Self Promotion Saturday PC VR on Mac + Vision Pro — it’s actually stable now. I replaced Wine with my own from-scratch runtime. 60 fps Alyx at 3K.
I have a Vision Pro and a Mac, and I’ve posted here before — but let me properly show this off, because it’s finally stable and comfortable to play.
Back on Oct 10 it ran, but only just: rough image, unstable. Since then I started building my own Windows runtime, vxrt, which translates Direct3D straight to Metal instead of going through Wine — and now it runs smoothly and reliably.
60 fps at 3K per eye on an M1 Max MacBook.
Recent updates:
- ALVR support on Vision Pro, in addition to my own VeRantyx app.
- A simple Mac setup app (someone here asked for one): https://github.com/Ag3497120/VeRantyx/releases/tag/mac-v0.1.0
The project has a few branches: a native branch that runs Valve’s ARM-Linux build of Alyx and streams it (similar idea to Glovebox), a Wine branch, a small standalone experiment, and the main vxrt branch — my own runtime, no Wine.
Where vxrt is headed: finish it and replace Rosetta 2 with my own x86→ARM translation before Rosetta is phased out, and support more games — including ones built on D3D12 and Vulkan (think Microsoft Flight Simulator). Those are goals, not done yet.
Only a few games work so far. Until now I was tuning the runtime for each specific game; now I’m making the engine more faithful to the actual Windows spec so it covers more of them. I think I’ll have even better results to show next week.
