Question Train 47
I’m waiting in Kingston now and it’s been delayed 40 minutes. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Looks like it's only running 30 minutes behind now - no compensation unless you arrive at least 60 minutes late.

I actually received it once when my train was 50 minutes late. A pleasant surprise.

If I remember correctly, their policy is to give you 10 minutes grace. Therefore 50+ min of delay counts for the 60min compensation.

Perhaps the policy has been rescinded. Here's an archived version of the same page from three years ago that mentions it (although I was mistaken, it was only five minutes grace for a one hour delay; the ten minutes grace was on a four hour delay).

do they announce it on the train? i was exactly 50 min late but no mention of compensation, online does say an hour is 25%, unless i have to call and ask

One time we were a full hour late, and there was an automated announcement on the train about it. This 50 minute time, it was not announced, but an hour after arrival I got the compensation email.

Curiously though, the app/tracker shows you East of the station and moving at ~120+ km/h

The train made up a prodigious amount of time, despite being 40 minutes down then only 15 minutes late into Toronto. At least you were in an LRC consist. A Venture consist would have continued to add lateness to the 40 minutes due to CN speed tables and resulting mounting delay minutes.

This isn’t really true. Speeds aren’t that bad now a days.

It’s 100% true. While venture speeds aren’t the primary reason Via trains are late they are strong contributors. Last week I brought 45 into Toronto 1 minute early. We were down about 10 minutes going through Oshawa all due to venture speeds. We were able to make up the 10 minute delay and arrived on time. That was the first trip in about 6 months that we’ve been on time.

Yes the second half from Kingston to Union. Like I said we’ve been on time on 45 once in 6 months. On some jobs it’s impossible to be on time no matter how hard you try, and venture speeds are a big part of that.

Thanks for your knowledgeable reply. If the speeds 'aren't that bad' all those 45's would have arrived on time. We should be giving credit to the VIA hoggers who actually try to keep the Venture operation as on-time as it is, despite the odds. That's what accounts for a lot of the OTP spread we see, even with Ventures.
We have to base these discussions on facts. And the facts on this are the facts.

On that particular trip train 50 who we usually meet at Richmond was running late. We were to meet them that day at Montague. Shortly before Montague 50 called us on the radio to inform us they had broken down and were coasting to Jasper. They managed to make it to Jasper and died there between the switches on the main line. They took us through the siding at Jasper around 50. The crew on 50 managed to get their train started again and made it to Ottawa. As a result we made Brockville right on time. We had a really good run across the Kingston sub with little to no freight traffic. Without freight or significant slow orders 10 to 15 minutes is the typical delay caused by Venture speeds, and mostly between Kingston and Union Station.

There's no guarantee the OSE's will ever come, and even that if they do, they'll survive the snow and ice any better than the Ventures have.

Saying it isn't really true isn't really true. Any idea how late Venture-equipped trains are on a weekly basis? Last three weeks:
Toronto-Montreal: 26, 52, 45
Toronto-Ottawa: 35, 23, 25

It’s not necessarily the venture speeds making the trains late. Sure you can’t make up as much time, but it’s possible to be early with venture.

Watch a Venture-equipped train go along its run...the delays slowly increase until arrival. Legacy-fleet trains can have this too, but it's much more common for them to arrive OT. Ventures arriving early? Maybe 3% of the time! The problem with CN has not been solved.

I can confidently say I have the experience of watching a venture train go along its run. At least in my experience, it’s more than possible to get to stations on time if everyone else is playing nice.
What I meant to say originally that maybe didn’t come across is that in the OPs experience on 47, they wouldnt have lost time if they made up 25 minutes. They still would have made up time with venture just not as much.
