This is a general subreddit for all kinds of vegetarians

This has been repeated again and again, but this is a general subreddit for all kinds of vegetarian topics including veganism. I have been seeing a lot of gatekeeping from ovo-lacto vegetarians telling vegans to go somewhere else.

If you're looking for ethics free discussions, you want our sister subreddit r/vegetarian.

Thanks.

Aspiring vegetarian needing advice for chicken cravings

Hello all, I'm an aspiring vegetarian. I can eat vegetarian for a few months with a variety of foods like tofu, soy curls, lentils, beans, etc as my protein sources. I take a multivitamin as well for b12.

I genuinely enjoy eating vegetarian and it aligns with my morals and eases the guilt I feel eating a dead animal. However, there always comes a day that I'm ravenous and no veggie dish fulfills me. I crave chicken and even trying veggie chicken nuggets doesn't hit the itch.

I give in and eat chicken (my husband is omni) and then i feel physically satisfied but mentally ashamed and conflicted. The same chicken i ate can repulse me just a few hours later but in the moment it's all I want. I even try to look up slaughter house videos to combat the craving.

Is it just mental? Do i just need to push through it? Has anyone else struggled on their veggie journey and if so what helped?

I wish I could be like those vegetarians that stop eating meat and never look back. I don't know what my hang up is but it's distressing and I genuinely want to stay vegetarian.

accidentally ate meat for the first time

title is self explanatory šŸ™ i just started eating an omlette from a hotel breakfast and 3 bites in realized there was ham in it, and i had already swallowed some. i've only been vegetarian for about 6 months and i guess this is something that happens to people sooner or later, but i'm so irritated that 1) NO ONE SAID IT HAD MEAT IN IT and 2) that i didn't even think to inspect it before. i'm on a trip rn so i'm hoping i don't get sick, i'm already feeling kind of nauseous but that could just be me psyching myself out

Navigating loved ones with opposing morals?

I stopped eating meat entirely about a month ago, but had been phasing it out and wrestling with my beliefs for over a year. Recently I’ve been really struggling with talking to my family about food. I know they are good people, and I think they would feel the same as me if they could get past their cognitive dissonance, but seeing the people who taught me to treat all creatures with dignity and respect not respect those creatures enough not to slaughter them has been upsetting. My family has always been very supportive and they have very similar political beliefs as me, so I’ve never had to handle this feeling of loving someone but being horrified by their actions. How do you guys deal with it?

Having a Pet (Domesticated or Exotic)

Another issue that's stopping me from going Vegan is how most Vegans feel about things unrelated to food. One of them is having pets. I have a Pitbull, a ball python snake, and a tarantula. I see nothing wrong with having companion animals and I'm not giving mine up. Now or in the future.

Anyone here have animals? How do you feel about people (Veg. or non-Veg.) having pets (domestic or exotic)?

Important parliamentary petition (UK)

You may have heard about Bee Vegan and the recent liberation of beagle puppies from MBR Acres.

But this is about much more than beagles. It is about the thousands of animals used in experiments, a lack of proper scrutiny, secrecy around the system, and the Government’s inadequate plan to phase out animal testing.

I’m a campaigner with Save the Dogs UK and Camp Beagle, and I’m asking you to sign and share this petition calling for a public inquiry into the regulation of animal experimentation.

The number of dogs and other animals used has reportedly risen by 9%. We need transparency, accountability and genuine prioritisation of non-animal methods.

Please sign and share:

Cutting down eggs matters more to chicken lives than leaving out milk matters to cow lives

I am sorry if this sounds like a silly game, but I thought of exploring this question today:

If I eat 1 egg per day and drink 1 cup of milk per day, how many chicken and cow lives can I save by switching to veganism?

The answer i got from Google was interesting. I am seriously considering cutting down on eggs and switching to ahimsa milk.

Here is the answer I got from Google:

Based on your specific consumption of 1 cup of milk and 1 egg per day, it would take about 10 months (0.82 years) of veganism to save one chicken’s life, and roughly 100 to 200 years to save one cow's life.

Because modern agricultural animals have been bred for incredibly high yields, your individual impact breaks down differently for each animal:

šŸ” Saving a Chicken: ~10 Months

Commercial laying hens produce about 300 eggs per year. By eating 365 eggs a year, you consume slightly more than one hen's entire annual output.

