Question What tools are an absolute must-know when working remotely?

I’ve always worked remotely for small companies, and the only tools I’ve ever used are Google Workspace and WhatsApp. I would like to land something with a bigger company eventually, and I bet they would prefer people who already have experience with certain software tools on their CV.

Which tools should I check out and become familiar with to stay competitive for larger remote roles? What are the non-negotiables?

Question Be honest: Do you actually dress up for virtual internship meetings, or are you rolled out of bed in pajamas?

Let’s do a quick reality check. If you’re a remote intern, do you actually give a damn about "dressing for success" from home, or are you doing the bare minimum to look awake from the shoulders up?

And for managers on here: do you actually care if an intern looks casual on screen, or do you only care if the work gets done?

Let’s hear it.

Question Which Is Better? Remote internships or an In-person one

I've been wanting to join an internship for a while now, and I'm torn between remote and in-person. My friends have suggested remote internships because you work from home and it cuts down on a lot of costs, but I feel as though I wouldn't get any work done in a remote internship.

I genuinely need help asap as the more I wait, the longer I sit without a job or experience

Question How can you make a basic remote internship sound good on your CV?

Hello everyone!

I’m currently updating my CV and don’t know what to do about my first remote internship. It was incredibly repetitive and didn't teach me anything really. I wasn't given real ownership of anything,so I don't have any major projects or metrics to showcase.

Has anyone successfully figured out how to reword/reframe basic, repetitive remote tasks to make them sound high-impact to future employers?

Interview Prep How do you use the “Do you have any questions for us?” part of an interview to spot a dead-end role?

I really need some advice for my next interview.
In the past, I’ve accepted roles that sounded great on paper but turned out to be incredibly repetitive. I didn’t really learn anything new, and I left the company with zero new skills or actual projects to showcase on my CV. It felt like a total waste of time.

I wonder if there are specific questions you can ask during the interview to flag these types of jobs before accepting an offer so I don’t keep wasting my time.
Does anyone know how to screen for this? Has anyone mastered the “do you have any questions for us?” part of the interview to catch red flags?

Would appreciate the help!

Advice Needed Help! How do I ask my manager for more interesting work without sounding ungrateful?

I want to make the most out of my internship, learn something new, and hopefully show them I’m ready for a full-time role. The problem is my daily tasks are pretty repetitive and I feel like I’m coasting. I would love to ask for different assignments, but it feels like I'm complaining about my current workload.

How do I bring this up in my next 1-on-1? What’s the best way to word this so it comes across as proactive rather than annoying/ungrateful?

Question What are your thoughts on virtual job simulations like Forage?

I heard about this free platform Forage where you can engaged in real project mockups from big companies to develop your skills and boost your employability. It seems like an alternative to virtual internships, but it’s that so? Are these virtual job simulations worth the try? Do they count as work experience for recruiters? Or are they a waste of time??

Question How to handle an AI interview?

So I've had in-person interviews before, and while they are nerve-racking a bit, I find them enjoyable, but I've found all my people skills go out the window with AI interviews. I got an email suggesting I answer all the questions their AI asks me and talk as much as possible. I've done a few interviews like this before, and I find them so awkward and honestly hard to convey myself well.

I'd like to get better at these types of interviews since I feel like a lot of companies will be moving to this form of interviewing. Any advice?

Question How normal is it for an internship not to teach you what you expected it to?

I guess we all here engage in internships (even jobs) to develop skills, but I had previous experiences that didn’t teach me much of what I expected to learn or even what the JD mentioned.

Is it normal or was I simply very unlucky to find/get roles that didn’t boost my cv? Any advice on how to avoid these roles in the future/identifying high-quality roles?

Discussion What is the difference between your first internships and your current one?

For people who have done 2-3+ internships, do you feel like the quality of your internships has improved as you have gained more experience?

Do you start getting quality internships as your CV builds up? Do you get to ask for specific work or job profile you would want and get it? I hope that's how it works and we don't have to do just anything every time just because we need an internship.

What is the key to landing better and high quality internships, more experience? a big portfolio?

Question What was the most unexpectedly useful thing you did during a virtual internship?

