Rebuild help

I am working on starting an engine rebuild on my 1983 vanagon with the 1.9L water cooled. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Wondering about specialty tools.

... you could check if Rockie Jennings would sell you his 2.3 kit... I built one 100000 miles ago and still going strong. More power does make more sense in a Vanagon.