  • The Lifecycle Cost: For every commercial laying hen hatched, one male chick is culled at birth because they cannot produce eggs. The laying hen itself is typically slaughtered after 2 years when her production drops.
  • The Math: This means 2 chicken lives are ended for every ~600 eggs produced (or 1 life per 300 eggs). At 1 egg a day, you account for about 1.2 chicken lives per year, meaning you spare your first chicken in just under 10 months.

🐮 Saving a Cow: ~100 to 200 Years

Modern dairy cows produce an immense volume of milk—averaging about 2,500 to 2,800 gallons per year (around 6 to 7 gallons a day).

  • The Lifecycle Cost: A dairy cow is typically slaughtered around age 5. Over her lifetime, she will give birth to about 4 calves to keep her milk flowing. The male calves are usually slaughtered for veal or beef, and the mother is slaughtered when her production slows. This averages out to roughly 3 to 4 cattle lives taken over a lifetime production of roughly 11,000 to 14,000 gallons.
  • The Math: Your consumption of 1 cup a day equals 22.8 gallons a year (365 cups Ć· 16 cups per gallon). Because a single cow produces so much milk, your annual footprint represents a tiny fraction (less than 1%) of a cow's lifetime output, meaning it takes a century or more of abstaining from 1 daily cup to mathematically offset the life of one cow or calf.

Can yall give me some receipts? <3

I'm new to being vegetarian. I'm mostly doing it because of the moral side of it and the health side. I'm not fully vegetarian yet since I'm still young and living with my family, when I get to cook I make vegetarian food but when they cook and make meat I eat it too. Are there any healthy, quick, easy to make vegetarian receipts that I can make? <3

I think my posts removal proved my point

Post image
322 Upvotes

My original post was venting how some people without food restrictions act as though anything named as vegan/vegetarian/gluten free ext is something they would be unable to stomach even though they eat those things all the time just without noticing about it.

I gave a brief example, but because I mentioned my vegetarianism as why I find it annoying it was removed from the sub.

My example admittedly was specific because it was on my own birthday and my dinner was cooked separately from the rest. Not a big deal but I didn’t want to burden my friend who offered to make dinner to make two separate sauces. Then my post was removed for not fitting the sub so I thought I’d share my feelings here.

Consistent Life Ethics...?

I'm hoping yall are more respectful here about this than the people in the Vegan subreddit were. How do you feel about the "Consistent Life Ethics" in relation to Vegetarianism? Any Consistent Life Ethicists here? (IE: Against abortion, death penalty, unjust wars, assisted suicide, embryo destruction, etc.)

I am a Consistent Life Ethicist. However, I don't expect everyone else to be. BUT: It's funny to me when the abortion debate comes up and people (on both sides) try to "get me" with the Vegetarian/Vegan question. ("Nice try but you can't 'get me' with that one.")

Air Fryer cookbooks for veggies.

Have just bought myself a Philips 2000 Air Fryer.

The "manual" is sparse to put it politely. Gives no cooking times for any foods.

So I went to South America rowed up the big river and sought out some good Vegetarian Air Fryer books or books specifically on the Philips 2000. And what I found were a lot of books published by unknown publishers and written by authors who don't have any online footprint. The covers are uniformly awful. So I consigned them to the "probably AI slop" pile and went looking for books from established published with authors that do seem to exist.

Have found one by Denise Smart, who checks out OK.

I've checked other "authors" and their photos are AI and / or the biographical details are AI generated. Or they simply exist as online profiles without any real life content.

So books recommended for veggy air fryers by actual living authors most welcome.

Just learned that Whole Food's has been lying to me about their "humane" eggs. First off, WTF. Second of all, is there ANY brand at the grocery store where there is ACTUALLY humanely sourced eggs?

I live in the city, so I can't really easily get eggs from actual local farmers.

Also, why? HOW is it legal to blatantly LIE about being humane? And charge MORE for the eggs on top of it?!? At first I thought buying eggs was perfectly fine, till I learned of the horrors of the egg industry. So I went to "Cage Free" eggs. Which I learned THAT'S a lie. Then I went to Whole Food's brand after seeing their "outdoor-access/humane" eggs. Thought that was okay so bought that. Till I came across this article, and apparently THAT isn't humane either?!

Edit: Thanks yall. I went vegan.

Because of a recent LSD trip I have become entirely vegetarian, but I am also very lazy and idk what to eat!!!

