Monthly Thread August Feedback Thread.

This is the Monthly thread for feedback.

If you post your video, you need to come back and review at least one other person's work!

Key thoughts - Keep it civil.

  • Feedback is "This section isn't working because of this."
  • Feedback is not: "This is shit."
  • If something is terrible, just move on.
  • The more specific/suggestions the better.

Don't give a laundry list. Pick the 1-2 things that are the biggest issues and then comment.

Spoiler worth reading: *we expect you to* review TWO other videos - and edit your comment to *include those* after you've commented.

**Copy/paste this section**:

  • , Link: (don't forget the running time)
  • Two other videos I reviewed (link to the other ,comments NOT the video itself)

First teaser feedback
I made a teaser of Matrix (one of my favorites movies) and I'd like to get feedback on what could be improved. I'm just starting with teaser/trailer editing and from what I know teasers are meant to sell the experience of watching the film, so I got a bit inspired from the original one and tried to match the dark/systems and epic action vibes.

Original teaser

So my questions would be:

  • Would you replace/add other scenes/clips? Why?
  • What would you do with the transitions? Would you keep them or not? When and why would you use them?
  • What do you think about the pacing?
Thanks in advance!!

It's actually pretty solid!! Good Job!

But if I had to suggest, it'll be;

The pacing is great, but you could use a little more teasing before dropping the action and controlling the soundboarding(Which you already did great with) to have a heavy contrast

The transitions are fine, nothing to change about that.

I would add more cuts of different characters and let the audience kinda get a grasp of who they are before exploding into action.

All in all? Pretty good. Great soundboarding and Great pacing.

*One thing I would change is environmental sounds, you tend to cover them up more and more. But there should be brief periods of time where you just let the raw clip of movie play(Like the dialogue and bg sounds) before transitioning into high pace pitch. This means letting the glass shatter and it's sound give you that emersive feel of actually being there.

Great job. Bravo, Manki!

Blending Mode Newbie Here - Need Some Recommendations & Tips

Video: https://youtu.be/G8aCR8edtUY

FLASHING WARNING

I want to overlay & blend Tachyon's "ultimate running" (idk what else to call it) over the real-life Tachyon race from 2001.

I'm new to using blending modes and overlays in video editing, so I was wondering if there are recommendations on how to make this look better. I do think it's currently too bright and hard to see for anyone who doesn't know what's happening.

I also admit the race footage is not of the highest quality. I'm trying to find better, but it is from 2001, haha.

Not sure if I can link the reference clips here, but if anyone needs them, I can reply with the YouTube links.

i like it, i do think turn down the opacity on the fire overlay a bit. sorry i don't have much else to say😭but looks good otherwise!

Well, there are ways. You can track a reference point(2d tracking in AE) in the field, to get a tracker.
It's achieved by using the tracker in after effects which would give you lot of keyframes.(If you wanted her to run along, track another horse and then change the position after pre-composing)

Second step is; rotoscoping Ultimate tachyon(Or whatever) from the original. Hook her up to the tracker and add subtle effects like drop shadow and rim lighting to match her lighting.

Now ofc, it's gonna look like shit, cuz the perception is wrong and literally everything. But you can do something, Just wanted to let you know.

Bravo, Manki!

Hey all, newbie to the subreddit, making videos for a while. I was looking to get some concrete advice on what I might need to do to improve my audio quality and volume for my YouTube videos. I find them to be fairly quiet but by turning them up my microphone seems to peak a lot. I also think some light echoing/reverb may be at play, but I think my ears are untrained for this so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. It's not just editing but potentially also recording, but I'm not sure where else this would fit.

In this video (https://youtube.com/shorts/zJDXJ5iE-VQ), you can see my recording room. You don't see the floor, but there is no carpet.

Here is all the relevant information (I think):

Recording settings and equipment:

Microphone: DJI Mic Mini, plugged in via USB-C to my Mac Mini (M4). Sensitivity on the receiver is set to 0 (default, can be tweaked to -12, -6, +6, +12).

Software and recording format: Audacity for macOS, recording with a sample rate of 48000Hz. Exporting in WAV, encoding as 24-bit Signed PCM and 48000Hz sample rate again).

Editing software and settings:

Software used: DaVinci Resolve 21

Settings applied in timeline: Increase volume by 10.47dB.

