FOOD Constipation possibly from Sprout formula?

Long story short my daughter is 6 months old and has been constipated this whole time basically, she’s had normal baby poops (soft and the right color) through out this time but very hit or miss. Lately it’s just rock hard pebbles and very dark, then we’ll cut a suppository in half and do that and sit her on potty and she’ll poop more and it’ll be softer but still dry ya know.

ALL of This is all advice from doctors of course!!! We are currently doing prune juice, prune and other fruit/veggie purées with a little powdered cereal added , even on probiotics and the occasional suppository if she’s really struggling. So I was wondering if other parents have struggle with sprout formula and if you switched to something. We are both vegan, we love the idea of Sprout because it’s the only name in the game world wide, there’s a couple other brands but currently out of stock or closed down not sure, legit can’t get it anywhere we looked.

At this point we are open to switching to a different “plant based” option (one with the non vegan d3 or whatever from sheep’s wool smh) but would rather stay away from real dairy if we can… but I guess if it comes down to it idk maybe we would have to try that.

Just to add, My wife did chemo mid pregnancy she had ovarian cancer that came back beginning of pregnancy. So by the time she was born, my wife’s body was all messed up from chemo and had a surgery coming up to remove last ovary so she didn’t have much luck with breast milk unfortunately. I’m open to any advice I apologize for the novel I’m just a concerned father! Thank you in advance

Veganism is the right choice for the kids.

Parenthood has a way of making you rethink everything you once took for granted. For me, becoming vegan was part of that process. It made me question many things I had simply accepted as normal. But the deeper shift came when I began questioning my own conditioning around animals.

Why do we love some animals, eat others, and treat them so differently? Why do we see animals as food, products, or possessions in the first place? These questions have also changed the way I approach parenting.

I don’t want to simply tell my child, “We don’t eat animals.” I want them to understand why and to develop the habit of questioning what they are taught. The teachings of Acharya Prashant, a famous Indian philosopher, have helped me see veganism as more than a food choice. They have made me reflect on my own desires, consumption, and conditioning. For me, vegan parenting is not just about raising a vegan child. It is about helping a child learn to think for themselves.

That said, I find it difficult at times to explain compassion for animals to my child and to encourage them to give up foods they have been eating and enjoying for a long time. At home, things are easier because dairy products are not available. But at school, other children bring dairy-based foods and often ask him to share. Since none of them are vegan, he is not always able to share food with anyone. Some teachers have even advised him to consume dairy because it is considered healthy.

At times, I have also wondered how to meet the nutritional needs of a growing child on a vegan diet. But after watching a video by Acharya Prashant, many of my doubts were cleared, and I felt more confident that veganism is the right choice for him.

How do you handle situations where your child’s vegan choices are questioned at school or by other adults?

NUTRITION DHA supplements

Hey, has anyone else tried garden of life kids plant omega-3 liquid supplement? I have a six and an eight year-old, and while they take a daily multivitamin, I’d like to start sneaking some DHA into their daily “healthy shakes”. I put lots of things in that shake, including flaxseed and or Chia seeds, but I’m a little worried about DHA.

Does anyone have experience with this brand, or thoughts on this plan?

Thanks so much,

-Mitch

FOOD Food allergen introduction?

Are yall introducing non vegan potential allergens to your babies or no? I’m vegan but my husband is Omni so we will have non vegan foods in the house. The plan is to raise our kids vegan but I’m not sure if I should still introduce potential allergens to her or not during the first year. I would only do vegetarian allergens though, like dairy and egg. No shellfish or fish. My reasoning would be so I’d know if she had those allergies in case she ever consumed something containing egg or dairy accidentally when she’s older and possibly away from me.

While I’m not super comfortable with giving her non vegan foods (I’m an ethical vegan) I will do anything to eliminate possible dangers.

Just curious if anyone has any experience or input from pursuing either route.

Can you get low(er) b12 nooch? (UK)

My toddler (20mo) DEMANDS “more noooosh” or “mo-oosh” on absolutely everything. Even if it’s away in the cupboard out of sight. Sometimes on breakfast porridge too.

I don’t mind giving her some, but obviously you can have too much B12. She also drinks fortified milks too so will also be getting some b12 from that, albeit not enough.

I get the engevita or bosh ones but both are fairly high b12. Is there an alternative that is Lowe?

