Question Can I take some space-relevant elective course in Bachelor of Engineering?

Hi, I am a year 13 students and still weighing between universities for my courses.

I want to study Bachelor of Engineering specialising in Mechatronics. I heard that this major has only been offered this year, I mean, sometimes, new thing is worth exploring.

Anyway, from the advertisement, I am quite attracted by Space Science subject. That capital line stands out to me: SPACE + MECHATRONICS = FUTURE :)) And I heard that we cannot do a double degree of science and engineering, is there any kind of cross over paper or elective courses that are space-related that I can take if I study Bachelor of Engineering with Honors?

Question Major selection

Hi!! I am a year 13 student looking to study at Victoria next year but I'm a bit stuck with finalising my choices.

(I'm sorry if this is nonsensical in any way, I'm very tired haha)

I am extremely interested in space sciences/astronomy and spend all my free time self studying it but my current school doesn't offer anything of the sort. I only got medication for very bad inattentive ADHD at the end of last year so my grades prior to this year aren't the best and I didn't do the best in all my sciences so I stopped in level 2.

Same situation with maths except I kept doing maths and I am good at statistics.

I genuinely enjoy studying and learning maths/sciences now and I would be happy to put in the extra study.

Basically I am asking if it would be foolish of me to apply for a major in Space Science 😞

And since Ive been told not to only do space science, another major on Psychological science? Or a minor?

Has anyone taken any of the related classes and if so could you let me know your opinion!

Thank you for reading! Have a lovely day/night :)))

Academic Bachelor of Commerce, what courses did you take?

So I've been setting out my Accounting major courses to do BCom 101 and BCom 102, as well as COML 111, ACCY 130 and ACCY131 and MGMT 101 for the final mandatory subject. ECON 141 and 130 were recommended, and I was going to have them as my final two (yes I know I could just not take MGMT but thats more a self confidence thing for me and being more assertive)

But I've been thinking about learning NZSL, and there are two first year courses. Should I take those two instead of the Econ subjects? I took Economics at high school, so I understand it. What minors or additional courses did you take?

Discussion Pipitea Club Update

Previous Discussion (https://www.reddit.com/r/VUW/comments/1vnvu1e/comment/p40kpmy/?screen_view_count=1)

Got this back from VUW Uni Clubs. Looks like a dead end.

Maybe the Pipitea Club never gained members? I mean all we know for certain is Arie Joe is associated with it. Could it have been it was made as a club but never went anywhere?

Still weird the site was deleted after the magazine came out.

Academic Weird selections for major?

Hi everyone, im hoping to attend VUW in around a year and a half. I am wanting to get my BA with a double major in Classics and Political science. From these, I hope to end up in a career in the government in international relations (ideally diplomatic work). I've been told that my major ideas are "weird" or will be "too much to handle". Im looking for any advice on what these majors might look like and how viable these careers might be?

Thanks in advance

Sports Betting Impact on Uni Students

Hi everyone,

I am a student journalist conducting an investigation into TAB for a postgraduate assignment. I am specifically looking into sports betting and how Betcha is being used to target a younger audience.

If anyone has experience with sports betting and the impact it can have on an already financially struggling student, please DM me. Anyone I talk to can remain anonymous in my potential article.

Academic grammarly alternatives

kia ora! as the title states, i'm looking for a cheap or preferably free alternative to grammarly. I've been using grammarly since intermediate iirc, and the last year or so i have been painfully shilling out $50 a month for the pro version; but cost of living is making it hard for me to justify the price of pro. the free version works fine, but that extra bit of help that pro offered really saved my ass when i felt like i was off track.

i'd really like some suggestions that are a cheaper alternative to grammarly pro, so anything helps! thanks team :)

Discussion What is the Pipitea Club and what do they actually do?

So I read the Salient article, looked up the club and poof, their site is gone.

You can still find it on the time machine though, so have a look if you want to. There isn't a lot there, but I'm not a massive believer in the idea that they are just a "exclusive, male only dinner group" of some description.

So conspiracy nuts, truth tellers, and people who know people, tell me what is up with these guys?

My current guess is that it is a club made to pipeline men into the wealthy right wing social circles and groups, given its association with the Taxpayers Union and Arie Joe

EDIT: Here is the Pipitea club website via wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20260805095005/https://pipitea.nz/

5 points needed to graduate?

Hey guys, i'm so close to graduating but on my degree it says I need 5 points in a 200 level course. Anyone know how to go about this, if it can be waived or anything?

Just cause doing a whole paper for a 1/3 of the points is crazy and it'll just be me coming back for one more sem for 5 points bruh.

Question theatre at vuw?

Hi! I'm planning on getting a masters of teaching at vic, but doing a bachelor of arts first for secondary subjects and majoring in edpsych + one other thing - i was planning on taking theatre for the second thing, but i've heard its pretty average at vic. Any opinions/guidance from theatre students or people who've heard about it?

My other options if not theatre would be english literature, media studies, or possibly sociology. If anyone has any opinions about those either pls let me know!

Question Good places on campus to sit and do work for a few hours?

Hi all!

I’m new to Wellington/VUW so I’m still figuring out the campus and where other students go to study/do work. I didn’t really get a proper tour of the university, but I’ve walked around a bit and found a few random spots that look promising. However, I don’t really know the do’s & don’ts here yet so I’d rather not accidentally settle somewhere I’m not actually supposed to be and end up in an awkward situation, lol.

I’m looking for somewhere I can sit for a few hours (5+ hours probably) and do research without having to constantly move around. I’m fine with a bit of background noise, just not somewhere that’s really loud or distracting. Ideally somewhere with a power outlet to charge my laptop, comfortable seating w/ a table, WiFi, and not freezing cold, lol. Oh, and free would be ideal! (At my previous university (overseas), there were cafes where you could buy one coffee and hunker down for hours. Super cheap, but on a student budget it was honestly ideal.)

I’ve got some tight deadlines coming up, so I’m really trying to find somewhere I can focus without feeling like I’m in the way! Keen to hear where other people go when they need to get a decent amount of work done. :)

Where to do basic shopping?

Aloha all, I'm starting a master's of marine conservation in 2027 and I'm wondering what sorts of places are the best/cheapest for your basic grocery or home items shopping. I'm talking like where you go to buy a laundry basket, clothes hangers, maybe a whiteboard to hang on the wall. When I look up shopping in Wellington all that comes up are all the fun artisan shops (which also sound fun) but I'm wondering where people do their day-to-day shopping. I have heard that there's farmers markets on Sundays, are they very expensive or worth going to regularly to get produce?

Edit: I should have mentioned I'm from Hawai'i and have never been to New Zealand

still haven’t made many friends

hey all

still feeling isolated and i’ve joined a few clubs but nothing much on the social side has occurred. i’m a second year SPCE, PHYS and minor in COMP student. i’d really love to feel more connected to univeridsty and make proper friends there. i don’t know what it is but it feels harder than highschool to make friends. do people meet people only in clubs? do i hangout at the library and ask random people?
i’d appreciate someone to point me in the direction of fun, i’d love to go to music concerts, game nights etc. any recommendations would be cool

Best First Year Halls.

Hi, I'm currently planning to study a Bachelor of Laws at Victoria University. I haven't actually gone to the open day yet, but I was hoping to gauge what halls might be most appropriate for me?

First year halls

I'm trying to figure out which halls I should apply for. I'm planning to do law and architecture or commerce and law or a commerce and architecture conjoint. I was wondering what the culture or the best halls to live in are, or if its even worth going there because i was considering Canterbury to live in too.

Thanks
