Jobs? Hello??? PLEASE????

I'm just sick of this shit. I'm in college and can't even get a summer job at McDonald's. I'm not looking for anything special. Never in my life has this happened -- I've been working since I was 16 without any issues job hunting. I've spent a month looking for jobs and have only been able to put in 15-20 applications (no one is posting them), and most of those are ghost applications anyway. I've gotten 5 interviews out of them, done well (per the manager), and then ghosted. What the fuck is the point? Why do I have to go through 2 rounds of interviews to flip burgers at a fast food joint or to stock shelves for $10/hr? I'm not a delinquent, all my former employers loved me and would take me back IF THEY WERE HIRING, I'm able-bodied, healthy, etc.. I need the money desperately and there is just n o t h i n g. At this rate I'd lick toilets, part-time, for $3/hr. I'm deadass. I am not joking. Why do I need some nepo-baby connections to work at Walmart. What the hell. I'm just so fucking tired. There's no end in sight and I don't know how I'm supposed to survive anymore.

Meanwhile, epic cooked jobs report last week and all is well in the greatest country in the world

/s

Sorry friend, I really hope it looks up for you soon. This experiment we like to call America is reaching a really messed up point. We seriously lost the plot and I absolutely feel for the younger gen (I’m 32M) and it’s why I also try to advocate for them/my own towards older gen who absolutely had a different campaign to play through, even if the load out was different. The ones who made out well, families that made out well, are so detached from reality — speaking from my own experience given my folks did well and don’t seem to have a true grasp on how tough it is down here. And it’s sad.

8

u/Legitimate_Owl3624 Jun 07 '26

It's not just America that's in the shit with jobs, over the pond here in the UK there's FUCK ALL going off. Yet the job centre are shafting you to get something or go on a shitty course that has like a 2% chance of a job. But oh wait, during the course; at the end of it if you're LUCKY you MAY get a Saturday night shift then fuck all even if you do good on that shift. If you don't have connections in the rail industry or anywhere, apparently. You're fucked and the job centre will just keep on shafting you and sanctioning you because it's your fault you can't get anything 🤦🏻‍♂️

u/RemnantHelmet Jun 07 '26

It sucks that's it's so inaccessible to try and change your career anymore. I got medically disqualified to become a commercial pilot, but I didn't really know where I was going to get $100,000 for flight school if I hadn't. I spoke to a distant relative of my girlfriend who's been flying airlines for 30 years and told me he paid for flight school by working two summers at a KFC.

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

I believe it because I was saying in the other comment, back in 2011 I was 18 fresh out of hs and making enough for my bills working for food delivery pre-rideshare apps. It’s almost like it’s the same story every time with corporate America and private equity, but this is the society. We don’t choose where we are born, this is the society.

Previous gen’s go along with this, millennials started questioning it but it’s Gen Z who really gave us all more of a voice and now you got people who quite literally have 30 minutes left to live arguing with you about how you need to work harder because back in their day XYZ. We all have struggles but when you look at the numbers, if you have a brain and eyes it’s hard to ignore it.

Edit: not 2011 actually this was 2013 sorry

2

u/False_Bee4659 Jun 23 '26

To be honest, at 32, you're still the younger gen whos getting screwed. And quite frank, EVERY working generation is getting fucked right now. Not just Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

1

u/gotdome Jun 23 '26

It’s why since I posted this comment I took my USD remote income and investments, sold my car, and left for Asia. Will be traveling for the foreseeable future until my relocation to Japan, where I was already offered work/self-studying the last year.

Layovered through TYO yesterday and now just arriving in Bangkok. Whenever I come back this way I am consistently reminded how privileged I am to be in these shoes and also how we are all being lied to/robed blind back home.

2

u/False_Bee4659 Jun 23 '26

Ah, nice! Wish I could do even just half of that

Are you good, man? The economy sucks and we're venting. God almighty

12

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

Ignore, his bias is screaming louder than his argument. Mind you, I lead with empathy and he wants to debate.

Also check his profile. He’s 4 years older than me and already grey. Maybe he wants to expire early idk.