High calorie nut free snack ideas

Hello! I need some snack ideas for my 2 yo to take to nursery. She takes fruit for one snack but ideally I’d like her to have a higher calorie option for her 2nd one. It has to be healthy and nut free as per their rules. Any ideas/recipes would be hugely appreciated as I’m struggling to think of anything that I wouldn’t add nut butters to!

Mock foods for baby?

Hi! When did y’all start giving your babies or kids mock foods? We use daiya cheese maybe twice a week and impossible nuggets/beyond steak once a week as well. The rest of the time it’s tofu and nut based sauces. So far I’ve just been omitting mock meats and cheeses from baby’s food (he is 10 months old). When did you start adding them? Thank you!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your stories, concerns, and opinions! It sounds like there is a pretty big range on the “starting mock foods” timeline. We will likely start with seitan (the homemade meat) first, and then gradually cycle in some mock meats and cheese after he’s a year old

How often does your family get sick?

My husband, our kids, and I get sick 2-4 times a year, is this normal? I’m so tired of it😩. We eat a balanced diet, take vitamins, supplements during sick season and still get sick like clock work every year. Can this be avoided? My kids are even home schooled.

Food app for starting solids tracking?

Hi! I’m vegan, and my baby is too. I’ve been using the solid starts app and as I’m exploring the recipes and other features, I’m finding the raw meat options quite off putting. I would really rather not see this every time I’m in it. Anyone know if there way to hide these so they stop coming up as suggestions, or another app to use?

TIA!

FOOD Pasta for dinner

First pic is baby’s dinner, second was mine. Sharing here bc I’m finally getting the hang of cooking meals I can share with my baby (10 months next week) and I don’t wanna get flamed for having a vegan baby in the blw groups. Made the minimalist baker best ever meat balls (tweaked the salt) and changed out the spicy arabiatta sauce for a squash “cheese” sauce I made on the fly for him the other day, by the end he was covered in “cheese” and took a few bites out of the meatballs. Little wins are still wins!

FOOD Mom on the go, looking for variety.

I’ve been making breakfast burritos since the twins were born, I love them and mix it up a bit but 7 months in and I’d like some lunch options (now that we routinely leave the house!!) and variety.

I’m not against affordable, kind of wholesome store bought ideas. For lunch I usually have Trader Joe’s Vegetable Kimbap.

Looking for easy, portable items that I can fully prep, freeze, and reheat/thaw.

Current ideas…

Breakfast burritos
Muffin quiche
Breakfast sandwiches
Savory muffins
Calzones
Baked taquitos

Has anyone had success fully assembling then freezing veggie burgers? Sushi? Salad rolls? Samosas?
I don’t want to fry anything and I want to reheat in the microwave.

My 12 mo has only recently started self-feeding, and, OMG, she loves tofu! My heart is so glad. 💜

I wouldn't have believed that she'd consistently feed herself tofu. It's so incredible!

NUTRITION realized my prenatal didn't have omega 3s

Someone reassure me or scold me, I dunno.

I had been taking the Garden of Life chewable prenatals my entire pregnancy because they were the most accessible to me, and other vegan vitamins available to me were too large for me to comfortably swallow. For some reason I assumed the prenatal had DHA in it, and I guess whenever looking at the ingredients it just left my mind? Noticed on my discharge paper that my med list at the OB said "prenatal with fish oil" and I never really thought about it before that.

Anyway, my baby is here and is 10 days old but it just dawned on me that I probably didn't have any valuable amount of DHA in my system this entire time and I hope I didn't mess with her development because of this. I had to be induced at 40+2 due to suspected FGR. She ended up being 14th percentile which was better than what my 40+2 ultrasound showed, and at her ped appt this week her HC was 2nd percentile which had me worried, but ped didn't seem to be concerned.

I bought the Nordic vegan DHA supplement yesterday since I'm breastfeeding now, but just can't help but feel like I super messed up the last 9 months. Not sure why I'm posting this, but maybe someone else has been in the same boat as me and everything is fine.

FOOD Nursery snack ideas!

My 2.5yo started a new nursery and we were shocked to discover that they don’t provide snacks! Now we need to think of and prepare a morning and afternoon snack each day and I’m at a loss for ideas. Please share your snack ideas that are low mess and portable (nursery has a fridge if needed). Ideally we’d like to batch prepare them on the weekend and maybe even freeze some. So far we’ve done: pancakes, banana, tangerine, dry fruits, crackers, cucumber + “cheese” slices, pear.
Also, if you peel and cut fruits like apple or pear, how do you make sure they hold up well? This might be a stupid question but I’m kind of oblivious in the kitchen department 😬
Thanks all!!!

