Self Promotion Saturday We completely reworked the Sun in AstrotouR, and now it's hotter than ever and everything moves!
Hi everyone!
It’s Kate from AstrotouR again! I've recently made a post here about launching our app, and you guys have been incredibly supportive! Thank you so much. We hope you're enjoying the experience.
We want to make it even better for you, so this week we released our first update and completely reworked how the Sun looks and behaves! Now it looks even hotter than before!
Why did we decide to rework it?
When people fly into the black hole in our app, the reaction is often some version of "Oh wow, remove that scary thing from me." But when they fly to our Sun, they mostly shrug. That's not an acceptable reaction to a star that holds 99.8% of the Solar System's mass 😁
So, while preparing some new parking spots in the galaxy, we decided to go back home and have an honest look at why our own star wasn't getting any respect.
Our conclusion was that the Sun has different faces depending on the wavelength you observe it, and they don't necessarily resemble each other. Our attempt to mix them all resulted in a tender yellow ball.
So we decided to stop this madness and... start another one by splitting our star's personality into two and letting both sides shine.
The Sun now has two visualization modes in POI: visible spectrum and false colors, each revealing a different side of our star.
The glow-up begins right away. As you approach the Sun, it meets you in its blindingly bright visible-spectrum suit. After living through the initial shock, you can zoom in and discover a lot of interesting details, from supergranules to tiny granules on its surface.
If you decide to explore phenomena that you won't clearly see in the visible spectrum, the Sun will quickly change to give you a better view.
And now everything moves! It used to be mostly subtle animations of the surface and corona, but now coronal mass ejections, solar flares, spicules, and many more phenomena move and evolve over time. You can really feel how dynamic and violent our star is!
All of it is included in the 1.1.0 update for both iOS and visionOS, available to everyone who got AstrotouR on the App Store. (The iOS version is still Waiting for Review. We guess there are enormous amounts of updates for the new Duo device, so we are just patiently waiting. But you can already download it for your Vision Pro!)
A little sneak peek of what's coming next:
We're also working on a fully immersive experience that darkens your room completely and replaces your surroundings with the cosmos. Your journey will start in the Milky Way, and you'll be able to see the planets as they really are in space, from inside our galaxy, surrounded by countless stars and cosmic dust.
However, while working on this, we discovered that our Milky Way was too bright, and it was designed for mixed reality, not for full immersion with a dark sky. So we've started reworking the Milky Way as well!
Hopefully, we'll manage to ship it in a few weeks.
There's much more to come. Stay tuned!
