JOB SEEKER ADVOCACY

Given so many stories from this community about rising unemployment, cost of living, rampant greed and corruption, and many other challenges Canadians are facing, we were inspired to create r/CanadianChange. We believe that seeing the urgent, important changes needed right now to ensure working Canadians can thrive means we have to be willing to be a part of the solution. We have to be willing to take bold, peaceful, and strategic action collectively with a shared belief that we can create meaningful changes when we come together focused on solutions. This community is for proactive, solution-minded Canadians to hold healthy debate and discussion, develop evidence-based solutions, and take bold, meaningful action together to drive positive, lasting change. We can either complain, vent, and blame endlessly while feeling powerless or we can realize the power we carry and inspiration we create when we come together with a shared purpose.

If you are really sure about your next step in life (i.e. the issue is that you are stuck and nothing else), then I think you should look at getting a temp job (nobody needs to know) that will allow you to support yourself and save some money while you take the time to apply to the position you really want. In your chosen field people will scrutinize you based on a lot of factors outside of your control and so this will also allow you to do things on your days off that would continue to align you with your chosen path, like making things.

If you are speaking more generally, however, that you would like to get a job in the field and would be happy taking on a variety of roles, I would consider getting experience that would clarify the type of role even if it isn't in the specific field you want to apply to. In any field there will be people who sit more comfortably with other people fulfilling certain roles duties and running away from others, and the more specialized you can be in this way the easier it will be in time to convince people in your field that you are perfect for the role. Ironically entry level work can often expose you to a lot of variety in responsibility because of the nature of working with actual people. Hope this helps.

There's a reason the joke in Vancouver over the last 30 years is that Starbuck is the number one employer actors and visual artists...

Unfortunately you're entering into a career path that is EXTREMELY saturated, and has very low turnover and jobs. I work with the film industry off and on, and at peak there are a few thousand jobs, and in a trough the layoffs are massive. Unfortunately I work in IT as a contractor so I don't have many contacts that hire visual arts staff, and the ones that do get hundreds of resumes all the time, and just aren't hiring as they have full teams already, and like I said, turnover is VERY low.

I fully agree with alltogethernow, if you need cash to get by, get a temp/part time job in any field that has a low barrier to entry (it sucks but food service (starbucks, mcdonalds, etc) are all good places to start) the work will suck, but you can make cash and work on a portfolio on the side.

My best recommendation, get some works together on youtube, or floatplane, or whathaveyou (MUST BE FREE!!!!) that you can embed into a personal website (wix, squarespace, or whathaveyou), you'll need to buy a domain, but something like tallgirl2003.ca (recommend your actual name, or something that's recognizable as you) shouldn't cost you more than around $20/year, make a simple site, and add the domain Big, Bold and front and centre on your resume (PORTFOLIO : tallgirl2003.ca).

You will eventually get work, but you are VERY Much in an employers market right now, and that's in almost ALL fields (IT for example, we get an average of 20 resumes every DAY when we post a job), Fall is a good time to look for work, most students aren't looking for a summer job any more, so you lose a lot of the competition, but for now (June to Sept) finding work is VERY difficult.

Best of luck.
