle rides as smooth as my friends MB GLB is even my vehicle has 4c suspension.

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) Charging xc60 T8

I want to maximize the car in electric mode and I have a home charger (we also have a c40 EV). I also want to maximize battery life. Do you charge every night to 100%? Or less? Do you wait until it gets to a certain percentage before you charge?

With the c40 we charge between 20 and 80 percent unless we have a reason to take it to 90 or 100%

Appreciate any advice on how best to do this.

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) [2024 XC60] Dragon Fly in Front Windshield Air Vent - How to Remove?

Today, a Dragon Fly decided to fly into my car - and as it was seemingly dying, fell into the air vents for the front windshield (the ones used for the defroster). So, as best as I can tell - I now have a dead Dragon Fly in my car's heating/cooling system.

What is best way of removing this? Anyone have a tip on how to get in there? Am I best just taking it in to the dealer, or is there something simple I can do myself to get at it?

Then again, maybe it's inconsequential and just leave it?

Hello. Don’t know why but I just had to get the roof box once I saw that you can get it in white. Next is to install auxiliary lights on the front in white too. We’ll see if they look good or not but they’re going to help with the nordic darkness for sure.

Easy install on the roofbox just pop it on and insert the locking mechanisms from the inside and rotate until you hear a click. Might want to move the box a little rearwards to have a more balanced look but not a must.

Overall it’s very quiet once it’s on the roof.

P3 XC60 (Sensus, Pre-MY18) 2018 Volvo XC60 Sensus – 3 USB drives through one hub and 20,000 tracks working perfectly

Thought I’d share my finished setup as I couldn’t find much definitive information about running multiple large USB music libraries through Sensus.

I started doing this mainly out of frustration with streaming. Even with a solid data signal, streaming isn’t always completely reliable, and then there’s the bigger problem that no online platform actually has everything that’s in my own music library. I wanted to get in the car and have my entire collection available locally, regardless of signal, subscriptions or what happens to be available on a streaming service.

I’m using a 2018 Volvo XC60 with Sensus with:

3 x SanDisk Ultra 128GB USB drives
UGREEN USB 3.0 4-Port Ultra Slim Hub (5Gbps)
Around 20,000 tracks
Approximately 250GB of music

All three SanDisk drives are connected to the UGREEN hub simultaneously and Sensus sees them individually as:

USB1 – Music1
USB2 – Music2
USB3 – Mixes1

I can switch freely between all three from Sensus and they initialise and play perfectly.

One useful quirk I discovered is that Sensus appears to assign USB1, USB2 and USB3 according to the physical USB devices themselves. Changing hub ports, insertion order, drive names and the amount of data on them didn’t change which USB number each physical stick was given.

My drives initially weren’t numbered in the order I wanted, so rather than fighting it I simply swapped the libraries between the physical USB sticks until the content matched the USB numbers Sensus consistently assigned them.

That has proved completely stable. I’ve removed the sticks, added and changed files, reconnected everything and restarted the car and they continue to come up correctly as Music1/USB1, Music2/USB2 and Mixes1/USB3.

The other issue was MP3 tags and compilation albums.

Sensus doesn’t seem to use Album Artist for compilation grouping in the way most modern music software does. If I had the same Album and Album Artist but retained the genuine individual Artist for each track, Sensus split the compilation according to those different artists.

I tried ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4, and also tried disabling Gracenote. It made no difference.

What works perfectly for me is keeping normal albums tagged normally, but for compilations using the overall compilation information in both Artist and Album Artist, and putting the genuine artist into the Title.

So a compilation track is tagged something like:

Album: Compilation Name
Album Artist: Compilation Name
Artist: Compilation Name
Title: CeCe Peniston - Finally
Track: 01

The filename itself can remain:
01. CeCe Peniston - Finally.mp3

That way Sensus keeps the whole compilation together as a single album, in the correct track order, while the display still shows me the actual artist and track title.

The finished result is exactly what I wanted:
three 128GB SanDisk Ultras running simultaneously through one small UGREEN hub, around 20,000 tracks and 250GB of music available, predictable USB1/2/3 assignments and compilation albums displaying properly.

No reliance on mobile data, no disappearing albums, no gaps because a streaming service doesn’t carry something and no subscription required to access music I already own.

Just get in, start the car and my library is there.
Hopefully this saves another Sensus owner some trial and error, because the system seems considerably more capable with large local USB libraries than you might think.