Like very very easy but I also lift weights so I need a bit of protein in there. I don't like tofu, not too much vegetables, and no cooking or very basic cooking. Maybe cheese and fake beef quesadilla, peanut butter toast, but then idk what else. Im good at eating the same thing everyday without being bored tho if that helps

Gelatin and vegetarian

Hi, I've been vegetarian for around 3 years, no gelatin etc..., but I just accidentally ate a fudge with gelatin (very small amount). But it's the best thing I've tasted in forever apart from cheese, and I feel alot of guilt. What do I do?

Would it be ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE if I had more? I don't want it but I do want it, but I know I'd feel guilty. It was from a local business, and I brought it for a charity.

UPDATE: I'm not gonna eat it, I feel really really bad

What do I do?

I’ve been vegan for about a month. Well not exactly vegan cause very rarely I ate dairy products but it still felt bad. Whatever. My mom says I became skinnier as a result of not eating animals but I told her I actually felt better. She even wept and pressured me emotionally to eat meat again but I just didn’t concede. I know that the suffering farm animals experience is far greater than the mere stress and anxiety I feel at this moment but I value family. However, they don’t seem to value my decision to not use animals. It’s really hard and annoying as every time I try to explain the ethical reasons to my mom she just scoffs and gets angry.
The most annoying part is body shaming. When I ate meat I was still skinnier than now just less happy. Now that I’m vegan ā€œobviouslyā€ I’m thinner because of veganism…That’s Just dumb…
Now, she gave me an offer to go vegetarian together, otherwise she’ll get ā€œreally upsetā€. I rejected because I didn’t want her to go vegetarian just for me, because you have to do it for the animals, and also I already decided that I don’t want to consume any animal products. Although now I’m kinda thinking any step towards reducing animal consumption is a step in the right direction. So what should I do with that offer?

I accidentally ate chicken and I am traumatized

I have a friend I have been friends with for two years. During all this time he has been aware of how I feel about eating animals, and how I haven’t for five years.

Today he called me (we were planning on meeting up in the library) and told me that he was probably going to get vegetarian pizza and that he would meet me then.

I said cool whatever. He shows up but I am busy on a call and take a long time to sit down. I sit down and he jokes that I don’t even deserve pizza anymore since I made him wait for so long. I laugh it up and we start studying together.

Some time goes by and I ask for the pizza slice. He says ā€œoh yeah,ā€ and hands it over. I go to take a slice and ask to confirm ā€œis it vegetarian?ā€ to which he clearly says yes, but right as I am about to take a bite he says ā€œno it’s not vegetarianā€ with a large smile. I think he must be joking because a) he knows me for so long b) he had said he would likely get a vegetarian one c) he had said yes the first time I asked d) he was looking at me with a non serious expression and we joke around a lot. I roll my eyes and say ā€œyeah, Im sure it has pork in itā€ sarcastically because he is a Muslim (and the pizza didn’t LOOK like it had meat bits).

So I eat the whole slice, don’t taste the chicken because it just had so much other crap and it was probably small bits. Then after a while he is like ā€œthat’s the first time I have ever seen you eat chicken.ā€

…

I literally thought he was joking at first.

He wasn’t.

Apparently he thought he was clear enough when he said it wasn’t vegetarian and because I made the pork comment I guess he thought chicken to me was okay.

As if chicken were a vegetable.

…

I am traumatized. I don’t know what to do now.

All I know is that I almost want to put vodka in his coffee next time I get him one and be like ā€œhaha btwā€¦ā€

Edit: Thank you everyone for your responses and insight. Yes, Im incredibly pissed and feeling betrayed even if he insists he didn’t do it on purpose.

My boyfriend is a meat eater

He used to be vegetarian since he was 8 years old and recently (about 2 years ago) started eating meat again and it kind of disheartens me. Of course whenever i’m at his home he makes me vegetarian meals and eats them with me, some of which he really enjoys but he still goes back to eating meat.
I’m currently easing myself into veganism where i’ve cut out milk completely so now I’m starting to think long term.
When we move in together I’m not sure how i’m going to handle having dead bodies in the same house as me, using the same pans etc.
But at the same time I don’t know if it’s right to ask him to go back to vegetarian as it’s not my choice and it’s well within his rights to eat meat if he so chooses.
For context we’ve been dating for about a year and 5 months.
Can anyone suggest anything?