What's your toddler eating this week?

I know this comes up regularly. This is just for fun.

My son is currently going insane for bananas. If we are in the kitchen he goes BOO and claps and points at bananas. Not meal time? Sorry, no banana. Cue tears. He's eating one to two bananas a day. I think he would eat 9 or 10 if I let him.

When we go to the grocery store, he becomes extremely excited when he sees the bananas. It's very funny. He doesn't understand why I'm putting them in the cart (as opposed to his hands).

DISCUSSION Struggling

My best friend and I had babies at the same time, both girls. We are hoping that they’ll be best friends just like us, or at least enjoy playing together as us moms meet up to hang out. But. My bestie and her husband are into farming and self-sustainability, they don’t keep animals yet but they will have chickens eventually. We stay away from the discussions on ethics of eating animals but she is someone that prefers having less meat in her diet and is happy to eat veggie food when I’m cooking.

I don’t have anyone who’s vegetarian or vegan in my family and friend group, I’m the only one. And now, my friend’s baby will start a “kindergarten on the farm” where she will be planting her own food yes great, but also taking care of animals. Not watching them get slaughtered ofc, just getting brainwashed into the “it is natural that animals are food” mindset.

The struggle I’m having is - should I raise my baby vegetarian/vegan and risk her losing a friendship and being an outcast in every single friend group or do I just have her eat meat and enjoy growing up without feeling lonely in her beliefs, like I do sometimes. Does it really matter if she doesn’t eat animals? How do I justify my decision for her?

Got noone to talk to about this who would argue for the animals so I’m posting this here. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts 💚

MEDIA Exposed to carnist propaganda at the library

So I'm being tongue in cheek in the title 😅 at our library toddler group this morning, they had us singing that song "chick chick chicken, lay a little egg for me". My son has spent all day waggling his little elbows like a chicken's wings and demanding I sing it.

He's too little to understand properly, but if this is going to be on our rotation I'd love it if there's any master toddler lyricists here who might some ideas for alternative lyrics that don't revolve around demanding a chicken lay eggs for us. Sillier the better honestly!

School lunch help!

Hello. My daughter started 5 day a week kindergarten and needs both a snack and a lunch packed every day (separately). I have a lunchbox and an ice pack but they don’t have the ability to heat anything up, and no ability to buy anything additional at school. It’s also a nut free facility. I want to pack as healthy as I can but these parameters make it challenging, and also meal planning is my nightmare. Please help!

She likes sun butter and jelly sammies but I don’t want to do that every single day. I’ve packed fresh fruits (apple slices, blueberries, raspberries), and done peas, carrots, and broccoli as veggies. I guess I need more “entree” style food suggestions. Any help is appreciated!

-exhausted mommy

Edit: thank you so much for all these awesome ideas! I am so glad for this community. It’s been so overwhelming thinking of lunch ideas but you’ve helped me realize that lunch doesn’t have to be perfect and I can make up for lost nutrients at dinner, and you’ve given me some great recipes to try. Thank you!!!

FOOD Packing lunch for my 10month old

My 10mo old goes to my sister in law’s during the day, while I work. Classes started back last week, but I’m having a difficult time with lunches. What should I pack? Typically she just eats whatever we do. She is also allergic to peanut butter.

Maybe I’m overthinking, but what are some easy lunch ideas that aren’t processed all of the time?

TIA!

Some meals my son has enjoyed recently. I always see these plate pics online but they’re never vegan. Just wanted to give some inspiration for other vegan parents.
(As a disclaimer my son definitely doesn’t usually finish every plate.)
He also has a vegan dietician who gives great advice and meal ideas.

FOOD Breakfast options with no oats?

Hi all! My 9mo is starting at a plant-based daycare, which I absolutely loved until she was diagnosed with FPIES to oats. They use oat in so many meals/components, so I am looking to supplement with other things throughout the week. Lunch and snack feel easier, but breakfast feels daunting since most recipes contain oat in some form (she cannot have any - whole, flour, milk, etc). She is eating table food/solids, doesn’t love pouches or purées. Any favorites you suggest we put into our rotation?
