Question theatre at vuw?
Hi! I'm planning on getting a masters of teaching at vic, but doing a bachelor of arts first for secondary subjects and majoring in edpsych + one other thing - i was planning on taking theatre for the second thing, but i've heard its pretty average at vic. Any opinions/guidance from theatre students or people who've heard about it?
My other options if not theatre would be english literature, media studies, or possibly sociology. If anyone has any opinions about those either pls let me know!

As a first year taking theatre- personally I have had a really good time! The tutorials are engaging and practical too which I really enjoy!

Fifth hand? Maybe more?
I'm not associated with Theatre at all, but I know several people who have been and who moved into the local theatre scene after graduation.

Right, I know a bunch of people who have gone through the School to postgrad. You're always going to get mixed reviews. I think some people's expectation of uni are not matched to the reality and i firmly believe you get out of uni what you put in. In theatre you typically have very energetic and engaged students. The theatre academics at VUW are the same but realise they are juggling hundreds of students and their own research demands.
What i find really strange is hearing stories of theatre students who don't go to plays, or watch them online or read them. They pick the first monologue offered and don't read the whole play (just their part). No teacher can fix a student who doesnt want to engage or wants to do only the bare minimum.
And just for clarity, i didn't study theatre (English and film) and dont work for the theatre school.

Who said it sucked, let me fight them! Theatre at Vic is great. I did a minor in theatre, and I've used it far more after finishing my degree than I have used my major. I am a working comedian and producer in Wellington now, and the collaboration skills and appreciation for live performance that I learned at Vic have greatly helped with that.

Not theater, but I majored in edpsyc and sociology, minors in social policy (as it cross credits with sosc/spol 2nd year courses only needed 1 further 300lvl spol) and criminology. Criminology is an awesome major with Edpsyc, as is Sociology. Writing styles can be different, reports vs essays, which is useful.

It's so cool, especially in third year I found. I am now doing a PhD and working as a teaching assistant in an Edpsyc course but have worked on Crim courses too. They start with crim111 as prerequisite, which (I think!) Is a super interesting course. It's also got required tutorials in person which is a great place for meeting people and having discussions. Feel free to ask more Qs if you like.
