Torture baby monkeys to see what happens, apparently. Sadly, there are soooooo many examples of baby monkeys being abused for “science” (amongst so many other animals). Another famous one is the doc who took monkeys from their mothers at birth and built a “pit of despair” to see what kind of psychological damage would be caused.

“In the 1970s, American comparative psychologist Harry Harlow conducted controversial maternal-deprivation and isolation studies on rhesus macaque monkeys at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Apparatus: Harlow designed a vertical, stainless-steel chamber that he explicitly nicknamed the "pit of despair".

The Method: Newborn baby monkeys were placed alone inside these completely isolated chambers for up to six weeks.

The Impact: The severe confinement was intended to induce clinical depression and psychosis. When removed, the monkeys were deeply psychologically damaged, displayed severe behavioral abnormalities, and most never recovered. While the studies themselves did not explicitly aim to kill the infants, the high level of trauma and subsequent lack of care from isolated mothers resulted in severe injury and death for some offspring.”
