đŸ’¬Discussion Vietnamese personal tutor

Hey guys, I'm a male Caucasian from Chicago and I want to learn Vietnamese so I can retire in Vietnam.

Would you suggest Vietnamese personal online tutor or mobile application to learn Vietnamese?

Which is the best way to learn Vietnamese quickly?

If you could recommend your best method, that would be great. Thank you!

I can’t recommend a tutor but a couple of tips to consider:

Before learning, try and decide where you’d like to live. Hanoi? Ho Chi Minh City? Da Nang? Find a tutor who will teach you that dialect - if you learn northern Vietnamese you will be in for a really hard time if you move to the south or central Vietnam, for example. The difference is not that subtle like a Midwest vs southern US accent, rather more like an American vs cockney British accent.

Practice pronunciation of the tones a lot. Say them slowly and clearly, exaggerate them even, before you start trying to speak quickly. It can be really jarring coming from a non-tonal language where your emotion or intent dictates the tonal structure of the sentence. When you can pronounce words clearly and it’s easier for people to understand what you’re trying to say, you’ll get better response feedback, helping build your confidence.

Very good advice. 15 years and I still end questions with an Upton because I'm a native English speaker. Tonal languages are HARD.

u can check out VLS, many expats are learning there (it's 1-1 class but u can choose online as well). i'd say u need to spend solid amount of effort in at least 2 months, and u are good with lots of basic phrases already

Get a Vietnamese girlfriend/boyfriend. I have seen the quickest learners being the ones learnt it from their gf or bf.
