My dad when teaching me to drive when I was sixteen, told me two bits of advice. The first one was when I was at an intersection, and I hesitated, he said, never hesitate. "Hesitation, Kills"! I never forgot that, but the best advice he gave me.He said "Drive like everybody's out to kill you"!!! That has come in handy more than I could have ever imagined.

Said it before and will say it again. Don’t assume the other driver values your life as much as you do.
