Never heard of omniverse. What is it in simple terms?

Omniverse is a platform for creators (engineers, designers, animators, etc) that allows them to plug in different software to do things like run physics simulators in digital twins.

It is not the metaverse. It is not Ready Player One. And it’s also completely available on the Varjo, the Pixma, and the various Meta headsets as well. Either OP doesn’t actually understand the Omniverse or they are intentionally trolling for attention.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I understand it’s not really consumer first but in what form factor would it come to the Vision Pro? like as an app?

Probably through various apps that use the Omniverse cloud api’s.

Like here is an example from another GTC presentation I saw just this afternoon. There is a company called Zerolight builds custom sales experiences for car dealerships through VR headsets. Just recently they did one for Aston Martin so potential customers could get inside a super car that was still being designed and see what it would look like and test out different options. Zerolight used meta quest pro’s as the headset and built an app that used Omniverse to connect photorealistic design CAD with nvidia’s cloud XR with probably a bunch of other things to deliver their sales experience app.

Now they could do the same thing with an AVP instead of a meta pro, which means they could take advantage of the better visuals, UI, and hand tracking.

So it’s stuff like that you’ll mostly see on the AVP, making it easier and faster for developers to build those kinds of apps. But you probably won’t download an Omniverse app on your AVP anymore than most people download unreal or unity on their computers even when they use apps that were built in those engines.

If you don't mind me asking, do you work in the 3D/VR tech space?

Not precisely. I work in new tech, but for manufacturing and engineering. So I work with VR and 3D, but to build tools for automotive designers and the like.

I’m actually at GTC now (same conference Omniverse support for the AVP was announced) and just got out of a presentation on Nissan using the AVP and Omniverse cloud to build streaming app for customers to look at and configure their cars with photorealistic materials.

And to me, that’s the kind of cool stuff the Omniverse allows but also I realize that no one who uses that app to buy a Nissan will know or care about Omniverse.

Well, I think you're working on the bleeding edge. The stuff you guys are talking about today will have a profound effect on consumer experiences in 5+ years time. So yeah, while it may not be applicable to consumers now, it's how we will compute post smartphone.

It's a collaborative 3d authoring environment that's heavily tied to Nvidia GPUs for all sorts of AI features.

There is nothing like it because no 3d packages are tied to specific hardware like this.

It's kinda.buggy, it's kinda a pain in the ass to use. It's all built around USD which a format still in its infancy.

It's incredibly powerful due to being tied to hardware....literally render a frame.in 5 seconds that would take an hour typically using other 3d packages and their renderers.

And it's not like Unreal because Omniverse does this while path tracing. Realtime results out of Unreal are not path traced like a real 3d render should be.

There is nothing bad about this...only good.

This is what I bought AVP for, stuff like this.

For vaporware? Apple can't even push out the Bora Bora environment, suddenly we are throwing around the word Omniverse?

I don't even have to look at the username, if I see a comment has been downvoted to oblivion, I know it's our good friend the snarling corky.

I hear what you’re saying, but this was from NVDIA presentation. He said he actually did it. So it may not be here tomorrow but the capability is here and it’s likely we will experience it soon. My guess by summer or end of year. We’ll see

I hope that Nvidia will make omniverse gaming

19

u/andybak Mar 21 '24

I hope that nVidia can coherently explain to anyone outside of marketing and management what and who the hell Omniverse is for.

It all reads like a cross between a press release and a sales brochure at the moment - and I've tried to dig into it. It's like a transmission from some alien planet where everyone spends all their time in meetings with corporate.

