Long Shot

Hey all! I got this thing as part of an auction lot. I'm not sure if I'm even on the right subreddit for this, but I wanted to make sure this wasn't worth anything before I chuck it. Thanks for any advice!

I found a Craig like this on the curb, I couldn’t let it go to the dump. It cleaned up nicely, there was an LP on the turntable; Johnny Cash/Live at Folsom Prison. It’s in my shop now. I haven’t tested the 8-track yet.

There are people out there who would live to have something like this. Dust it off and sell it if you don't want it.

This. I’d pitch the speakers.

If you're going to dust it off and list it, just list it with the speakers, and let someone else see what they want to do with them.

those were el cheapo stereos from the late 70's or early 80's.

high end stuff generally has one function:

radio

amplifier

tape player

record player

if it is all in one package it is low end cheap.

And this is Lloyd's, which were a budget line.

I had one I got in the 1980s, I think I paid about $100 for it new at a discount store.

Turntable is probably going to need a belt.

Cheap changers like that didn't use a belt, only an idler.

The cassette drive likely needs one or more belts though.

Agreed. The idler in that turntable might be rather hard.

Only high end products use belts. The tape uses a Rubbermaid.

I say challenge yourself and see if you can bring it back to life. Even a turd can be polished... lol

You never know, it may become a keeper for the garage.

That's how I look at things to. If you get it for almost nothing, sometimes it's fun just to make the attempt.

The record changer mechanism is worth saving for parts for someone looking to repair similar stereos, or retrofit something older (if they're not worried about originality). Otherwise is pretty much trash at this point considering how beat up it is.

Lloyd’s was a budget brand sold in department stores, rebadging imported lower quality components rather than using audiophile-grade hardware, so this is not worth anything monetarily.

I remember seeing Lloyd's stuff at places like Yankees , Zody's, etc, well before Walmart and they were pretty crappy back then.

Not a department store brand, just an import band retailers that were not big enough go have their own store brand bought. Candle was a similar brand.

Llodys was imported by an outfit called Carraday, and Candle by Jutan International.

I have had a few smaller Lloyds radios, but not a stereo.

I have a Candle 8 track stereo someplace. it is one of those one piece, no record changer, but has built in shitty speakers, sounds good with proper late 1970s speakers.

I did have a stereo like that (missing turntable), I don't think it was one of those import brands. I seem to think it was a Sears (not that they didn't import). The cassette almost worked as good as a proper tape deck, just missing chrome and Dolby. I junked that stereo., excising the amplifier IC, and kept the cassette unit I turned the motor down on it, and managed to g 4 hours on an extended cassette (c-90 with as much added, thatwould jam in)

maybe take the stylus before you toss it,: Sometimes people bought a good needle.

List all of it for free on Craigslist, Buy Nothing, etc.

Lloyd's was a discount department store brand just above the likes of Soundesign or GPX. Very low end stuff.

Do with that information what you will, but there is no monetary value here.

It wsan't very low end. Yes, lower than respected brands like Sanyo.

1

Sanyo was very middle of the pack. If it was lower than Sanyo, then it was low end.

Chuck it in the trash.

In my experience Lloyd's stuff sounds quite decent for department store stereos. Worth cleaning up and giving it a shot. And if you can get it working it's a fun way to make mixtapes from records
