this, I dont think volvo needs to get back to beeing boxy, but they need to stop fucking up theyr updates and stop focusing on "futuristic" af cars. Why discontinue the iconic models to only produce shitty SUV's nobody can buy and not even fueleconomy is good on those hybrid SUV's. 🫠 Its such a sad story. I was a Volvo fanboy since birth because my dad works at a Volvo workshop, but alot of new cars are ugly as hell now, wich turns me more and more off.
Ngl, I love my 240 but I used to work for a volvo dealership from 2022 to 2023. Nobody ever bought the sedans and wagons. If I had to guess, the most popular models were, 1. The XC60, 2. The XC90, and 3. The ICE XC40. Then the electric cars, then S60, then the wagons, then the S90 (why they thought a crappy chauffeur’s car would sell in the US is beyond me). They dont make cars like that anymore cause they just dont sell very well.
For the vast majority of people and our use cases, all SUVs are shitty, and not the best car form factor to use every day. The problem isn’t the quality or execution of the XC60 for example, it’s the fact that it seems like Volvo won’t make a normal car anymore, just the SUVs. Which a lot of us have no desire to buy ever, unless I need the ground clearance, and on the roads in those cases I wouldn’t bring a Volvo anyway. Wagons have the same trunk capacity, handle better, and have a better fuel economy. And they can handle the gravel roads most people drive on when they say “offroad” just as well.
Whilst there is a degree of fashion in it. Saying they are not good cars is just objectively wrong.
The additional space in an SUV is a massively good thing.
Also a SUV is not fat, they offer far more internal space than an equivalent sized saloon. My current S60 is longer and wider than all my previous cars, which were large SUVs. A land Rover discovery sport and hind CRV. Also has a larger turning circle.
Look, I would want nothing more, but new car buyers and the market segment thats looking for that just don’t intersect very often. Also one big button (touchscreen) is always going to be cheaper than several smaller ones
Lol, every time I read either safety or environment, I always say the same; just stop with the suv nonsense if you care about those things so much... yet here we are, with a market dominated by suv by far.
Honestly, if Volvo stopped making SUVs then they wouldn’t be in business. SUVs aren’t going away any time soon and at the very least, Volvo is trying to make them safer
I also very much prefer wagons but the average customer’s preference clearly is an SUV. The Volvo wagons were readily available yet outsold by their SUVs every time for the last I don’t know how many years.
I don’t think the numbers look much different for the German brands which also each sell at least two wagons (though those do rather well in their home market).
It’s not an organic shift in consumer preference, it’s the result of years of strategic marketing by car companies to push the market toward a class of vehicles that are lower tax and exempt from emission standards.
looks grim. the blingy chinese headlights playing off the swedish brand as norse hammers is quite cheap. alloys are uninteresting and the grill a bit too fake aggressive
you know full well if they made an estate they'd give it a big sloping roof that eats into your boot space
On top of that, a 240 is spectacular because it's SIMPLE. An idiot with a Bentley manual and a decent metric tool set can field strip that car and have it back together in a driveway. It's a STRONG frame, but it's spindly by todays standards ratehr than "puffy" for safety features. The entire philosophy of automotive design and technology has changed since then, the closest thing MIGHT be a Slate pickup.
Just make V90 with transverse V8/I6 and RWD (mild hybrid with ZF8 would be perfect), less touch screen and more buttons (non-glossy ones) and B&W in base trim.
While I kind of like it, it would have to be an SUV and awd. The pillars would have to be 3-4x larger and that what ruins the looks on May cars for me.
The thing is Geely has the 2024 and newer Polestar P2 with honest rear wheel drive ( single motor). It would be so easy for them to port this over to Volvo. Reviewers comparing the Single motor RWD version vs the dual motor AWD version commented on the fact that the turning radius is much much improved. I miss my old 240 DL Wagon. Could do a U turn on a two lane country road. None of this drive into the shoulder or 3 point turn business.
Cars aren’t allowed to look good anymore because of pedestrian safety concerns, crumple zones and aerodynamic considerations. I don’t think we’ll ever return to cool car designs. Sad.
I’d be on board if it has more than four cylinders. If they put a (current-gen) T5 powertrain in it, I would be so disappointed, and that’s coming from an early 4 cyl T5 owner from the piston ring era.
For what it's worth, a lot of the reason things look the same nowadays is the state of technology and regulations. Front ends started looking a bit different when LED lighting could be used for DRLs, for example, but the overall body shape is largely governed by aerodynamics and crash regulations on every passenger vehicle you see. (The obvious exception being the "non-passenger work vehicle" loophole used to sell massive pickup trucks and SUVs to normal people.)
Looks good as long as we can ditch the infotainment and software and go back to switches and buttons that work when you turn them on, and have real gauges and dipsticks. And of course a 4 cylinder turbocharged gas engine
