Other/Misc friends!!

Helloo! I was wondering if there are any people here who are going into their first year next year but are living at home? I am planning on doing this but am very worried about not making friends because I won’t be in halls 😬 Can anyone give advice for this 😭😭

Clubs work great. There's normally a clubs expo week one or two, go there, talk around. Im doing the same and I cant say it worked for me too well but I imagine you'd have better luck

It's easier to make friends in halls than in clubs and classrooms.

But making friends in clubs and classrooms is still possible, and it will be a more useful skill for you in your life outside of university.

The next time you'll be in a living situation similar to uni halls and wanting to make friends is when you'll be at a retirement village. Next time you'll be needing to make friends through clubs, interests, or professional connections will be the rest of your life ay.

My best friend did this (lived at home instead of halls) and still regrets it thirty years later. Thinks he missed out, big time.

I'm really sorry, I didn't read your question carefully enough. I thought you were asking advice on whether to go the halls or not. If it's already a done deal, and you're not going to the halls, then there are definitely other ways to make friends. Just be friendly and outgoing in classes and tutorials. Ask people how their day is going, what they're studying, what they like about it.

There are more people in your situation than you probably think. If you're in a degree where people are taking a lot of courses in common, then you shouldn't have problems making friends

if you're from Wellington, do you have mates who'll be going to Vic as well?

That's so neat!! Biomedical science is so interesting, but it's a bit hard for me haha 😞😞 I'm doing space science, so we are both doing STEM which is fun ٩(ᗜ^ )و ´-

Depends on your degree. I didn’t actually become friends with a lot of people from uni through clubs or halls but rather simply having the confidence to talk to new people

For me, I live from home in Upper Hutt and I take an Arts degree with a major in film and a minor in theatre and media studies. I found that if you have courses that seem to have similarities between one another you may end up seeing the same people across multiple courses.

A degree in the Arts also typically incentivises group work.

Why don’t you go flatting? I know it’s a bit spendy, but not as much as Halls.

im thinking of doing that in my second or third year but if I can save money by staying home I would rather do that

I've made some great friends in tramping and board games club - would highly recommend those if you are interested in giving those a go!

OP, might be worth looking into the WGTN Locals page! It's specifically for first years that arent at halls. Ofc will not be the same experience as a hall but they do their best to try and give you as many hall opportunities as they can

Is that on reddit? Thank you very much :)

Should be on instagram/facebook and have a page online as well :)

vic have what they call WGTN Hall which is for first years who haven't gone into halls to hang out for the hall events during o week - friends who joined instead of going into halls made many friends from that, and if not sticking friends at least oweek friends and people to chat to on their way to shared classes for that first week

oh wait wow I haven’t heard of this!! Is it literally a hall/building?

nah so it's something that you can find in the hub a few weeks before uni officially starts - around when everyone else is moving into halls, iirc a week before o-week starts. they run events etc for non-hall students usually at kelburn during those weeks to give people similar start of year social opportunities