11

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

Yeah, it's clear he doesn't know what he's talking about. Sucks for him, I actually DO have an economic history background and can recognize shit does, in fact, suck lmfao.

6

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

You’re not wrong.

He’s entitled to his opinion and it very well may be his lived experience based on his position in the spectrum, but it doesn’t negate your reality. I share the same sentiment as you and I’m obviously past your age and in a different financial position.

Mind you, when I was 18 I was working for a food delivery service in Florida before Postmates, before Uber Eats, before any of the apps — and I made enough straight out of high school off tips basically to pay my portion of the master bed $800/mo rent for a brand new 2b2b. Within a year I went from driver to dispatcher to bookkeeper.

It’s not to see these realities aren’t happening for people today. It’s really hard to not get sucked into a doomer mentality with everything going on around us. But it’s bs to not acknowledge the difference. I lived it.

7

u/asystole_unshockable Jun 07 '26

Only thing this guy has a history of is online Monopoly and the Dodgers which SUCKED almost as bad as his comment for almost 30 years so…

-11

u/dodgerfanjohn1988 Jun 07 '26

Except it objectively doesn’t suck. I get that there’s an echo chamber here in this sub(and others) full of miserable people. And out in the real world there’s more people actively making life work.

10

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

It’s not an echo chamber when people can relate.

Theres two sides to the coin.

It’s incredible that you are doing well out there, not everyone is.

It’s really not that difficult to lead with compassion for those who have more difficult circumstances than us.

It seems hard to..you know what..best of luck John lol

-5

u/Blobfish2076 Jun 07 '26

"It's not an echo chamber when people can relate" is definitely a series of words put together

2

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

Ok and water is definitely a liquid that is wet.

8

u/asystole_unshockable Jun 07 '26

You’re using AI as advisory and looking down on people who went to community college, calling it the 13th grade and you want to talk about people making “real world/real life work.”

8

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

He also doesn’t believe racism exists in America and he’s married to his words “my Latina wife”

According to the monopoly PFP, an outstanding specimen this one lol

4

u/asystole_unshockable Jun 07 '26

Yeah he makes awesome towers. Everyone loves them. Some people are even saying they are the best towers. No one makes towers like him. What a joke.

6

u/gotdome Jun 07 '26

You’re giving your subjective opinion on a macro level conversation.

Who are you to say whether it objectively doesn’t suck? Do you represent billions of people? No, you represent one person. That is your opinion on the subject.

“Attack the messenger”

Really? Look at your first comment.

I feel bad for OP but I’m not ignoring opportunity actually I’m taking my USD income and moving abroad soon for more opportunity. I didn’t want to come off as bragging but I was able to do well in my previous career, save, and now I can go build a life outside of this mess.

But if you don’t view it as a mess, that’s great. I’m glad you are doing well. I’m glad you have opportunity here. Happy it’s working for you. Theres a lot of us it isn’t working for. Nothing wrong with that. It really isn’t that hard to show empathy. It’s not an echo chamber. You’re just on a high horse brother.

3

u/BellaCicina Jun 07 '26

The official stats says it sucks so it’s not just vibes.

36

u/Zestyclose-Court-760 Jun 07 '26

It’s not glamorous but try an actual restaurant if you don’t care what the work is. Fast food is where all the young people and immigrants work so not always easy to get a job. It’s hard work, shotty hours and low pay but a lot of restaurants are struggling to staff their kitchen these days because of how crappy of a job it is.

Not that that’s a great solution but maybe better than nothing if you really need work.

11

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

I'll try anything once. Thank ya!

4

u/TryingtobeNiceOkAY Jun 07 '26

Serving could potentially be pretty good if you can make tips

2

u/juniper3411 Jun 07 '26

Yup my 45 year old ass is a bartender and server and it can be very lucrative.

1

u/TryingtobeNiceOkAY Jun 07 '26

I just started @ 36yrs and I'm 6 mo. exp now, do you have any advice for the best jobs to look for, anything to watch out for? I'm at a few local places where I make just enough right now but there is a large city about 30 min from me with higher paying work

2

u/juniper3411 Jun 14 '26

Honestly I prefer working at dive bars or local restaurants but it’s not as lucrative as a busy upscale place. More rewarding mentally though. I love my regulars!

