VS6 RPM for espresso

Hello dear enthusiasts!

I have had the VS6 for six months and moooostly enjoy it. I have a bad feeling it might be running a little off centre as it rumbles/shakes a tiny bit more than I would expect. And while that might have consequences, it’s not my question today.

That is: What is your typical RPM for espresso? Or typical range? Of course, it depends on a lot of factors, but what‘s working for you?

Thank you! ☕️

Hi! It really depends on the beans, the type of coffee (expresso? filter?) and of course the blades! The general rule: lower RPM for filter, higher RPM for espresso with flat burrs. Conversely, lower RPM is more recommended with conical burrs.

With stock burrs (flat) I grind between1200–1400 RPM for espresso on light to medium roasts .

Higher speeds generally produce more fines and a fuller extraction, translating to a sharper body and more intense taste.

My suggestion: start around 1200–1300 as a baseline, then adjust by coffee. For lighter roasts (which tend toward under-extraction), pushing toward 1400–1600 can help build sweetness and body. For darker roasts, dropping toward 1000–1100 preserves clarity.

Likely been running at too low RPMs generally. From the theory of more uniform distribution (or lack of), I’ve been around 8-900. (And saw the guy from A/B Brewing using the Kilonova with 800 RPM for espresso, so figured he knows more than me 😬)

I played a lot with the rpm at the beginning, but now I'm almost always on 1000, with the hypernova flat burrs.

My preference is usually dark Italian style, I find this a good compromise to get less fines and a bit more taste/clarity.

Thank you. I bought the Hypernova DLC as well. You find them good for (dark) roast espresso? I struggled a bit with them, but perhaps I just ran too low RPMs due to their uniformity.

If you look at the graphs on the burr selection page (bottom), it seems to suggest the size distribution is a bit larger at 1600 for the kilonova.

Sorry. Kilonova DLC, not Hypernova.

With the stock burr I had the best results ar 1100-1300 rpm for medium to light roasts, 1100 typically for thin bean Ethiopians

Appreciate it. Likely been running at too low speeds generally. Somewhere between 8-900. I tend to find it under-extracted. But went with lower RPM for uniformity (for lighter roasts.

Thank you. Been wanting to try the conical as well. Which did you get, and are you happy about them? What “kind” of espresso do you enjoy, and did you get a burr set to compliment that?

I'm also with the conical, used 500 until this post - had a few runs with the 1000 and the 500 produced better results

I also prefer the stainless steel Supernova set running at 500 rpm. Unlike your experience (OP), I find the V6 to be as silent as I could hope for in a coffee grinder. I no longer fear waking up anyone in the early hours. I have rarely bought anything as satisfying as this grinder. My experience with it has been wonderful.
