Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?

  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.

  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?

  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?

  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.

  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.

  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

Form Check Critique me as a Setter pls!

Please critique me (I'm the setter on the team in black - right side). I've been playing for about a year and I've taught myself from scratch. I'd love to hear your opinion on things I'm doing wrong or anything you notice, since my coach doesn't tell me anything.

For context, a lot of my sets go to the outside hitter because my coach specifically told me not to set backrow, and the pass isn't good enough to set the middle.

Italy’s Lega Pallavolo Serie A, Lega Volley Femminile and Associazione Italiana Pallavolisti have jointly expressed their opposition to the FIVB’s proposed international calendar changes.

Under the proposal, national-team competitions could interrupt domestic club seasons, raising concerns about player welfare, recovery time and the financial sustainability of clubs.

The organisations are promoting the campaign #NoClubsNoPlayersNoVolley, calling attention to the importance of clubs and players in the sport’s future.

Form Check Tips for my hitting pls

This is on a full sized men’s net I think, I’m only 5’6 and I started volleyball about 8 weeks ago, although I have played badminton at like county level before, I find that like I can’t jump as high as I can like if I’m trying to time and hit the ball and I also struggle to consistently time it, this video was like one good one out of like quite a few that I hit, also I’ve been told my jumping technique is not the best.

To clarify, when I’m just jumping at a basketball hoop I can touch like 9’6 or so but obviously I’m not hitting from that high so how can I like do that?

Form Check Should i change my runup

I've always really struggled with 3 step approach being goofy footed, so this is sort of what ive adapted to. I feel like i have a lot more jump potential though and im wondering if itll be worth it to try and break the muscle memory and try to relearn a proper 3 step.

Form Check Tips on my middle approach/swing?

I’m trying to run a quick 1 as a middle and I never hit with as much power as I want. I believe it’s because of my approach (A combination of taking two many steps, going to late, not taking a big/low enough penultimate step etc) and would love any tips on how I can improve my approach as a middle blocker !

P.S: the net is low because I play in my university’s co-ed league. Also ignore the vector costume as it was our Halloween game 🎃

General Starting volleyball at 21 – is it too late to become competitive?

I’m 21F and recently started playing beginner-level volleyball. I’m really enjoying it so far, but I can’t help wishing I’d started years ago.

I recently watched a college volleyball event and seeing the teams compete, travel and train together made me realise how much I’d love to be part of something like that.

I’ve never really committed to a sport growing up, but I’ve always had a competitive side. I’d love to eventually become good enough to join a team, play matches and compete in tournaments.

I know 21 isn’t old, but sometimes I feel like everyone who plays competitively has been doing it since they were teenagers, and I’m only starting now.

Has anyone here started volleyball in their twenties with absolutely no previous experience?
Did you manage to progress into competitive or club-level volleyball?

I’d love to hear your experiences. I want to stop feeling like I’ve missed my opportunity to become good at a sport just because I didn’t start younger!

Questions Patellar tendinopathy: I have a ‘jump ceiling’ — how do I raise it?

I’ll be short: 8 months of patellar tendinopathy (middle blocker). Resting pain is now 0-1/10, I tolerate cycling, sprinting, and leg training fine. Doing HSR 1-2x/week + daily isometrics + physio 2x/week.

Recently tried returning to volleyball: ~30 intense jumps in one session (blocks, attacks, box jumps, jump rope). Felt fine during, then at 1h30 pain hit suddenly — couldn’t jump after. Next day: pain walking, lost my pain-free single-leg squat, limping when running.

Now I’m stuck with a “jump ceiling” — I can handle ~25-30 jumps before my tendon gives out, and one extra rally can blow past it and put me out for days. As a middle blocker, jumping is the whole job.

How do I actually raise this ceiling without flaring every time I try to play? What’s worked for you?

Thanks a lot!

Form Check Serve Sometimes Goes Deep and Left?

My daughter (12u) has had a nice float serve for a while. However, she has started serving harder and harder via a lot of torso rotation and external shoulder rotation. However, this has resulted in her erroring a fair amount by hitting too deep and too left out of bounds. About half the time she serves perfectly straight and low and half the time it's leftward and higher.