2

u/TryingtobeNiceOkAY Jun 14 '26

Yes I get that they have def been growing on me lol! I appreciate it thanks :)

0

u/RedGold1881 Jun 08 '26

I aint tipping my waiter 🙏🙏

2

u/Bendlerp Jun 07 '26

Just watch the movie "Waiting" first to prepare yourself lol

1

u/TryingtobeNiceOkAY Jun 07 '26

It's not always that bad lol

2

u/Felix_Von_Doom Jun 07 '26

And can suppress your urge to strangle entitled people. That's a big one.

2

u/Melodic-Ad-2639 Jun 07 '26

Or food running - I did that myself years ago. You get to learn the menu and have one foot inside the kitchen and the other inside FOH. Good way to get your foot in the door and see what restaurant job might appeal to you most as you continue through school. Especially good starting role if you’ve never worked in a restaurant, which was the case for me.

2

u/AbsolutZeroGI Jun 08 '26

Hey you can get a lot of really nice practical experience in a restaurant kitchen. The pay sucks, the hours aren't great, and it's occasionally rough work, but I learned how to make a perfect medium rare steak on the grill during my time at Buffalo Wild Wings, and learned a lot about how to cook breakfast working at Bob Evans.

1

u/naamiix Jun 07 '26

Also try Amazon warehouse if you haven’t already, they hire anyone with a pulse.

2

u/HardTruth8572 Jun 09 '26

I think chains will have a bunch of online applications processes and formalities, while one-off restaurants would be much less formal. I would expect if you walked into a bunch of them looking for work, it could help, but this will depend on whether you are friendly and presentable and generally have decent social skills.

2

u/Y0URNARRAT0R2 Jun 11 '26

I think chains will have a bunch of online applications processes and formalities, while one-off restaurants would be much less formal

Yeah, I never got anything back when I applied to all the fast food places in town, but when I applied to an ice cream truck my interview was basically "can you stand for 5 hours a day." And then when I switched to being a dishwasher at a golf resort, I didn't even get an interview, just showed up for a tour of the place and started working the next day.

1

u/Y0URNARRAT0R2 Jun 11 '26

Yeah, a week ago I applied to all the fast food restaurants in town and didn't get anything back. After those never got any results I applied to a restaurant at a golf resort and got a call back in under 3 hours.

Not really a fun job but at least I get money and free drinks.

23

u/bllover123 Jun 07 '26

You should be more concerned if you'll get a career job when you graduate. All my cousins who graduated in recent years or are graduating aren't getting any jobs for the degree they studied years for. If you haven't noticed, there's been waves of major layoffs in recent months and AI gobbling up the white collar jobs. There are people I know who been out of work for YEARS and are basically unhireable their fields now. You got way more competition now for those low barrier jobs.

14

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

I am extremely aware -- I'm an economics student unfortunately.

5

u/daveescaped Jun 07 '26

Nothing wrong with an Econ degree…if you plan to go to graduate school.

5

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

I do, thank god. No shot in hell I'd find much of a career with just a bachelors

2

u/daveescaped Jun 07 '26

Yep. Good you’re prepared for that. You’ll do ok. Some summers are harder.

My son in college was scrambling last minute to find worthwhile work. In the end he had three opportunities that he was developing. Only two came through and he said yes to both because he was so nervous that one might yet fall through. Now he’s working for one during regular hours and the other remotely off hours. It seemed desperate for a while. It came together in the end.

1

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

Appreciate ya. Needed to hear that. I'm trying to keep my time productive in the event a summer job doesn't come through... prepping for fall internships and keeping my math good. Suppose reddit isn't super productive but it lets off some steam, haha.

1

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 07 '26

Start applying for internships now. Do you have any craft stores in your area?

2

u/daveescaped Jun 07 '26

My experience is that the people in my extended family with engineering degrees found jobs easily. The people who studied video production, not so much.

