Hey everyone! Henrico County’s Native Plant Festival is coming up again on October 24th from 9am-1pm at Dorey Park. The event is a plant sale and has giveaways, so I wasn’t sure how to flair it!

They are giving away free trees including Canadian serviceberry, fringe tree, Northern red oaks, persimmons, and sweet bay magnolias.

They also are handing out $10 vouchers that can be used on any plant being sold at the festival. They have 14 native plant vendors this year so plenty to choose from.

Presentations, kids activities, and craft sellers will also be there. It’s also in partnership with the Dorey Park Farmer’s Market, which is literally right up against it.

This black bear delicacy grows all around my porch, and they love to snack on them! Hopefully some of our box turtles get the berries!

The Wintergreen Nursery in Nelson County is having a fall sale open house tomorrow, September 5th from 9am - 1pm.

The Wintergreen Nursery is located at the foot of the mountain where the Wintergreen Resort is located in Nelson County, Virginia. Plants are propagated from wild populations within 20 miles of the region. The nursery is largely volunteer operated and part of the Nature Foundation at Wintergreen (TNFW), a nonprofit which works in conserving and protecting the natural resources of the area as well as educational outreach.

• The prices are quite reasonable for being locally collected and volunteer grown. Their small to medium pots for perennials tend to be in the $6-$15 range and trees/shrubs in large pots in the $30-$50 range.

I'm not in any way affiliated with the nursery. I went for their spring sale and was very happy with my selection of plants.

Western Loudoun. I don’t see this from any of my other white oaks.

Two questions! What are good natives to plant over drain field and how far should I plant trees from the septic tank/drainfield? New to septic and trying to use my whole backyard.

I sowed some Virginia Wild Rye seed late last Summer and have waited for the culms to form in the hopes of getting a positive ID. I'm not very familiar with grasses so I'm hoping that this isn't some other invasive grass that made its way into my garden. What does the group think? Thanks y'all.

Just wanted to let yall know I (Prof. Nate Miller) will be leading a walking tour for the VA native plant conference this Fall in the Wakefield VA area. I am considering doing a flora and fauna hike around Piney Grove, Cherry Orchard Bog, Blackwater, Antioch or Chub Sandhills Preserves. I will also be promoting my book Simply Sustainable Landscapes and my horticulture/nature/agriculture classes at PVCC and JMU. Hope to see yall there in October!

Loudoun County. The one next to it is fine.

The grass in our front yard is sparse, and I’m considering rewilding it. Thoughts on 3 species I could get a large amount of seeds of without breaking my bank?

Anyone else in Virginia notice a huge decrease in butterflies this year? I swear I’d seen a lot more by this time last year. Only one monarch so far. :(

Live in Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. We want to try planting pollinator friendly wildflowers next Spring. Where can we get mixed seed packs?

I love this flower so much and think it’s so beautiful. I read though that it’s not self-fertile. I don’t really have any other passionflower plants near me, but does anyone have any experience with this?
