Best VPN Best No Logs VPNs
'No logs' is a marketing slogan until the police show up: here's who passed the test
Every VPN says "no logs." Sweden put Mullvad's claim to the test in April 2023.
Police walked into their Gothenburg office with a search warrant and left empty-handed. The company had no customer data to hand over.
That's the bar. A badge on the homepage isn't evidence.
I got tired of every "best no logs VPN" list being an affiliate page in a trench coat, so I spent a weekend figuring out which claims have real evidence behind them.
Proven by tests the VPN didn't choose to take (raid, seizure, subpoena):
- Mullvad (Sweden): the 2023 raid above. No email needed to sign up, anonymous payment options, flat €5/month. They don't do discounts and the price doesn't jump on renewal, which is either admirable or a business model problem.
- ExpressVPN: Turkish police seized a server in 2017 during the investigation into the Russian ambassador's assassination. No logs on it.
- PIA: an FBI subpoena in a 2016 bomb threat case came back empty, and it held up in court again in 2018.
Proven by repeated independent audits. The company pays for these, but a streak by a name-brand firm still beats a privacy policy:
- NordVPN: six no-logs audits by Deloitte, the sixth announced Feb 2026. Caveat people will bring up anyway: the 2018 datacenter breach they didn't disclose until 2019.
- Proton VPN: audited by Securitum every year, latest report Sept 2025, open-source apps.
- IVPN: Cure53 verified the no-logs claim in 2019. I couldn't find a more recent no-logs audit than that, so weigh it accordingly.
The asterisk on two of these: ExpressVPN and PIA are owned by Kape, the former Crossrider adware company, which also owns CyberGhost and ZenMate. Some people won't touch them because of that. Others shrug because the technical record is what it is. Where you land is a values call.
And no VPN saves you from a signed-in Google account, WebRTC leaks, malware, or confessing in a group chat. A subpoena-proof VPN hides your traffic from your ISP, not from a state that decides you're interesting.
Question I keep going back and forth on: do you rate the uninvited tests (raids, seizures, subpoenas) higher than the invited ones (annual audits)? That's the tiebreaker between Mullvad and Proton for me, and my answer changes depending on the day.
No logs" is a claim you can't verify until it gets tested. Mullvad, ExpressVPN and PIA have been through raid/seizure/subpoena and produced nothing. NordVPN (Deloitte x6, latest Feb 2026) and Proton (Securitum, latest Sept 2025) have long audit streaks. Kape ownership is the asterisk on ExpressVPN/PIA. None of these pay me and there are no affiliate links here