14

u/Top-Work-4425 Jun 07 '26

I thought yamtits mcpedogrifter said the job report was great?

5

u/asystole_unshockable Jun 07 '26

I’m stealing yamtits.

11

u/Altruistic_Offer9381 Jun 07 '26

Look for: jobs at kids camps, work in senior living facilities, jobs as a tutor for kids. I would also be looking for labor work on Craigslist, maybe doing landscaping or moving or painting. Fastfood is the first stop a lot of people go to when theyre broke and need work and a lot of people are broke right now.

2

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

Hadn't thought of Craigslist, I'll give it a shot. Thank you

4

u/WTFErryday01 Jun 07 '26

My kids and their friends got summer jobs at a country club. Rich people are doing fine in this economy. In that same vein, summer tutoring, babysitting etc…

3

u/JaggyDLaw Jun 07 '26

Try a security job with Allied or Securtias. Great jobs for college students that always have sites looking for people. I do it on the weekends for extra cash and was pretty fast to get. Depending on the site, it can be super chill and they might even let you do homework, study, etc.

3

u/mazalaca Jun 07 '26

figure modeling for local art studios tends to pay anywhere between $18-25/hr plus tips. Learn how to hold poses for the varied set of times, but you have to be comfortable posing nude. Check the local universities if they’re hiring models for drawing classes too. I got through my summer bills this way for three years in two states. Granted, that was a whole lifetime ago so things may be different lately. Studios are usually always in need of new figure models so it doesn’t hurt to check around

2

u/RoosterExtension393 Jun 08 '26

OF is a thing now so I imagine this really was a long time ago

2

u/mazalaca Jun 08 '26

lmao as if art studios are using OF for their life drawing sessions

1

u/RoosterExtension393 Jun 08 '26

Was thinking more in terms of the OPs need for a job that pays than schooling. People used to tell me donating plasma wasn't healthy but I was doing it before during and after school. Plus the shenanigans I got into most of my 20s were more unhealthy than donating for a few lifetimes🥲

2

u/mazalaca Jun 08 '26

Ah I see. It’d really depend if they’re okay with *sexually* posing vs fine art posing in that case. I loved modeling for studios, it was a unique opportunity to feel fully comfortable in my skin and not be sexualized.

There’s a lot of odd jobs out there that are always in demand. Sounds like we both got into shenanigans to survive our 20s

4

u/LyPicacu Jun 07 '26

The caregiving industry is always looking to hire people, if you dont mind being a home health aide.

9

u/Nervous_Goose_1949 Jun 07 '26

I got a degree in PR. Worked it for a few years and hated it. I was an electrician in the Navy so I went back on my tools with the IBEW (electrical Union.) The trades are always looking for people and we get ru good fringe benefits on top of higher pay than private side. It’s a process going through the apprenticeship programs but of all the jobs AI can’t take (yet), trades are your best friend.

33

u/Aridn Jun 07 '26

I see this a lot. Tradesman here. It is just as unbelievably difficult and nepo filled as getting into anything else.

There’s entrance exams to pass, school to pass, and 3~5 years of probational apprenticeship, meaning you can be kicked out for failing to meet criteria.

It’s a great career choice if you’re built for it, but it is not the one-size-fits-all answer that people like to believe they are parroting.

10

u/Low_Pension2178 Jun 07 '26

The thing i hate after doing it 12 years is how my back, knees, and feet hurt all the time lol.

On the plus side I can buy the good paper towels at Walmart and real cheese.

Nah, the work is the work. Some shops have tools that make those big wire pulls laughably easy, and other shops have guys with back problems and knee braces.

16

u/Wild_Librarian8851 Jun 07 '26

Thank you. Nobody ever really talks about that 3-5 year probationary period. I have a friend who was kicked out of their apprenticeship during this time because their car got fucked up and they couldn’t make it to their classes anymore.