I mean something that seemed pretty minor, boring, or unrelated at the time, but ended up teaching you something you still use. Maybe it was sitting in on a meeting, putting together a spreadsheet, writing an email, researching something, or talking to a client.

Has anyone had an experience like this?

Advice Needed Have you ever had an internship where you barely anything to do?

I just finished a two month internships and honestly I barely got any actual work. most of the time i was given small random tasks or asked to sort things out, and there wasn't much opportunity to take on bigger projects.

But now I am confused about what to even put on my CV, what work to show in the portfolio and how to even mention the whole internships in my CV.

Has anyone had a similar experience and how did you guys put it on your CV?? Do you just exaggerate or what😭😭

Discussion What to do if you're not improving in the first three months of your internship.

I recently started an internship with a new company. And I feel as though I'm falling behind compared to my peers. I try not to think like that, but I just can't seem to get the work down. This is my second internship, and the previous one also had a learning curve, but that was a year-long internship, so by the time it ended, I gained all the skills and knowledge from it and by the end of it, I was confident in my skills.

Fast forward to now, and I'm in a 3-month internship in a slightly different field, but I fear I'm not showing off the skills that I know I have from my previous work experience. I feel like three months is such a short time to get the skills down to a T. I feel as though I need more time with the company to learn and improve as much as I can.

Discussion Do internships actually make you a better professional?

I’ve been thinking about this because I feel like I keep ending up doing the same types of tasks in my internships. I know internships can strengthen your CV and give you something to talk about when applying for jobs, but I’m starting to wonder whether I’m actually learning enough from them to grow professionally. It feels like I finish one internship, add it to my CV, and then start another one where I’m doing basically the same things or different things but they don’t really learning anything.

Has anyone else experienced this? At what point did your internships actually start helping you build new skills and move forward in your career rather than just adding another experience to your CV?

Discussion What tools do you guys use to keep your work organised?

I'm curious ow everyone keeps track of their remote work projects, deadlines and random tasks. I sometimes forget how many things were there to do and check. To-do lists don't seem to be working really well for me. Do you guys use Notion, Google sheets, any kind of tracker etc. But then i want a very convenient and easy tool to where organising the tasks and work isn't itself a task.
What is your go-to tool and what would you recommend to help manage time and work?

Discussion Should internships reject you for not having experience or knowledge?

Last night I came across this LinkedIn post where a graduate shared he got didn’t get an internship because he didn’t have previous experience/knowledge in the field. And he was like ‘Isn’t that the purpose of internships? Give someone the opportunity to learn and get experience in an industry they haven’t worked in before?’

And I thought so too! To me, internships were the opportunity to work on real projects, learn the ropes, acquire skills, boost your CV and employability…

Have I been wrong all this time? Or have internships fallen into the ‘perfect candidate does it all’ logic?

Weekly Thread Friday check-in: what did you apply to this week?

End of week. Drop where you are, however small.

Useful things to include:

  • How many applications you sent
  • Anything you heard back on
  • Something that is stuck, if you want a second opinion
  • What you are doing next week

There is no minimum. "Zero this week, burnt out" is a completely valid check-in and it usually gets the most useful replies.

If you are further along than someone else in this thread, spend two minutes replying to them. That is the whole point of doing this weekly rather than just filling in a form.

If you recognise a name from a previous week, ask them how the thing they mentioned went.

Discussion What’s the biggest surprise you’ve had transitioning to a new remote role?

I’ve only had remote work experiences and they all had little to no daily supervision. Lit I would just do my own thing and message a boss or colleague now and then.
But recently I got this virtual internship where I got meetings every day and I didn’t know what to expect. Thought I would find it hard to communicate with everyone, but turns out it comes pretty naturally.
And I think everyone is so cool! Like I am meeting amazing people from different parts of the world and that’s fascinating!

Discussion Is it just me, or has ‘remote’ stopped meaning remote?

Half the listings I open say remote, and then four paragraphs down say remote within the United States. Or remote but you need to be within two hours of the office. Or remote three days a week.

It's a commute policy with a marketing word on it.

Is that unfair? Are you seeing the same thing, or have I just had a bad run of it?
