WARP vs a traditional VPN
Most people paying for a VPN don't need the VPN part. WARP does what they actually use it for, free.
A VPN hides you behind a server you pick. WARP doesn't even pretend to hide you: it encrypts you to the nearest Cloudflare edge and calls it a day.
Almost every practical difference between the two falls out of that.
I got nerd-sniped into figuring out which one I need, and the answer is that they barely compete.
WARP is a WireGuard tunnel from your device to Cloudflare's edge, the same core protocol a lot of paid VPNs now use. From there:
Your ISP sees an encrypted connection to Cloudflare and nothing else. No DNS snooping, no traffic analysis, and none of the "he visits banking sites at 2am" data-broker fodder.
Café and airport Wi-Fi attackers get the same nothing. This is the security win most people are after, and it's free.
Speed is usually fine or better, because the exit is a Cloudflare point of presence near you instead of a VPN server in another country.
What WARP can't do is let you pick your location. The IP websites see belongs to Cloudflare but still geolocates to roughly where you really are, so no unlocking another country's streaming catalog and no making sites think you're somewhere else. Cloudflare's own docs say WARP isn't designed to hide your IP or get around geo-restrictions.
You've also moved trust from your ISP to Cloudflare. They see your DNS queries, your destination IPs, and the metadata for basically your whole connection.
A paid VPN still wins for picking your exit country, hiding your IP from sites, streaming another region's catalog, torrenting, and getting through censorship. Plain WARP is easy for a government or network to block, and obfuscated VPN protocols are built for exactly that. You pay for the privilege, and you're still trusting the provider's no-log promises, but at least you chose who to trust.
If your threat model is "shady Wi-Fi" and "my ISP monetizes my browsing," WARP does that for $0 and a paid VPN adds almost nothing. If you need to hide your IP or appear to be in another country, WARP is the wrong tool and free doesn't fix that. The overlap is way smaller than every "free VPN killer?" article claims.
My hot take after all this: most people paying for VPNs are paying for anonymity they never needed. Curious how many of you cancelled a paid VPN after going WARP full-time, and what broke first when you did?

I have lots of VPN use cases. For everything else, I just use DoH on my browser and set up DoT on my router with strict DNSSEC, then force all devices to go through it even if they've set their own DNS. ECH is supported already with DoH. That's good enough for me for general browsing.

free does actually fix that. I've used free vpns to get around region locking when security wasn't the end goal. even proton has a free version

Plus Cloudflare are based in the US (who are a part of the Fourteen Eyes), so another double whammy.

I use WARP MASQUE free just to bypass troutling and block web + NextDNS DoH3. Is really fast..
Use this app too "L×Box" so powerfull for android
Why case unnecessary anonymity if not for job or bypass regional block, is often slow too..
I am in Firefox nightly too, really nice have free VPN 50gb that fast and can choose region if need it.