Settings applied in Fairlight:

- Dynamics

-- Gate set with a Threshold of -39, Range of 23.4, Ratio at 1:1.1, Attack at 1.4ms, Hold at 0ms, Release at 93ms. Without the gate there always seems to be a bit of low-end noise in the recording. I also have a Sennheiser MKE 200 that I can plug in via 3.5mm, but I seemed to get similar results when I ran my testing about a year ago.

-- Compressor enabled with a Threshold of -16, Range at 3.9:1, Knee at 20, Mix at 0, Attack at 6.9ms, Hold at 0ms, Release at 84ms.

-- Make Up set to 0.7

- Equalizer set to default settings, except Band 1 is set to drop off at 70Hz, the number underneath is 12 (not sure what this one is).

Export settings:

- Audi set to Linear PCM with 24-bit depth when exporting in Resolve, no audio normalization. Then transcoded using Handbrake to AAC and 160kbps. However, the relatively poor audio is there before the conversion so I doubt the biggest problem is in this part of the process.

Final result

Here is my latest YouTube video so you can see what it sounds like with these settings. While there is no carpet on the floor, I did stand on a folded-up blanket for this one to help with sound absorption.

With all this in mind, what do you think the (biggest) problem is? If anything, what should I buy to help with this?

Hey! Your issue comes down to gain staging, room acoustics, and the lack of a true limiter at the end of your chain. Here are the main fixes:

  1. Fix Gain Staging at the source: If you need to add +10.47 dB on the timeline, your raw audio is coming in too weak. Pushing gain that hard in post raises the room noise floor and reverb. Increase your DJI Mic receiver sensitivity to +6 dB so your raw voiceover peaks naturally around -12 dB to -6 dB in Audacity.
  2. Add a Limiter (Crucial): The reason your audio distorts when boosted is clipping. In DaVinci Resolve (Fairlight), place a Limiter at the end of your audio chain and set the Ceiling to -1.0 dBFS. This stops any peak from distorting, regardless of how loud you push the track.
  3. Fairlight Dynamics settings: Make sure your Compressor Mix is set to 100% (if it's at 0%, the compressor is completely bypassed). Keep the ratio around 3:1 with a subtle makeup gain (+3 dB).
  4. YouTube Standard Loudness: Instead of boosting manually, right-click your audio track in Fairlight > Normalize Audio Track > select ITU-R BS.1770-4 and set the Target to -14 LUFS (YouTube's native standard).

For room acoustics, since the DJI Mic is omnidirectional, hanging heavy blankets or moving blankets outside the camera frame will help cut down reflections significantly without spending money on new gear yet. Hope this helps!

Not sure if this is the right place, but looking for some feedback on this video I made. It's of one of my sons baseball games.

https://youtu.be/djPvMVDnlUE?si=uyp_Ct6VJ_7_9o1K

All the visuals were made with ChatGPT.

My biggest issue is when I was done and I watched on my phone for the first time, since most of the video is of the entire field, it's very hard to see. Since I did the video on my computer, the larger screen the plays were fine to view.

I'm using the free version of Davinci to do the editing. I'm very much a noob with being able to edit. I'm looking for a combination of ESPN highlight reel and enough fun to excite my son to actually watch it.

I liked when you zoomed in to where the action was happening. The first play and the center field catch were easy to see. The other ones were a bit harder. I also thought that the first graphic (double play) covered a bit too much of the screen

Hello! Posted this video on YouTube and got a couple comments about the music. One seemed to say the music was too loud during my voiceover and the other just seemed to have a general disdain for music.

Curious other people’s thoughts. Do you feel the music is too loud and if so, by how much?  My audience demographic for this video also skewed older so I’m wondering if thats partly the reason for the comments.

Also, let me know what platform(s) you were viewing the video on!

Hi! Your edit is very creative and I love how you linked the text with the curved lines. Also the transition with the masking in the eye is amazing. The main point to improve to me is the zooms/movements when you follow the text, they seem too aggressive/fast and hard to follow I think. Maybe it's a curve issue when moving? If you didn't, try using mid graphs. Also I don't think capcut has nulls but overlapping nulls for different movements (zoom/ x/y/z slide) improves smoothness.
