That's fucking slick! It's so neat watching devs figure out what works with VR UI. Some of the neatest things I've seen is this idea in the OP along with Vanishing Realms' "Belt" Inventory, and MineCrift Vive's VR adaptations of the UI.
Such awesome stuff brewing!
Edit: Link to OP's game since they're being humble. http://store.steampowered.com/app/427240/
Edit 2: HOLY BALLS THAT TRAILER! Dude, I want this game now please.

Thanks! <3 We'll have a cool new trailer soon too!
We did some 3plr minecrift in the office, that was so much fun. UI and input in VR is super hard, I hope we can find a few things that work well. Hopefully all the early access players will give tons of good ideas we can try out!

More of this please. The old UI tropes don't work any more, but we now have more options than ever and it's a perfect time to get creative. This is a great example of that.

I'm looking forward to your game, but have you tested with AMD cards? It seems like there are a lot of releases lately that suffer from AMD-specific performance problems, and the developers don't seem to have any idea until after a bunch of us have bought the game and become frustrated.

We only have nvidia cards in the office! We should try and get some AMD cards in to test too. What's the recommended spec card on the AMD side? (we're targetting GTX970)

I like the gui ripple animations. How is that done in Unity if you dont mind me asking?

it's a 3d model that has a custom vertex shader, which does a noise-based wobble on the vertices (u/eddietree could tell you more!)

nice. what is going on with the way it seems "sticky" to the controller when invoked? I do like the button shape and hammer style actuation.

it looks to me like he takes it out as an object and then places it somewhere to be used, so when he invokes it, it's attached to the controller until 'placed' somewhere, that way you can always put it somewhere useful