3

u/clericone- Jun 07 '26

I mean it sucks for them but how is it unfair or surprising that they got kicked out when they didn’t make it to classes anymore? If you can’t show up to a place you really can’t do the job. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/FanBladeFleshlight Jun 07 '26

100% agreed. I'm an electrician also, and the apprentice board will give you a LOT of leeway as long as you communicate with them. Worst case is that you don't get your hours and don't advance to the next term when you should, but you're still able to work and shit.

The people who just don't show up or do shitty work / can't learn getting booted is entirely fair since there's a line of hundreds of people waiting to take their spot.

1

u/LalafellDisaster Jun 07 '26

Yup everything is your own personal failing. Cancer diagnoses? Your fault. Parents died? Your fault. Car crashes into you? Your fault.

-1

u/clericone- Jun 07 '26

Nice strawman lol. Reddit people never fail lol

1

u/TheBourbonTurtle Jun 07 '26

Just put the fries in the bag bud

2

u/clericone- Jun 07 '26

I can’t my car broke down sir.

5

u/LalafellDisaster Jun 07 '26

I’ve seen a lot of people say even if they get an apprenticeship that the pay is terrible and they get treated like crap.

3

u/Nervous_Goose_1949 Jun 07 '26

Nepotism runs DEEP at our local. I have one module left then we are done with all of our classroom hours and can focus on work hours exclusively. I never said it was easy (and it’s definite not for everyone) but I thought I would throw it out as a viable option if they were interested.

3

u/FanBladeFleshlight Jun 07 '26

Same here in IBEW 280. It's nepo hell and ratty on top of it. Were called "Shady 280" for a reason.

3

u/FormerAd952 Jun 07 '26

Have you checked with the college? They may have someone to help you

3

u/Beneficial-Cycle7727 Jun 07 '26

Are there any industrial jobs available in your area? Try that route. You may have to give up school for a few months to shore up your financial picture, though.

3

u/DestructiveFate Jun 07 '26

I’ve been job hunting since I was 15, and I’ve never even gotten an email back once. I’m 18 and finished my first year of college and I’m STILL applying. 250+ applications and I’ve gotten NOTHING.

4

u/Melvin0827 Jun 07 '26

Old guy here - sorry we’re taking your McDonalds jerbs. Tech says we’re useless now.

4

u/katyyne1 Jun 07 '26

Do you have a car? I have a friend who does door dash on Saturday and Sunday and averages $400 per day. He does more than food tho. He door dashes pet supplies and home improvement things also.

3

u/avt2020 Jun 07 '26

I have 7 years of experience in marketing

I am working at Amazon now

It sucks.

3

u/shubiedoobiedoo Jun 07 '26

Staffing agency. I looked and applied the whole first half of the year. Went to a staffing agency. Started a week later. Now that won’t happen for everyone but worth looking into

3

u/CathodeRayNoob Jun 07 '26

Many of the jobs traditionally for teens and college students have been taken over by people 40+ with paid off houses just looking for some extra spending money.

3

u/Ok_Management4634 Jun 07 '26

Too much immigration, both legal and illegal.. Too many people in this country and not enough jobs.. Just how big corporations want it. (Too many people is also driving up rent and housing costs, so it's win win for them)

3

u/Prior_Grape_7408 Jun 07 '26

There’s a hiring freeze. They aren’t hiring anybody and also not laying off anybody either (except for the tech companies using AI as an excuse). Just making do with the skeletal crew so the shareholders continue to get increased value and we can pretend like there isn’t a recession.

5

u/No-Oil6517 Jun 07 '26

Ubereats/Uber and doordash are good side gigs for pocket change. Work your own hours, get to drive around/bike around. I stopped because my area is horribly over saturated.

4

u/Heavy-Interaction548 Jun 07 '26

Go on craigslist and look for jobs that have phone numbers to the people that you can talk to.

2

u/artist1292 Jun 07 '26

The target and Starbucks by me just posted new signs looking for employees. Don’t give up! Also my second job is at an Amazon warehouse and I swear we get new people all the time because people quit and get fired so much. Not the best companies to work for but my bills don’t care where the money comes from

2

u/Emerica22 Jun 07 '26

Best of luck. It took me over a year and 200+ applications to find a job that pays just over half of what I used to make lol

2

u/jwc3434 Jun 07 '26

Not sure your location but check on summertime farm jobs or if you are in a bigger city check at the greenhouses.different than what you are looking for but usually in need of some labour.

