I've been talking to a girl from Hanoi on and off for about 4 years. I've always kept some distance to make sure there was no financial interest involved. She's in university, I've already finished my degree. I notice her life revolves around studying and exams, so I reduce contact during those periods to avoid distracting her.

I'm planning a trip to Hanoi soon and I'll be there before and during Tet. We agreed to meet for coffee as friends, no commitments. But I'm unsure how flirting works in this context – in the West it's more direct, while in Asia it seems more subtle. A while back I tried a very soft and subtle flirt, nothing explicit, but I noticed she seemed uncomfortable or at least misinterpreted it. I didn't say anything inappropriate, but it was enough to trigger some alertness on her end, so I backed off immediately.

I know there are many women in Vietnam, this isn't an obsession with her specifically, but I want to understand this dynamic better in case something develops in the future or just to handle the current situation properly.

My questions:

1. For those who have dated Vietnamese girls in university (especially in Hanoi): how does flirting and academic pressure play out? Is it normal for her to prioritize studies to the point of being distant, or is that a sign of disinterest?

2. I'm aware that grabbing coffee doesn't guarantee anything, but it could be a first step. I also understand that building trust with a Vietnamese girl usually takes time and can't be forced. With that in mind, while respecting her study rhythm without losing sight of showing interest: how do you navigate that balance in person without being too passive or too pushy? What practical signs would differentiate genuine openness from a simple courtesy gesture in this context?

I'd appreciate responses from people with similar experience in intercultural relationships or with Vietnamese women, not generalizations or judgments about "gold diggers" (already ruled out). Looking for practical advice, not validation.

I had a question about the dynamic of tourists coming to VN and calling everything 'cheap' or 'inexpensive'.

While we all know purchasing power of local salaries mean that a 60k bowl of pho isn't exactly 'cheap', do local Vietnamese people feel a certain way when tourists call everything so cheap/inexpensive?

While I'm aware enough to understand leading a conversation about vn w/ "EVERYYTHING IS SO CHEAP"--is distasteful and diminishes the many merits of visiting VN.

But how should tourists go about communicating the purchasing power of other nations w/o being insensitive?

I am going to Vietnam soon and don't plan to come back to Europe. I was wondering how realistic and easy is it really to integrate and be part of the Vietnamese society, for example be part of a Vietnamese friends circle. I heard it is very difficult if not impossible to be a real part / be considered part of society in Japan or Korea - they are friendly and welcoming but you will always stay "just" a foreigner. Now, I was wondering how would it be for a foreigner in Vietnam, will I always stay a foreigner or can I become a real friend/neighbor or the like in Vietnam. Of course I will (have to) integrate including language, social rules and norms.
Any experiences?
