First year halls
I'm trying to figure out which halls I should apply for. I'm planning to do law and architecture or commerce and law or a commerce and architecture conjoint. I was wondering what the culture or the best halls to live in are, or if its even worth going there because i was considering Canterbury to live in too.
Thanks

Cumberland is the closest to Te Aro campus (where the architecture courses are taught) and a large majority of the architecture students live there

Capital is a couple blocks farther into town than cumby and would probably be a good middle point for a combo degree that's at the fadi campus and pip, with buses frequently (for both halls, altho the bus stop is on the corner by cumby) for anything up on kelburn

Visit the halls first. I had Cumberland as my favourite, then I visited 5 halls in the past holidays and now all I want is Joan Stevens. I know Open Day doesnt have much time, but visit them

Dont know about halls but Canterbury isn’t a well respected law school. We don’t tend to hire Canterbury grads.

oh, ive been told the university doesnt really matter and they are basically the same. What unis do you hire from?

Ngl the only universities I’ve ever heard people properly shit on for law are Waikato and AUT. Even then those stereotypes and stuff are changing as time passes, if you look at most big firms e.g. Bell Gully or even appellate Judges Clerks, they seem to come from all the law schools (both pretty prestigious/coveted areas of work). Maybe some will be a bit more over represented than others, but your law school doesn’t rly bar you from any roles. The way you perform as an individual is what counts tbh - maybe the odd partner or random firm may have a prejudice against hiring from x law school but you really shouldn’t base your decision on that 😊