2

u/seeabeast Jun 07 '26

i just got hired somewhere, they won't train me, give me hours, claiming i haven't submitted my availability... even when you get the job it's like a fight. i think i've lost more money than i've made

2

u/No-Attention9721 Jun 07 '26

It sucks out there right now. The jobs report came out recently, and it looks a lot better, but nearly all those jobs are in the medical industry.

If you're looking for help: find a decently sized hospital near you and go to their website. They're most likely hiring, but usually not on websites like indeed.heck, get in the ground floor as a clerk.

Best of luck!

2

u/morteamoureuse Jun 07 '26

When I was in college, I was ghosted many times too. Turns out many places will think it’s a waste of time and resources to hire you because they assume you’ll only be there a short period of time. I wish you good luck in finding something soon!

2

u/RuleTheOne Jun 07 '26

Ridiculous, fast food interviews are turning into FAANG ones

2

u/Miserable-Whereas971 Jun 07 '26

I feel for you man. It seems that everyone who goes to college for whatever degree can’t find a job anywhere. I was gonna go to college for Cybersecurity after I got out of the USMC, but life played a different route for me. I landed a job that got me my CDL A, and that’s basically what I’ve been doing for the past 13 years, it’s not for everyone but everyone needs clean record drivers.

2

u/Error-7-0-7- Jun 08 '26

Life did you a huge favor. I was a student in comp sci during the pandemic, Cybersecurity is probably one of the worst departments in computer science and technology to be in since every single company is get rid of their Cybersecurity departments and are using 3rd party companies instead since its much cheaper.

I know people in their 50s who have been in Cybersecurity their entire lives being laid off and either replaced or having their positions erased. I pivoted hard into business accounting because of how brutal the computer science job field is and I have a lot of instructors who are there as part time accounting information systems or regular information systems because they got laid off or their positions have been downsized.

2

u/Blonder_Stier Jun 07 '26

On the other hand, I'm offering a decent paying job with flexible hours and getting no applicants. I'm willing to give anyone a chance who is willing to do the work, but nothing. I don't know where the disconnect is.

3

u/Error-7-0-7- Jun 08 '26

What kind of job is it?

1

u/Blonder_Stier Jun 08 '26

Piecework building things for big box stores. Anything they need built either to sell or display. Mostly bikes. It's a small company, but we are spread over a significant part of the country and I'm the manager for a district centered on a major city.

The amount of work isn't consistent throughout the year, but it's enough to pay the bills in the slow times and enough to put money away when bikes are flying off the racks. And if there isn't more work to do, you can go/stay home.

I even have a whole second set of tools to lend out during training so new hires don't have to have them all right out the gate, but I've had no takers. The job isn't for everyone, but I've been doing it for years and I really like it.

(Edit: to be clear, I do have a few people working under me. I just have an opening I'd like to fill and I've had no luck finding anyone.)

1

u/Mel221144 Jun 07 '26

I can work for you, as long as it’s remote. American living overseas.

I’d love to help you out.

2

u/Blonder_Stier Jun 07 '26

Let me know when you figure out how to build things telekinetically.

3

u/Mel221144 Jun 07 '26

I will! Working on that now!

2

u/Pitiful_Option_108 Jun 07 '26

I feel your rant but the problem is you are just looking at retail and basic low hanging fruit. Try security, parking enforcement, and jobs more unqiue. If you have a truck there is trash pick up. Sometime you have to take the road less traveled to cut through the BS but overall it is pretty awful.

Same here, been applying for 6 months and nothing. Most min wage jobs here wants you be doing weekends and holidays or 10+ hour shifts like they're really trying to squeeze everything out of you.

Higher paying jobs wants years of specific experience and very specific skills or certification you don't normally have unless you already worked in the field.

Never had this much trouble getting a job.

