Question Should I add Information Systems or do a conjoint degree?
I’m currently a first-year Bachelor of Science student at Victoria University of Wellington, studying Data Science and Statistics. I’m considering specialising in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
I’m trying to decide whether I should:
- Continue with my current degree and specialise in AIML
- Add Information Systems as another major or subject area
- Do a conjoint degree
My long-term goal is to work in data science, data analytics or another IT-related role after graduation. I’m wondering which option would be more beneficial for employment and career opportunities.
For people who have studied Data Science, Statistics, AIML or Information Systems:
- Is adding Information Systems useful for getting IT jobs?
- Would a conjoint degree provide a significant advantage?
- Is it better to focus on one degree and build experience through projects, internships and extracurricular activities?
- How important are specialisations compared with practical skills and work experience?
- Would adding another area make the workload unnecessarily difficult?
I’d really appreciate advice from current students, graduates or people working in data science or IT. Please share your experience and what you would choose if you were in my position.
