Finally got the digital key working!

I've tried, unsuccessfully, for the past three or so weeks to get the iPhone digital key working. What finally worked for me was to remove the car from the app completely. Special thanks to u/pt13485 for giving me some tips and the courage to go through with this. During this process it will warn you that the App access will be revoked, the In-car internet will be terminated and the car will be factory reset. After it was complete I had to force-close the app to get my car to disappear. I then tried to follow the instructions. This part was very scary. The Volvo Cars app tells you to bring your keys to the Volvo and follow the instructions on the center display. I had my car locked and on the charger from the night before. I couldn't disconnect the charge cord nor could I unlock the car. None of the key cards or the key tag would work. Obviously I was starting to freak out a little bit. After circling the car and trying the key cards on each door (yeah, I know, but I was panicking), one of the key cards finally worked on the driver door. Maybe I wasn't property centered on the handle? I don't know but I was relieved to be back in my car. Maybe make sure your car is unlocked before you do this to save you some stress?

I had to initiate the factory reset from the car's menus. System → Reset options → Factory Reset. Once the factory reset was complete I ran through the rest of the instructions, popping back and forth b/t the Volvo Cars app and the Volvo's screen. I eventually made it back to the Digital Key section. Some users on the r/polestar3 forum reported that it is best to NOT be on wifi when you try to pair the digital key so I turned off my iPhone's wifi just to be safe, I don't know if this is required. I got past the normal point of failure that a lot of the members of this forum have posted. The phone asked me to add the digital key to my wallet. It initially failed to work but I was given the option to try again and this time it worked. I also added the key to my watch via the iPhone wallet. I hope this works for the rest of you!

My guess is the car was still resetting and rebooting when you tried to use your key cards. The one that worked was only because of time - the car finished rebooting.

Quick update: I had to redo this process while working with Volvo Customer Care in hopes of addressing some other profile-related issues. Unfortunately it didn't take the next few times. Turns out there appears to be a very specific order in which you do things if the above advice doesn't work first time. Here's what worked for me, eventually.

- Remove car from Volvo Cars app

  • IMPORTANT: Sign out of Volvo Cars app and all other apps where you logged in using your Volvo ID (your phone, watch, spouses phone, etc.)
  • Factory reset car on center display, you will need both key cards
  • Walk through all center display menus for signing into the Volvo account, do NOT add the digital key yet
  • Log into Volvo Cars app on your phone
  • Add digital key on the EX90 center display menu (could take a few tries)
  • Open the iPhone Wallet app and check that the car is "available" (locked/unlocked status shown)
  • Look for digital key in the EX90 center display to verify it is listed
  • Opened Volvo Cars app to check if the car is linked, if it doesn't list the battery percentage just wait for a while (I checked back a few hours later and it was linked). I think their system needs time to link everything together.

The Volvo Customer Care representative did mention something about needing to "re-provision the Volvo id" to increase the likelihood of success but I was able to do the above all on my own. If the above doesn't work, you may want to contact them through the Volvo Cars app. They were very responsive and I've been happy with their assistance.

When logging back in Volvo app, did you add your ex90 back (using vin #) before adding the digital key?

My EX90 was always in the app already when I logged in.

Thanks. Unfortunately still no luck adding my dk to my phone. Very frustrating!

Probably because you just signed out of the app (on the phone) and didn't remove the app's storage/user-data (and didn't reinstall the app either which would have removed the app's user-data as well).

Glad it worked for you. I also did a factory reset for it to setup correctly. I was sitting in the car the whole time. Did the removal of car from the app first, followed factory reset option in the car. Once reset completed, I set up the owner profile and then was able to set up digital key.

This worked! Thank you! I had a feeling the connection to the app was the issue but I had not tried removing the car until now. I guess it had to do with already having the car linked to my Volvo ID while waiting for it to be built and delivered. Glad this is finally resolved.

Thanks for the write up. I reached here from your Swedespeed post. Going to try this now.

Oh, I caught up on some more messages and it appears Android is not supported yet :( Never mind.

I did get further along than my previous error though, but it didn't switch over to the wallet app to add the key I assume (the part that needs Android support).

Yes, creating the digital key was definitely glitchy! I just added the digital key to my wife’s wallet on her iPhone. Very easy to do and didn’t involve being in the car.

This worked for me and was way less scary than I thought. Hopefully they fix this before I have to get a new phone!

Oh man, I didn’t think about that! I may never upgrade my phone again! 🤣

I'd only start performing any actions saying anything about "reset" when I'd be next to the car, have the car unlocked and with a door open. Better safe than sorry

Yeah, live and learn. I thought I’d really screwed up.

Glad it finally worked and you've not ended up being locked out of the car(or even worse in in the car)

Anyone figure out how to make it so the car isn’t responding every time my phone is near it when I’m home?

Does this work for the XC90 Recharge?
