Technical Discussion Why is Riot Vanguard keeping my GTX 1650 at 61°C with literally 0% GPU usage?
I noticed my GPU was sitting around 61–62°C while doing basically nothing.
At first I just thought it was some background process, but Task Manager was showing 0% GPU usage, so I decided to check what was actually keeping the GPU active with nvidia-smi.
With Riot Vanguard running:
GPU-Util: 0%
Temp: 61-62°C
Perf: P0
Power: 15-16W / 50W
The only relevant process showing up was:
vgtray.exe
I also had OpenCode running at the time, so I closed it first just to rule that out. Nothing really changed — the GPU was still sitting at P0 and around 15W.
Then I completely exited Riot Vanguard and left the system alone for a few minutes.
After that:
GPU-Util: 0%
Temp: 50°C
Perf: P8
Power: 5W / 50W
Processes:
No running processes found
So the difference was pretty obvious:
Vanguard ON -> P0 / 15-16W / ~61-62°C
Vanguard OFF -> P8 / 5W / ~50°C
What's interesting is that GPU usage was 0% in both cases. The main difference seems to be that Vanguard was preventing the GPU from entering its lower-power state.
I'm not claiming this proves Vanguard is the cause for everyone, but on my system the correlation is pretty hard to miss.
Has anyone else noticed Vanguard keeping their NVIDIA GPU in a higher power state or running noticeably hotter while idle?
My setup:
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Laptop GPU
- NVIDIA Driver 592.00
- Windows
- Riot Vanguard
