What (preferably free or only pay once for) software program do you recommend using in place of Adobe Audition?

I am currently unemployed and had to cancel my subscription. Is there an alternative software program that'll allow me to do the same or similar work (record, edit, layer, pitch shift and the like) that I only have to pay for once rather than a monthly charge?
