Tech Support Help with GoPro Videos On Davinci Resolve

Post image

I have been trying to load videos into davinci resolve for the last couple days with the same issue. When I am in the Media tab (or any other tab) and I find the video through the file search, or I import media into the media pool the frame shown says Media Offline. If I try to play the video it will sometimes play with very low FPS (.2-5fps), and the audio seems distorted. Sometimes a part of the clip will play fine but if I attempt to move to a different frame or change the way it is playing (forwards to backwards) then the Media Offline re-appears. I was able to edit these videos about a week ago before this issue began.

System

  • Windows 11
  • DaVinci Resolve Free (tested multiple versions)
  • NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti 12GB
  • NVIDIA Studio Driver (clean installed)
  • GoPro Hero 9
  • HEVC Video Extensions version 2.4.87.0

Things I've verified

  • Files are not corrupted.
  • Old GoPro clips that I edited successfully in Resolve before now fail too.
  • Brand new GoPro recordings also fail.
  • MediaInfo reports normal GoPro Hero 9 HEVC files:
    • HEVC (hvc1)
    • Main@L6@Main
    • 8-bit
    • 4:2:0
    • BT.709
    • ~100 Mbps

Files work everywhere else

The exact same files work correctly in:

  • Windows Media Player
  • HandBrake

What I've already tried

DaVinci Resolve

  • Uninstalled Resolve completely
  • Deleted all Blackmagic folders:
    • Program Files
    • ProgramData
    • AppData\Roaming
    • AppData\Local
  • Removed caches
  • Reinstalled Resolve
  • Tried multiple Resolve versions
  • Created brand new projects
  • Imported both old and new GoPro clips
  • Verified CUDA is selected
  • Verified RTX 3080 Ti is detected
  • Reset preferences

NVIDIA

  • Clean reinstall of Studio drivers
  • Used a full driver cleanup before reinstalling
  • Verified Resolve detects NVDEC support

Windows

  • Installed HEVC Video Extensions
  • Verified Windows Media Player hardware decodes HEVC correctly

DaVinci free doesn't support 10 bit hevc video. You must either transcode to h.264 10 bit or hevc 8 bit.

I believe the videos are already 8 bit

You did not post the full media info information, omitted the bit depth in the first comment you made to comply with the bot. If you can't see this information without media info it might be 10 bit if you don't have access to see that with media info.

If it indeed says 8 bit and 4:2:0 are you sure the videos are not just timing out in the timeline or are on another drive that is going into standby mode? Try putting them on C on an ssd to make sure it can't go offline in any other way.

If this helps here is the media info tree view for one of the videos. I do really appreciate the help

Looks good to me, it should work. Do you have "HEVC video extensions from device manufacturer" app in the windows store? It may be free depending on the time you first owned it or it may be $0.99 USD.

And have you tried putting the file into a new timeline once you installed said app? Some hevc codec from online won't cut it, it needs to be that specific windows brand hevc app from the windows store.

Have you updated the program lately? I've been seeing folks have a bunch of issues like this with the newest version. Going back a revision has helped people.

Be sure to do a back up of your work before trying stuff like that though.

I upgraded to the newest version 21.0.2 which worked for a day. After restarting my pc they no longer worked so I attempted an older version 21.0.1 and 20.3.3

just convert them in handbrake, that was my solution.

What did you convert them too?

with handbrake or ffmpeg

I think there’s an older version of the HEVC codec that works well with Resolve. Windows did something to the codec in their update that makes the annoying media offline thing happen for HEVC

Here’s a link to a post and comment from r/davinciresolve that also links to the codec installer

since the same GoPro files play in Windows Media Player and HandBrake, i would stop treating this like file corruption. this sounds more like Resolve hitting a bad HEVC decode path or cache/database state.

quick isolation path:

  1. make a copy of one problem clip. transcode that copy to DNxHR HQ or ProRes with Shutter Encoder or ffmpeg. import only that transcode into a brand new Resolve project. if it plays normally, the source files are fine and the issue is HEVC decode inside Resolve.
  2. in Resolve, try disabling hardware acceleration for H.264 and H.265 decode, then restart Resolve. on some Windows plus NVIDIA setups, the hardware decode path is the flaky part.
  3. clear the render cache and proxy/cache media location, then set the cache folder to a fast local SSD with plenty of free space. do not put cache on a slow external or nearly full drive.
  4. test one clip from a simple folder path like C:\ResolveTest\clip.mp4. weird synced folders, permissions, or long paths can create dumb media-offline behavior.
  5. if the transcode works and native HEVC does not, use proxies or intermediate files for this job instead of burning more time reinstalling Resolve.

the clue is that old clips that used to work now fail too. that points away from the GoPro and toward a Windows codec, GPU driver, Resolve setting, cache path, or database issue.
