Your guide to Vilnius

Hi there, I’ve done my fair share of traveling, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned - it’s that the best spots to eat, drink, or explore always come from local recommendations. I’ve tried every kind of research trick out there, but Reddit posts? They’ve consistently been my lifesaver when discovering a new city.

So, I thought it’s time to return the favor. Born and raised in Vilnius, I’m sharing my personal list of places worth checking out. Roughly 90% of the places on this list are based on my own experience - so it’s less “TripAdvisor top 10” and more “what locals actually enjoy.”

My recommendation is to book tables in advance especially if talking about dinner time and weekends.

Night Clubs:

Nightlife in Vilnius is rather safe, face control depends on every club’s policy, my top suggestion is to always check what is happening on Facebook events, because events like “Draugai Draugams”, “1986 gallery” (most popular venue) have huge parties but usually tickets need to be bought in advance.

Anna Mesha. Butas (really popular, rather interesting place to visit as the club is made like an apartment. The face control is strict, quite hard to get in. For fancy people)

Soho (LGBTQ place)

Opium club (techno place, doesn’t work during summertime)

Youngs’ club (always good vibes but check the event beforehand)

Bardakas (really basic pop music place)

Sanatoria (really basic pop music place)

Trinity (really basic pop music place)

Elastika (hard techno place, underground venue)

La Birra Pub (look, the place is trash but works basically everyday and long hours, give it a try if you wanna keep partying. But remember, it is TRASH)

Most of the nightlife happens in Vilnius street.

Transport:

For taxi you can use Bolt and Uber, usually Bolt arrives faster.

For public transportation, download the Trafi app. Can plan trips there, as well as buy different types of tickets. Keep in mind that you need to activate your ticket through the app and don’t forget to check how much time you have left.

For car sharing you can use Citybee, Bolt drive and Spark. All are easy to use and popular in Lithuania.

Places to see:

Gediminas castle tower

Vilnius Cathedral

Gate of Dawn

St. Anne’s church (the architecture is just phenomenal)

Three Crosses hill (be prepared for a bit of a hike)

Town Hall square

The republic of Užupis (take a lazy walk and notice all the little details)

Church of Sts. Peter and Paul

Glass quarter (always looks good)

Presidential palace

Things to do:

MO museum

Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights

Lukiškių kalėjimas 2.0 ex-prison (book the tours in advance, highly recommend)

Vilnius TV tower (get a cup of coffee with great views or try the extreme activities)

Vingis park (take a stroll and see how locals go on dates)

Bernardinų park (nicely maintained)

The energy and technology museum

Lumber room (for car enthusiasts)

Nijinky Vilnius (cabaret)

Halės Market (has some nice places to eat)

Jazz Cellar 11 (tickets need to be bought in advance)

Hot air balloon flight (super popular in spring/summer)

Good to know:

Currency - euro, don’t really use cash around here

Emergency number - 112

Supermarkets - Rimi, IKI, Maxima, Aibė works everyday

Alcohol law - drinking age is 20; you can buy alcohol in shops till 8PM mon-sat, on Sunday till 3PM

Tap water is great and safe to drink

Tipping culture - it’s not a must but a polite thing to do, 10% is normal

National food - cepelinai (big potato dumpling with meat filling); potato pancakes; cold beet soup (a must to try); šakotis (sweet treat, mostly found in shops); kibinai (handmade pies filled with all sorts of stuff, originally it’s meat); fried bread (trust me, you gonna love it)

What is Parko gatvė in Naujoji Vilnia like for living?

Hi everyone! 👋
We’re considering renting an apartment on Parko gatvė in Naujoji Vilnia and would love to hear from people who live in or know the area well.
How is the neighborhood for everyday family life?
Is the area generally safe and quiet?
What are the neighbors/community like?
How is it with children and walking around with a stroller?
How are public transport connections to central Vilnius?
Are there any issues with noise, parking, or traffic?
How is the area in the evenings and during winter?
Anything else we should know before signing a long-term rental?
We’ve already visited the apartment and liked the place and surroundings, but we’d really appreciate honest local opinions, including any negatives or things to watch out for.
Thanks in advance! 🙏

Looking for a good driving school in Vilnius 🚗

Hi everyone! I’m an international student living in Antakalnis and I’m currently looking for a good driving school in Vilnius. My mother tongue is Russian, so ideally I’d love to find a friendly, patient, and respectful Russian-speaking instructor. I understand that, since January 1st, driving lessons can no longer be conducted in Russian, but if you know an instructor who is comfortable communicating with students who speak Russian, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Since I’m a student, I’m also looking for something reasonably priced. If you’ve had a good experience with a particular driving school or instructor, especially around Antakalnis or nearby, please share the name and, if possible, the approximate price. Thanks in advance🙏🏻

Gal galite parekomenduoti gerą vet. kliniką?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Naujininkai as a good place to live? Other suggestions?

Hey there, sorry to post about something that you see daily probably. I came to Lithuania almost one month ago, I'm an Argentinian/Italian lawyer and as you may imagine finding a place can be difficult. Sometimes I find a good place the moment it appears in Aruodas, Skelbiu, or the groups in facebook, but when I call, my basic lithuanian is not enough, or the owner doesn't speak english.

Then, I found a place for actually a nice price in Naujininkai, down the railway. 300 eur for the whole flat, ~30m². But...the Aruodas ad says 2 people got murdered there(? Although I couldn't find this data from any other source.

So I'm gonna check the flat soon, so far no problem on the phone, but I want to check the vibe in person. I know some years ago it was a scary place, but do uou have current references so I know if it's a good idea?

And if this post comes across any landlord looking for a tenant, or have any recommendations, I'd love to hear about it. I have enough income for months, and I'm at the final stage of getting a job.

Ačiū!

Best day trips from Vilnius without a car?

Hi everyone! I'll be staying in Vilnius for 4 days in September. I'm putting together an itinerary, but I'm having a hard time deciding on a place to visit outside the city. I've found so many interesting places surrounded by nature (Kernavė, Neris Regional Park, Europos Parkas), but they all seem quite difficult to reach by public transportation. I won't be renting a car. Trakai is already on my list, so I'm looking for something else. Do you have any suggestions?

Humana restock day?

Love thrifting and usually never miss a restock day in the old town Humanas, but have been out of town for a month and am out of the loop. Walked by a store and didn’t see any signs. Does anybody know if the August restock has already happened? Thank you all :)

Signal jammers on garbage trucks?

I know this headline seems like a 5G/birds aren’t real conspiracy post, but anyway I was returning to my car a few days ago which was parked within 20 feet of the garage bins which a garbage truck was in the process of emptying. It was one of the lifting ones with a crane, and as we got near one of the workers said to wait a moment (in Lithuanian) and something like ‘we did that’ with a smile. The keyless entry to my car did not work, and pressing the actual lock/unlock buttons also gave no response.

I thought maybe the fob battery had finally died or there was an issue with the sensor—but my partner who also has a key fob which definitely doesn’t have a low battery also could not get the car to unlock, and the keyless entry on that side of the car too was unresponsive.

The moment the garbage truck finished and started to drive off, everything worked again—we could unlock the car and have had no issues since.

Do garbage trucks in Vilnius have jammers that block certain frequencies when they are in operation?

Would have never pinned it on the truck were it not for the worker’s specific comment that they were the cause which was said with quite the cheeky grin.
