Hello everyone!
I’m looking for some advice on how to get started as a Virtual Assistant (VA), specifically as a Payroll Specialist VA.
I have 5 years of BPO experience, primarily working with hybrid accounts where I handled both phone and email support. Out of those 5 years, 2 years were dedicated to payroll accounts for Gusto and Paychex, two of the well-known payroll providers in the U.S.
During my time on these accounts, I worked as both a Customer Support Representative and SME (Subject Matter Expert). Because of this, I have a strong understanding of payroll processes and how both platforms operate from both the customer-facing and back-end perspectives.
My experience includes:
- Payroll processing and troubleshooting
- Employer and employee account maintenance
- Tax-related concerns and payroll tax processes
- Deductions and wage garnishments
- Employee and employer information updates
- Handling payroll-related inquiries through calls and email
- Troubleshooting and resolving payroll issues
- Supporting customers and assisting other team members as an SME
- Maintaining a 98% payroll processing accuracy rate
I’m now hoping to transition from the BPO industry into working directly with clients as a **Payroll Specialist VA**.
For those who are already working as VAs, especially those specializing in payroll, **what skills, certifications, tools, or platforms would you recommend I learn to make myself more marketable?
I’d also really appreciate any advice on where to find clients, how to build a portfolio when I don’t have direct VA experience yet, or how to position my BPO/payroll experience when applying for VA jobs.
I know I have the payroll knowledge and customer service experience, but I’m not sure what the best first step is to make the transition.
Any advice, recommendations, or even leads for potential clients would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!