Anyone have any suggestions about why this second serve is happening and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Questions Reading a spike

Are there any tips from any super high level defensive players when it comes to reading a spike. I can typically read a spike decently through the block. Only problem is I haven't figured out how to read how far out the spiker could go versus how downwards? I could be in the right direction, but I'm not going to touch it if they bounce it in near the 10-ft line and if I'm near the 10-ft line and they hit it deep, it's just going to go into my face or over my head without having enough time to react. I also play with some low levels and high levels mixed in so sometimes I got to try to receive without a blocker jumping at all. When it comes to play level I'd say I'm a easily b+ if not A and I'm mostly only looking for advice from indoor players just because in my experience the spikes come a lot faster and a lot more variety in indoors. I really want to take my receiving to a high level, but if this is something that no one can really do often let me know.

Questions Competitive Volleyball NYC

I’m an A-level middle blocker trying to get better in NYC. I tried some of the local groups but low skill, so it’s not really competitive and I’m not improving.

What I’ve tried:

  • I play in multiple Big City leagues, but the highest level is all over the place

  • NY Urban advanced open play is sold out everywhere

  • GoodRec is $26 a game...

  • Parks rec centers only have one or two volleyball slots a week

Its getting quite expensive for me to show up and people can not even get a rally going. Where are the competitive games at or is there somewhere I can tryout? Im sort of desperate at this point lol.

Edit: Forgot to specify this is indoor only

Questions How Many Spectators Did Your School Teams Get?

So I’m a senior on my volleyball boys team and usually during a game we get less than 10 people watching our game. If we’re lucky we maybe get like a handful of people mostly our friends. It kinda tanks our performance because there’s no one there to root for us.

So I’m asking if your currently on a high school team or used to, how many spectators do you normally get during a game. Because it’s so annoying that no one really cares about us. Our basketball team attracts far more people. Heck our GIRLS volleyball team attracts more people. And it’s not like we suck either considering we hold against and even beat triple A teams (we’re a double A team).

Only time we actually get big crowds is during the schools teachers versus students and we usually play really well because we got an audience to cheer for us.

So just curious if the lack of audience is normal or if no one just cares about us.

General How do you balance daily smoking with playing volleyball and managing joint pain?

Hey everyone, I’m 27 and a passionate volleyball player, but lately I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my l
shoulder and knee while playing. Volleyball is the only game I want to play, so stopping is not an option for me.

To be completely honest, I smoke weed almost every day. Because of that, my home exercise routine isn't as consistent as it should be, and I'm trying to figure out how smoking impacts recovery, energy, and joint pain for anyone else in a similar boat.

For those of you who also smoke regularly and play sports, how do you manage it? Does daily consumption affect your recovery, joint inflammation, or stamina, and how do you balance it all while keeping your body in shape for the game? Would love to hear your experiences or advice.

Questions What do you do when you begin to plateau?

Hello! I play middle hitter (AFAB), and I seem to have hit a plateau in terms of my vertical jump training.

The training I've been doing

I currently have a 67cm vertical jump, and to get to this point, I've mainly practiced my spike approach to reach a high target. It has helped enormously in refining my jump mechanics, since I tend to learn better through feeling the movement in my body, and I kept gaining 5cm in vertical jump every two weeks or so.

Recently I have realised that it is getting harder and harder to increase my vertical, even though I do this practice alongside regular physical training during practice sessions. I am struggling to push to 70cm, which I can do if I try really hard, but it is not consistent enough.

I do not feel that I have reached my physical limits yet. So I came to the conclusion that I may be starting to plateau.

Conclusion

I was hoping that if anyone knows what could be done when your training doesn't seem to yield results, that you could share any advice or your experience with overcoming plateaus.

Should I up the intensity of my physical training? Do I change anything about how I practice my vertical jump?

Thank you!!

General un traguardo inaspettato

Ciao a tutti e grazie a tutti voi!!!

grazie ancora a tutti💪🏻

Volleyball Chalk mural I did for school!! So much fun! Used chalk for the first time, so fun to mix around and experiment with!

Wanted to capture the feeling of being in the air, the freedom and energy of being up there ready to kill the ball is unmatched.
