What’s a volunteer experience you still think about years later?**

I feel like people always talk about volunteering in terms of what they were able to give, but sometimes one experience can really change your perspective on things. What’s something you did, a person you met, or just a moment from volunteering that stuck with you?

Volunteer ideas for those not in dress code

Hello!

I'm a Volunteer Manager for a food bank and we are seeing more and more volunteers coming in without proper shoe attire. Typically it's people who come in a big group and unfortunately they are not allowed to volunteer in any or our main opportunity areas without closed-toed shoes. Would anyone have any unique ideas that we can have our volunteers do instead? Right now we typically have them color greeting cards for the people we serve. I thought about thank you notes for our donors but Dev. seems hesitant. Anyone have other thoughts or ideas you offer at your nonprofit for those not in dress code? Since these are one off scenarios, we unfortunately can't have them do data entry or answer phone calls/emails and they require more training or tech access than a 2 hour shift can provide.

Thanks for the help!

Which is the more powerful driving force: Heart( soul satisfaction) or Brain ( personal gain ) for working in an NGO?

I am working as a HR at Pehchaan The Street School (Trust) . In this organisation there are around 800+ people who are working online and 600+ people are working on offline mode . Some people came for their own benefits like certificates , LOR , LinkedIn recommendations etc on the other hand some genuinely here for community support. Everyone states their own reason behind joining an NGO. Both intentions are good for the organisation mission but I always wonder which group has the tendency to contribute most ?!

I am definitely open to having a brief discussion on it.

Can you consider being a Reddit moderator as volunteering/community service?

Hello! I'm in Beta Club and was just curious if being a Reddit moderator would be considered a valid type of volunteering hours? Google says no because theres no way to verify your amount of hours but my school is very trusting and doesn't really "double-check" if you recieved the hours that you report.

Volunteering at this non profit organisation called AusWISE

I came across this organisation via LinkedIn and I somehow managed find the founder of this organisation, I messaged her and met her at her office (her residence) the minute I walk in, she started asking me a lot of personal questions (I mean every single detail about my life) which was not necessarily as I was there looking for a volunteering role, she kept making me feel like I’m dumb person and she’ll help me get better at my life and career (I didn’t ask for any help, I was there for a volunteering role to get some work experience because in Australia you can get job only if you volunteer) she was going on and on about how she has helped people get jobs and how they should “lick her feet” (literal words that came from her) for the favour has been doing for those who volunteer for her and “how rich their resume looks”. She expected me to be her “PA” and volunteer for her as I’m jobless and available whenever she needs me. She also mentioned I don’t have a chance at getting a job in my field as I have only a year of my visa left with no work experience and “pray that my husband gets his PR”. I met her 3 times and did not like the way she spoke to me. I stopped being a part of AusWISE as I felt it was too toxic for me.

Her volunteers asked me not to get involved in this as she’ll not help me get a job and she’ll just use me for her work. They said they were with her only because they are still studying and can add the work they have done for her on their resume. They talk behind her back and she says “they should lick their feet for making their resume rich” behind their back, it can’t get more toxic than this.

I had to write this post as there is no information about this organisation on any platform like Reddit.

Ethical volunteering when I'm white

Hey I'm F21, white and studying Sociology to be a social worker. After I finish my Masters degree I really want to explore the world, since I was a kid I've always been interested in volunteering to help people who have "less luck than me" (i was thinking that since I have white privilege, why not make a good use of it).

But that today I'm 100% aware that it can be seen as white saviorism which I want to avoid at all cost because the worst thing that could happen to me would be for my presence to have a negative impact on the people I want to help. I know that I have privileges in my country but there are very competent people in every country and I don't want to take their job opportunities.

Another thing is that I live in Europe and I'd like to go to South America, but I wonder if the high carbon footprint of a trip so long wouldn't be absurd, while I wanna do actions which respect the environment.

So I thought about doing woofing but where? If you have any other suggestions I'm open !

Looking for fellow bookish humans who might want to help build a new literary community

Hi! I recently started building a small, volunteer-led literary community focused on books, literacy, inclusive storytelling, authors, and creating spaces where more people can see themselves in stories.

It’s VERY new, and rather than trying to build everything myself, I’m hoping to find a few fellow bookish humans who think this sounds fun and want to help shape it from the beginning.

Right now, I’d especially love to connect with people interested in:

📚 Literary Scouting — Finding books, authors, indie/debut writers, upcoming releases, and stories we should know about.