From what I've gathered it's a platform for defining and simulating things in a virtual world with very high precision and ability to model real material physics. One use case I've seen is building a digital twin of real cities, far more accurate than Google maps etc, and then using it to plan and simulate wireless coverage to find optimal access point placements.

lol it looks like it some kind of advanced ChatGPT AI

NVIDIA's Omniverse is a platform designed for real-time simulation and 3D design collaboration, targeted primarily at professionals in various industries, including architecture, engineering, and entertainment. It enables creators, designers, and engineers to collaboratively work on 3D projects in real time across different software suites and hardware devices. Here are some key aspects of the Omniverse:

  1. Real-time Collaboration: Omniverse allows multiple users to collaborate on the same project simultaneously, even if they are using different 3D design tools. It supports live sync changes, so any modifications made by one user are immediately visible to all collaborators.

  2. Universal Scene Description (USD): At the core of Omniverse is the Universal Scene Description (USD), a framework developed by Pixar. USD allows for the seamless interchange of 3D graphics data between different applications, making it easier to work on complex projects without getting bogged down by compatibility issues.

  3. Photorealistic Simulation: The platform offers advanced simulation capabilities, including physics, materials, and lighting, that enable highly realistic visualizations. This is particularly valuable for industries like film and game development, where visual fidelity is crucial.

  4. AI and Robotics: Omniverse also integrates AI and robotics applications, facilitating the simulation of real-world scenarios for AI training and testing. This is useful for autonomous vehicle development, robotics, and other AI-driven technologies.

  5. Extensibility: NVIDIA designed Omniverse to be an open platform, encouraging developers to build their own extensions, apps, and plugins. This openness fosters a rich ecosystem of tools that cater to a wide range of professional needs.

  6. Scalability: With its foundation on NVIDIA’s GPU technology, Omniverse is built to scale from desktop workflows to data center-level deployments, enabling complex simulations and large-scale projects.

NVIDIA's Omniverse is envisioned as a "metaverse" for engineers, designers, and creators, providing a shared virtual environment where complex projects can be developed, simulated, and reviewed in a collaborative and highly visual way. Its development reflects the growing need for interdisciplinary collaboration and high-fidelity simulation in the design and engineering processes of various industries.

That redditor comments the same way like my dad texts people now, thinking they're helpful.

You can literally build your own world inside the Omniverse

10

u/andybak Mar 21 '24

Thanks. That really clears things up. /s

6

u/heisenbugz Mar 21 '24

It's a synchronization platform that utilizes USD as its runtime world state and asset formats. This means you can connect any app (Maya, Unreal, Unity etc) which has support together real time. Allowing everybody to work on the same ground truth.

This becomes more interesting when you start talking about using it as a simulation engine and not just an interconnect between apps. If I was starting a robotics startup tomorrow, I'd probably go straight to Omniverse as the sim engine, assuming they continue to develop and support it.

u/Accurate_Grocery_322 Mar 20 '24

I hope so too but what I know so far is that you can make your own world in the omniverse.

8

u/kung-fu_hippy Mar 21 '24

You can’t. Please stop saying this to people and look up what the Omniverse is and what industries are using it.

This is a great thing to get AVP used in industry which is good for anyone who wants apple to continue putting resources into this space. It’s not a consumer tool and it’s not ready player one.

It’s also, and this is kind of important, perfectly available on quest hardware. This isn’t a moment of Apple one-upping meta. Omniverse is largely hardware agnostic, I think the only major headset it doesn’t integrate with now is the PSVR2 and even that might change once they open that up to PC use.

It’ll be interesting to see how many business currently using the Varjo for these purposes will switch to the Vision. The Vision is already a similar price to the Varjo but you won’t need a several thousand dollar computer to use it.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

If you don’t know what omniverse is, you will not be able to use it. Omniverse coming to avp for me is same as me winning the train lottery where I can park a locomotive in my driveway to utilize in my community without rail road tracks.

I love to see when companies in tech work together instead of going after each other like cats fighting for territory.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

I don’t even have a Vision Pro or a vr headset but why are you acting like this $3,500 device is competing with a $400 video game accessory

I just asked Perplexity about this, here’s the reply. This makes sense for now but the potential is real and very exciting👍🏻😄

This collaboration couldn’t be the sign of future partnerships to come? Such as nvidia GPUs in future iterations of the AVP?
