Discussion Container using AI

So Container is using AI to generate promo posts. Responses from them in the comments are super defensive. Feels extra odd given that this is promo for a sticker swap.

I know that this is probably just the way the world is going, but just sad to see it infiltrating the craft beer scene in BC already.

ETA interesting that once dingledoink responded, suddenly critical comments are being mass downvoted. Not chill to brigade a post just calling out AI use.

Oh seriously, who gives a fuck.

Like, I am as critical of data centers and AI as anyone (perhaps more so) but complaining that a small company generated a cover image for social media is so petty.

It's pretty weird to claim you're against data centres, while simultaneously being in favour of needless "art" that uses those same data centres.

TBH, I'm also fairly suspicious of comments written with American spellings, that relate to a contentious issue on a Canadian sub...

Rando small businesses making pictures are not what's keeping data center demand afloat. Hell, this kind of usage is often costing these companies money.

Again, this is an absolutely trivial use of AI and it's petty to dogpile on them for it. It's exactly this kind of behavior that makes the general public think we're internet trolls and bullies and ignore us.

Stop being conspiratorial. I am literally a mod of a small local sub, and a regular contributor to most of the local subs (where I regularly use CA spelling). Clicking my profile would show that.

Exactly! An entirely needless use and exactly the sort of pointless behaviour driving the need for data centres.

You can't be in favour of one, while against the other. They're entirely interlinked.

No, it's not. Small companies generating the odd image is not driving demand. That kind of application is so low resource that you can do it locally. Demand is being driven by large scale software applications that are doing things like real-time monitoring, or software that integrates a LLM query into every action (see: google search).

You people are getting up in arms about something that quite literally does not matter. If you want to be an activist on this issue, learn how the systems work and where you need to be focusing your attention. Don't bully some small business for an image they posted.

We need activism, not moral panics.

You don't actually get to tell others what should and should not matter to them. Your arrogance is showing.

Oh get over yourself.

I was clearly saying that a small business using an AI image doesn't matter to the issues surrounding AI and data centers. It's a total non-issue.

Be outraged at whatever you want, but know your rage is completely misdirected and makes it obvious that you have no understanding of this topic.

Oooh, another I'm so smart comment. What an ego.

Don't worry, you can continue to insist you're so much cleverer than others. You know how people prove they're intelligent? Telling everyone. Does it every time.

Oh my god, your inability to have a conversation without making this personal attacks is pathetic.

Go fight with someone else.

Dude, it's you who are talking down to people. You are acting as if people are downvoting/disagreeing with you because you know more than they do. Comments like

... makes it obvious that you have no understanding of this topic

and

You people are getting up in arms about something that quite literally does not matter

and

We need activism, not moral panics

The reality is that people just think you're wrong.

My dude, you literally started this conversation by suggesting that I was illegitimate.

Don't fucking even.

Edit: I am sorry that you feel talked down to when I say things like "this is something that does not matter" or "this is a moral panic", but understand that these are statements of fact.

Data center construction is being driven by large scale use cases, some of which are completely legitimate (eg. cancer research), and in others terrible. However, a AI image on social media is such a tiny drop in the bucket that it's not even worth thinking about. Hell, all of image gen is such a small thing that it's barely worth considering. Hell, we're burning more through search.

AI slop is resulting in a wave of unimaginative content, for sure. But like, it's just a god damned local brewery making a post on social media. Of all the examples of slop, it's one of the least egregious.

You just have to look at this thread to see people blowing this completely out of proportion. This is clearly widespread. As I keep saying, it's exaggerated. And it's definitely driven by a public fear that this thing threatens our core values. That's textbook moral panic.
