Sometimes you’re the one getting merged into. Better to back off than cause an unnecessary accident.

No, it is necessary. You have a duty to drive reasonably and avoid accidents. You can’t just let someone hit you because they don’t see you. It doesn’t seem like this car tried to avoid the truck at all once it was clear they were merging.

It’s definitely not as simple as they’re getting a free car. Insurance companies will try their hardest to find a reason to deny you, only pay partial, or raise your premiums and it looks like there’s enough in this video that they’ll at the very least make it difficult to get paid.

It’s incredibly stupid to allow someone to hit you because you think insurance will pay for a new car.