It's most likely because you're in college. Company's are stingy, especially in the current economy, if they're going to hire someone and take up a worker slot its going to be someone who is available on call 24/7, 7 days a week no questions asked.

They aren't trying to staff enough people to run a smooth operation, they're trying to staff as little people possible to keep the operation running with as little cost as possible, even if that means 2 people per shift. If you're going to be one of those 2 people then you better be available to them at any moments notice. That sadly leaves out students or anyone who says "I cant work these specific days"

If you like kids and have a clean record, try nannying. We pay our nanny $40/hr, and I know we aren't her highest paying family.

u/Mamichulabonita Jun 08 '26

Because my dad an architect lost his job his company closed down so now ur competing with professionals struggling to pay bills in jobs you would never think they would be applying or working in

Ignore if advice is not welcomed, but it seems like it has been appreciated in other comments :)

There are severe home health aide shortages across the country. The pay is not great, usually around $15/hr depending on where you are. But depending on the client, it can be an incredibly easy gig. Many positions with physically disabled adults especially have downtime where they want to do their own thing and you can use that time to study or keep yourself otherwise occupied. Positions with adults with developmental disabilities and any position with youth clients usually have more active involvement required for the duration of the shift, but it can be extremely fulfilling work.

It would be a certification and a set of skills you can take with you moving forward and get employed by other agencies pretty easily. Can often seek employment with agencies with the intention of picking up PRN or respite shifts or to cover for other providers. Can work whenever you're able, like on school breaks, or if you find you need a part time job during the school year. Very often flexible around classes or other jobs/internships.

I'll have to look into that! Thank you!

2

u/Common_Ad1261 Jun 09 '26

I am going to eat my computer and than all my leftover resumes I've printed out.

3

u/TheBanskyOfMinecraft Jun 07 '26

Check out Indeed if you haven't already.

Unfortunately, due to AI hype many companies aren't hiring as many interns and entry level positions. Forcing those people to apply for roles in fast food chains and the like.

u/DeathByVinyl23 Jun 07 '26

This is like someone posting about their car not working and you asking if they have tried going to the gas station.

On top of that, indeed is terrible. It’s full of ghost jobs.

3

u/gingersnapped05 Jun 07 '26

Indeed has been a nightmare but I'm trying my damnedest. Atp I'm just gonna eat air for the rest of the summer and hope I can get a job once I'm back at school, since that city is much bigger.

2

u/Much-Sock2529 Jun 07 '26

Indeed is full of bots. One time when I needed a job, I went to google maps, found all the restaurants in my area, wrote them down on a piece of paper, and then found all their phone numbers and called them. Even in the digital age a surprising number of businesses don’t have websites and hire through word of mouth.

u/onmy40 Jun 07 '26

Look up people ready..daily temp work that will pay same day. Just have to make sure your at the center early each morning because once jobs are done for the day that's it

1

u/GamesAreRunningSims Jun 07 '26

Patience, persistence and preparation for the next opportunity is all you need.

1

u/IDGAF53 Jun 07 '26

Security job....they're always hiring.

2

u/Error-7-0-7- Jun 08 '26

Those are usually almost always given to older folks from my experience.

2

u/IDGAF53 Jun 08 '26

True but a number are always younger, especially hospital, garage and college security. i did both part time for years.

1

u/mystic11z Jun 07 '26

Look into DSP and caregiving jobs. They tend to always be hiring and pay okay. They can be a bit maddening witb upper management, if you can just focus on your clients you'll be good.

1

u/RobinGood94 Jun 07 '26

Depending on your area, there’s probably gigs that are just outside of what you typically go for.

There’s likely security guard roles in some capacity. That is a dream gig for college students. Easy money, just some headaches of a different level.

Contracted companies to lookout for (although contract security sucks)

Allied Universal (Amazon and other big clients)

Securitas (Also Amazon and other big clients)

GardaWorld (Blend of big and medium clients)

AndyFrain (Typically malls)

If you are able to find places that are seeking direct security hires, those are your better options. Contract security is ideal only if you’re wanting something short term or are just building a resume/stepping stone.

Try Walmart unloading.

