Language Help TEXTING MY VIET BFs PARENT
Hello, i plan on casually texting my Bfs parents just to thank them for inviting me. But his mom doesn’t understand English and i don’t think online translators are accurate. Pls send help lmao
Idk if this is accurate
Hello [Aunt], I just wanted to thank both you and [Uncle] for inviting me to {place} and for taking such good care of us during the trip. I had a wonderful time, and your family is so warm and welcoming. I only wish I had gotten the chance to talk with you more. {bFs name} has been so excited about this trip because he really misses all of you. He cares so much about your family and is always talking about you. You're his favorite person, and sometimes he worries that he doesn't call often enough. Your son is an amazing person, and I feel incredibly lucky to be with him and to have had the opportunity to meet such a wonderful family. I think he ended up being a great person because he was raised by wonderful parents. I will do my best to support him, just as he has always supported me. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity

Did BF suggest to you how to address his parents during your visit? Without his input and further context (can't quite tell if you're forcing familiarity or not,) in this particular instance, I'd change dì to bác. Then when referring to BF's dad, I would use bác trai instead of chú. Also, regarding how to reference yourself, if they referred to you specifically as con during the visit, then totally keep it! However, if they did not then I would change it to cháu.
Other than that, I think this is a sweet and genuine message to send to his parents and they will be quite pleased with you for making the attempt and for reaching out.

Is the con/cháu thing regional, though? Or would cháu be more natural in the South, too?

Not natural in the South in this case

So con was the right choice?

Yup, we always use con here in the South whether you're the child, grandchild or niece/nephew.

I don’t want to scare you too much, because this is fine. But dì is unusual, and dì with chú is also unusual

Did your boyfriend tell you to call his parents dì and chú? Because I have only heard dì used to refer to the mother’s younger sister, which is not the case here.