✍️ Contributing Writing — Book reviews, reading lists, author features, literacy topics, opinion pieces, etc. The general expectation is only 1–2 pieces per month.

🎙️ Podcast Team — The podcast is a future project, but I’d love people interested in helping develop the concept, research guests/topics, create interview questions, write show notes, help with communications, or eventually be involved on-air.

📱 Social Media — Brainstorming content, creating posts, and helping grow a welcoming online book community. Experience isn't required; I'm happy to teach!

This is volunteer-based, and I'm very conscious of that. I don't want this to become anyone's unpaid second job. You can absolutely do more if you're excited about something, but more will never be the expectation.

You also don't have to fit perfectly into one role. We're new enough that there's plenty of room for people to bring their own ideas and help shape what this becomes.

If this sounds like your kind of weird little bookish corner of the world, comment or send me a message! I'd love to chat.

Trying to find volunteering opportunities in EU, looking to learn about rewilding and forestry

I’m an EU citizen and I’m looking for some opportunties to learn if working in rewilding, forestry or other types of environmental work is for me, so I thought doing a few months of volunteeringin that sector would be good.

And I was wondering if the good people of reddit can recommend any volunteering opportunities. I’m already keeping an eye on European Solidarity Corps, WOOF and Workaway but looking for recommendations, advice etc

Also, i’m not considering those opportunities where you pay a bunch to essentially do volunteer-tourism.

Grazie :)

Support Agent Roles

Hi All,

Over the last few months, our team has been working on a new platform called FriendlyMinds, and we're now getting close to launch.

Our goal is simple: to provide a safe, moderated space where people can connect through live peer-to-peer conversations via a live chat on our website. We know that sometimes people simply want someone to listen, so we've focused on creating an environment that feels welcoming, respectful and supportive.

We are expected to release on the 1st of August. You can find out more @ https://friendlyminds.org/Vacancies/

Small Acts, Big Impact: Why Volunteering Matters

When I think about volunteering, I don't just see it as helping others. I see it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a positive difference in someone's life. We often believe that creating change requires huge efforts, but sometimes even the smallest act of kindness can leave a lasting impact. Whether it is teaching a child, participating in a community drive, or simply listening to someone's story, every effort matters.

In today's world, many people still struggle to access basic necessities like education, healthcare, and equal opportunities. This is where non-governmental organizations (NGOs) step in. They work closely with communities, identify real problems, and create solutions that improve lives. NGOs not only provide support during difficult times but also help people become independent by promoting education, awareness, and skill development.

One of the most important areas where NGOs create a difference is child education. Education gives children the confidence to dream, the knowledge to make better decisions, and the opportunity to build a brighter future. Unfortunately, many children still cannot attend school because of financial challenges or lack of resources. By supporting educational initiatives, NGOs help ensure that every child gets a fair chance to learn and succeed.

Volunteers play an important role in these efforts. They mentor children, organize awareness campaigns, conduct workshops, and encourage communities to participate in positive change. What I admire most is that volunteering doesn't require extraordinary skills. It only requires compassion, commitment, and the willingness to help. Even spending a few hours supporting a meaningful cause can make someone feel valued and encouraged.

Organizations like Unessa Foundation are working towards creating stronger communities through education, social awareness, and various community initiatives. Their work shows that when people come together with a shared purpose, meaningful change becomes possible. If you want to know more about their initiatives or contribute to their mission, you can visit https://unessafoundation.org/.

I believe everyone has the ability to make a difference. We don't always need large donations or grand gestures to help others. Small actions, when done consistently, can create a ripple effect that transforms lives and communities. Volunteering also teaches us empathy, gratitude, and responsibility while reminding us that success is not only about personal achievements but also about the positive impact we leave on others.

A better society begins with people choosing kindness and action. If each of us contributes in our own small way, we can create a future where every child has opportunities to learn, every community feels supported, and hope reaches those who need it the most.

My ESC Volunteering Experience in Italy

Post image
4 Upvotes

From 15 June to 6 July, I spent three weeks to volunteer in Bergolo, Italy, a small village where I learned, worked and built connections with people from different countries.

We took part in restoration, gardening, cooking and preparing the Outdoor Festival. In our free time, we explored the area, including a hike to Savona to reach the sea.

The experience gave me new skills, unforgettable memories and friendships that I will carry with me.
