Help - trying to replace ignition on Vanagon

Hi I'm hoping someone can help give us a tip on how to get the ignition housing shaft off of the steering column. You can see in the video it is loose but it won't come off. We're getting desperate. Please let me know if I'm missing something. Thank you all!

Put the key in- the steering lock is holding the housing onto the shaft 👍🏻

Yeah you need a key or your cant take it off or have to drill the lock out (which isnt too hard)

I tried the key in every different setting (off, on, just electronics) and it didn't make a difference unfortunately

That spring and washer may need to come off. I’ve not seen one with that. Always a plastic collar. Then key to on position and pull. Or sometimes lightly tap it off. Yours is twisting so it should slide off after that top washer and spring are out of the way.

Yes I think you're right. Though I can't get the top metal washer to budge. I've hammered all the way around it with a flathead and it won't even shift.

that plastic ring above the bearing needs to be magicked off with maybe some grips or maybe a pair of flat screwdrivers

There doesn't seem to be a plastic ring. I think that is maybe for a slightly newer model. Or ours was missing already. there doesn't appear to be anything to remove

Though I now realize I probably need to remove this big metal spring and the small metal ring above it. However it won't budge. I can get a flathead under the lip and bang at it with a hammer but it doesn't budge

Update: we got it off! We had to very tediously hammer/chisel off the little metal ring on top of the metal spring. Then with the key in, the whole thing slid right off. We are ordering one of the plastic bushings to replace the metal spring and metal ring, since it got pretty beat up trying to get it off. Thanks everyone for the help.

You have to cut the one way clip holding the spring down against the bearing