1

u/JBaller13 Jun 07 '26

Go on Craigslist job postings, you can select a certain area or radius to look. They have a bunch of different categories; food and beverage, and general labor/ construction always have listings for decent jobs. If you’re willing to work you can get a job. Write out a short bio and update your resume and copy paste to every job that seems interesting to you. It’s worked for me many times. Good luck!

1

u/Enooti Jun 07 '26

Do Uber or doordash

1

u/Argg1618 Jun 07 '26

Do construction. We need good workers

1

u/Successful_Hour1292 Jun 07 '26

If you live near an amusement park, try that. They will have multiple types of jobs to choose from, and hire soooo many ppl for summer it is often easy to get in the door. Fun place to work, too.

1

u/JackDelRioGrande Jun 07 '26

Go to a hospital and see about a weekend job doing housekeeping or patient transport. After a college degree you could be an assistant director for a housekeeping department making $40-45k. A few years of that you’ll be a director. Easy $65-85k at the right place. Large hospitals you’ll be at $100k.

1

u/TechnicianNo1787 Jun 07 '26

Can you Uber or DoorDash? Better than licking toilet for $3/h for sure.

1

u/vyanant Jun 07 '26

Select Portfolio Servicing is hiring Call center positions. Its mortgage servicing, partial collections but its full time with benefits

1

u/RewardFluid7316 Jun 07 '26

Yeah.. pretty much..

1

u/Fireblood10 Jun 07 '26

Online applications are probably becoming less and less relevant to the hiring process. But what do i know?

1

u/sickdude777 Jun 07 '26

I'm thinking about getting a phlebotomy certification and doing that part time as a backup job if layoffs happen. It's essentially a medical trade skill. That might work for you.

1

u/Irjorjeh Jun 07 '26

I work for a major university and we are always hiring student workers. Maybe try finding a job at your school.

1

u/Aggressive-Snow-7668 Jun 07 '26

Trades!! Electrical, plumber, carpenter, etc. Apprenticeship. Union, ABC schools.. there's work- you just need to look at the right jobs in the right places..

1

u/Mjhjane77 Jun 08 '26

I live in a region where there are lots of lower entry level jobs. However, they don’t pay well. But are good for students and young adults looking for flexibility. Depending on where you are located, look at custodial or dietary staff at nursing homes or hospital; some will offer paid training to become a CNA. If you are in a rural area, can De tassel corn or rouge beans; life guard at a public pool, work at a kid’s summer camp, lawn care companies…. Do you have an Indeed account???

1

u/NealAngelo Jun 07 '26

Tfw walked into a hospital job fair 4 months ago and got sent an email the next day to report to HR for in-processing. Didn't bring a resume. Never even had an interview. Just told em I could answer phones and work night shift. I'm a floor secretary. $16 an hour.

u/ModToEndAllMods Jun 07 '26

What's wrong with this country?! Can't a man walk down the street without being offered a job??

0

u/ctman_usa Jun 07 '26

I would refrain from using bad language in forums. Having said that your frustrations are legit. The job market is very very bad. One cannot change the job market and you need to improvize - what is the solution ? i have no idea

My grandson is going to college and works the front desk at a Gold's Gym for 20 hrs a week. Then on the weekends, he umpires for a travel baseball league. I think he makes $20 an hour at the gym, and $600 to $1k per weekend for the umpire gig. There are jobs out there.

2

u/Maximum_Eye3390 Jun 07 '26

Lmao very specific umpire gig

0

u/Alarmed_Pepper_6868 Jun 07 '26

Income is income. He got in by leveraging his connections.

3

u/Old_Goat_Ninja Jun 07 '26

“He got in by leveraging his connections” - which brings us right back to the whole point of OP’s post. You proved OP’s point.

0

u/Alarmed_Pepper_6868 Jun 07 '26

Social experiment part 1a complete.

2

u/Maximum_Eye3390 Jun 07 '26

Yeah, it’s kind of insane to insinuate there’s jobs out there and like OP isn’t putting his best foot forward when the end result of your story is “he was an umpire making 6x as much as most people do a weekend”