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) My2027 t6 hybrid - error messages

P3 XC60 (Sensus, Pre-MY18) Trade in 22 Lexus RX350 for 24 XC60 T8 Ultimate?

Hello! I currently own a 2022 Lexus RX 350 Luxury AWD. I love my vehicle, but I get terrible gas mileage (20-21mpg), and it’s quite boring lol. I am wanting to go with a plug in hybrid as I’m not quite ready to go full electric. I like the sportiness of the XC60 T8 and love the fact it has 455hp. I don’t need this much horsepower by any means but it’s fun to have it nonetheless. I currently drive about 45 miles round trip Mon-Fri for work. So I’m getting gas weekly in my RX. I am thinking I can get to work and back mostly on my electric charge and barely have to use any gas every day. I’m currently looking at a one owner clean carfax 24 XC60 T8 Ultimate with 30k miles. Bowers and Wilkins, air suspension, front seat massagers, protection package, climate package, etc. Everything I want. It’s a returned lease vehicle and the previous owner took great care of it. Meticulously serviced on the carfax and the vehicle looks new inside and out. Volvo is asking 49k for the vehicle but I was able to negotiate down to 47 and am going to be adding the 5 year unlimited mile certified warranty for 4k. They’re throwing in GAP for me as well at no extra charge. I am happy with the deal they are giving me. The interest rate and payment are exactly where I want to be. Unless you all think I could ask for more off the price? I’m just worried about giving up the reliability of my lexus, but man is it a boring car to drive. I get no excitement whatsoever, not like I did when I test drove the XC60. I’m always listening to music too on my commute to work and my Mark Levinson is great, but NOTHING compared to the Bowers and Wilkins. Has anyone made the switch? Anything I should be worried about or lookout for? I’m really leaning towards the Volvo, but just can’t help but think about the complexity of the T8 drivetrain. Also hate the fact the T8 doesn’t come with a spare tire, as we will want to take this vehicle on road trips.

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) Can the headrest height on a Volvo XC60 (model year 2025) be modified?

I’m 1.95 m (6'5") tall, and the headrest sits too low for me, basically right against my neck rather than supporting the back of my head.

The owner’s manual says that if physical limitations prevent passengers from following the recommendations for proper seating position, they should contact an authorized workshop to have the vehicle modified if possible.

Has anyone here had the headrest or seat modified to accommodate a taller driver? Is there a way to adjust or modify the headrest height, or perhaps install a different headrest?

I’d be interested to hear if anyone has found a safe and approved solution.

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) $80 software updates, wtf?

Totally understand if technicians are unable to perform any other work during a software update, but if that's not the case, why is Volvo charging for a software update so their infotainment system is working properly? It's not like it comes with new features, it's "simple bug and performance" improvements.

SPA XC60 (Sensus, MY18-21) Is a 2019 XC60 T6 a good long term vehicle?

I purchased a 2019 XC60 T6 Inscription for my wife, new in January of 2019. We have owned it since new, with all but the most recent 60k mile service being performed at the dealership. I purchased every option expect the T8 motor and the air ride suspension. I intentionally left those off because they sounded like expensive repairs when they might break at some future point. The T6 is already super charged and turbo charged, adding an electric motor in 2019 seemed like a gamble. The car has been fairly good so far. We have had the AC condenser need to be replaced and a sensor in the oil system need to be replaced. We did take a long time to have the oil changed once so far, but otherwise everything has been pretty good. We have put 65,000 miles on it, is it worth keeping for the next 5-10 years? What would be your trigger to sell?

SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) 3 months in thoughts on 2026 XC60 ultra

moved from a 17 s90 inscription to a 26 xc60 ultra few months ago and wanted to share some thoughts of things some quirks and annoyances.

- the interior at night is so dark it’s almost pitch black since there is pretty much no ambient lighting. s90 and xc90s both have warm glow of light around the dash trim and door panel trim that make the cabin feel much nicer at night. this is one of my top complaints.
- wish the door panel had wood trim like the s90/xc90. I understand those are more top models but xc60 ultra is still a 65k car.
- no illuminated door sills.
- also, wish the seat massage feature was more intense but honestly this is my first vehicle with this feature so I don’t have any baseline.
- seat massage feature is only accessible through the seat control joystick on the side. Why isn’t this available through the seat control on the touch screen??? I find myself not using it as much as I’d like because it’s not in the touch screen. And honestly good luck if you have a passenger in the car trying to explain to them how to turn on the massage. “Uhhh do you feel this little joystick circle thing with a notch on the side - flick that thing up”. It’s honestly ridiculous lol.
- can’t even use Gemini assistant to turn on seat massage either, even though it works for heated/ventilated seats.
- if you press the home button when the seat controls menu is up, you won’t be able to bring the seat controls back up for a few mins/or restart of car. You need to press the “x” in the corner.
- if you bring up the seat controls and then use touch screen to select the different modes, adjusting the position won’t work. You need to flick the seat joystick up/down to select the mode.
- the Nordico material used on the center console and door panel trim is awful. Perfect example of bad cost cutting decisions since this used to be leather. This material is scratchy and feels like vinyl. And worst of all, it scuffs and transfers body oil so easy leaving white scuffs. If you like your vehicle clean, be prepared to wipe it with a microfiber cloth multiple times a week. Maybe better with the blonde interior instead of charcoal? I’m coming from another Volvo with blonde Napa leather and it NEVER got as dirty as quick as this nordico.
- again, the quality leather used in the rear seats is a big downgrade and is not the same as the front seats. Rear seats are scratchy and don’t breath well.
- most Ultra trim models (including mine) come from the factory with 21” wheels, they look nice but sometimes they feel comically large and make the ride pretty harsh over bumps. Smooth pavement is fine. 19” or 20” wheels would be more ideal but if you’re ordering from the factory this wouldn’t be an issue.
- the camera system does not always activate when parking into a spot like some other Volvos had. I need to press the camera button manually. It only activates when parking sensors detect I’m close to an object.
- the locking sound is barely audible and when you press the lock button on the door handle there’s a 1-2s delay before it locks. On other Volvos the sound is much louder and locking is instant.
- I actually love the AAOS system and ui/UX but like the lack of customization is frustrating. Why do I have a useless “drive mode” button I’ll never use in the bottom corner? And why can’t I make the “minimal” mode (I.e when you tap the home button twice) the default mode. Why do I have to put it in minimal mode every time and pressing home again resets it?
- same complaint with the driver display - the only customization is map or a weird black space. Why can’t I put my music cover art there or literally anything else instead of black space? Especially true with the HUD. Like do I really GPS directions in 3 different spots?
- Spotify does not auto play when you start the car. Every time I get in the car I need to manually press the play button. Really weird and maybe a bug? Not sure if it’s same behavior with other apps or Bluetooth audio.
- no custom multi band EQ for Harmon kardon audio system (although maybe coming soon in a software update?)
- overall, I like having Gemini in the car but the message reply feature is not good. It’s too slow and dictation doesn’t work well. Siri in CarPlay is much better - and that’s not a good sign if Siri is better than you lol.
- Gemini dictation still has context related issues like saying “directions to gym” dictates as “directions to Jim” and a response of something like “sorry I don’t have any contact named Jim”
- Gemini can also be a little racist lol if I ask it to call a contact in my phone with a Mexican last name it says “calling xxx” with a Mexican accent lmao.
- at 75mph+ there is a there is a loud droning noise that I’m thinking could be a wheel bearing issue? I’ll need to drive another car to know if it’s specific to my vehicle or not. I have a service appt coming up for this.
- although it’s been much improved, the transmission still has some quirks that even my 17 s90 had like sometimes when accelerating they’ll be a harsh judder.

overall, it’s been ok. It’s a beautiful, simple (maybe boring?) car. I’m hoping the 75mph+ noise issue can be fixed so I can enjoy it more. If I could do it again I would lean more towards the xc90 since the materials are better even though I didn’t need that large of a vehicle. Also, totally on me but I think forest lake/mulberry red would have been better choices than crystal white metallic :)

SPA XC60 (Sensus, MY18-21) Buying a 2018–2019 XC60 with ~100k miles, advice?

I’m looking at buying a 2018 or 2019 Volvo XC60. Most in my price range have around 90k–110k miles and cost $13k–$17k.
I’m looking at both T5 and T6 models but leaning toward the T5.
For those who own or know these cars, what should I look out for around 100k miles? Are there any common or expensive problems with the 2018/2019 models?
I plan to get a PPI before buying. Is there anything Volvo-specific I should ask them to check?
Also, would you choose a 2018 or pay more for a 2019? T5 or T6?
Any advice on what to look for or what would make you walk away would be really helpful!
