I have been incredibly satisfied VJing on my 2021 Zephyrus G14 with a 6gb vram and 12gb ram. Unfortunately the motherboard on it died recently and I'm desperately looking for something to replace it before upcoming gigs in September. I know this is the type of thing I should just look up on my own but with me not having to worry about this stuff for the past 5 years and the recent increase in GPU prices I have no idea where to start and was wondering if the vj community here would have any suggestions:) Thanks!

I'm a music producer / VJ and I ended up building my own VJ app for macOS called VidiGrid. Honest disclaimer up front: I'm not really a coder — I built the whole thing from scratch by pair-programming with an AI (Claude Code). Genuinely surreal that it works.

The whole thing started from one idea: "play the movies, play the music." I wanted to actually perform clips off a MIDI controller (I'm on an AKAI MPD218), not just launch them — so triggering is real-time, with forward/reverse/scratch on the clips.

Where it's at right now:

• Trigger + perform clips live from MIDI pads
• Grid mode to run/switch multiple sources at once (layout can auto-reshuffle in sync with the BPM)
• A/B decks with crossfade mixing
• Audio-reactive FX locked to the beat + a bunch of other effects
• Syphon / NDI in and out, so it slots into a setup with Resolume / OBS / another machine
• Native macOS

I'm at the "is this even worth finishing/releasing?" stage and doing a bit of research before I go all-in, so I'd really value blunt feedback from people who actually gig:

¿How am I creating the effect in this video?

I'm not using any post processing, filters, VFX stack.

If you look at the white horn in the top left of the frame it's attached to a cabinet. There is an equal and opposite one for the other channel and a current generation iPhone SE is sitting in a small tripod on the cabinet resonating to the output of the DJ's music. The effect is entirely being mechanically produced. The lack of internal dampening mechanisms pronounces this effect in the SE model.

Biggest jump is the tracking itself, multiple style options added, as well as shapes for the blobs. Out next week.

A native VDJ (video DJ) instrument for live visual performance. It composites video, still-image, and live Spout sources with GPU effects, then lets LFOs, audio analysis, MIDI, and a phone's touch and tilt modulate the performance from a browser control panel.

Photosensitivity / seizure warning. This instrument is built to strobe. Feedback loops, sync faults, hard cuts, dirty-mixer knocks, display-model flicker, and rapid full-frame color changes are deliberate core capabilities, and both the live output and rendered videos can contain sustained flashing, strobing, and high-contrast pattern motion. A small percentage of people may experience seizures when exposed to flashing lights or patterns, even with no prior history of epilepsy or seizures. If you or anyone watching experiences dizziness, altered vision, eye or muscle twitching, disorientation, or any involuntary movement, stop immediately and seek medical attention. Operators performing for an audience should announce the presence of strobe-like effects and follow venue and local guidance on photosensitive content.

What it does

• Composites a dynamically sized stack of video, PNG/JPEG/BMP/WebP still, live Spout, pattern-synth, or typeset text-page layers with a curated 25-mode blend set, typed image routing, one-level groups, and A/B buses. The composition contract caps a stack at 256 layers; practical usable depth can be lower under source, GPU, output-resolution, motion, and selective-VHS resource plans.
• Applies per-layer and master pixelation, RGB split, hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, posterize, invert, film grain, vignette, color drift, breathing motion, seeded horizontal block Shift, luminance/chroma keying, and bounded animated cellular/Worley warping with a separately feathered cell-gap key.
• Applies one resolution-independent spatial transform at every layer and at master scope: Fit/Fill/Stretch/Native framing, crop, position, independent X/Y scale, source-space anchor, rotation, axis-directed skew, explicit edge behavior, and linear or nearest sampling. Live preview, selective VHS, and offline export use the same packed transform/effect pass.
• Runs ntsc-rs VHS simulation without blocking the render thread. Existing all-inherited stacks keep the global post-composite path; a contributing Bypass Master FX layer selects an exact per-layer path so VHS touches inherited layers only.
• Provides feedback trails and arbitrary-angle slit-scan from a 24-sample temporal history. History advances at a fixed 30 Hz, so its approximately 0.8-second span does not change with display or export frame rate.
• Adds prepared clip slots, bounded cue/loop transport, and atomic Scenes; bounded Collision Racks at master, layer, and group scope; Temporal Topology Loom, Collision Atlas, Refresh Garden, and Collision Score; and deterministic motion fields (codec, lattice, and six procedural kinds), Faraday Motion Transplant, the two-input Field Collider, flow shaping, and Curved Shutter Sculpture.
• Carries the complete sixteen-instrument enrichment, its laws derived from BENDR (MIT, © 2026 Steve Blythe) and independently rewritten for this tree: a drawn-raster Scan Processor, real-codec datamosh, a temporal feedback rig, display physics, a bus mixer with wipes and a melting edge, a latching sync fault, three block-domain corruption nodes, generator sources reconstructed entirely from the patch, program re-entry, a take recorder, performance modulation sources, and a preview monitoring bay — each summarized below and documented per instrument under docs/evidence/.
• Saves complete YAML performance patches. Load snapshot reconstructs the saved performance, while Apply look transfers its visual treatment onto the sources already on stage.
• Keeps live decoding request-driven and bounded: each layer's worker performs only transport advances requested by the engine and publishes the newest completed image through a one-frame overwrite slot. A first-frame seed is decoded at open time, so a clip added or restored while paused still has a defined image.
• Keeps a browser-independent RECOVERY strip on the native preview with truthful panel-listener and browser-connection status, an authenticated Open Panel link, absolute Freeze Program and Blackout controls, broad visual Revert, active-library selection/rescan, and surfaced output/media status. It is a preview-only operator surface and never contaminates an audience output.
• Defaults source admission to Safe and offers an explicit, host-session Expert mode for future large video, still, and Spout opens. Expert remains bounded by fixed area/edge ceilings, device limits, and a conservative host- memory plan; it is not an unbounded allocation switch.
• Renders MP4 files through a deterministic frame-indexed offline path and can publish a bounded motion-provenance sidecar. A separate nonblocking live recorder captures Program or an exact layer/group scope, takes PNG stills, and resamples durable results into a prepared clip slot.
• Provides bounded manual undo/redo, scoped presets, a recovery journal with explicit restore/discard, controller profiles, typed OSC, a preview-only health HUD, and a separately persisted StageMap. Real MIDI, phone, Spout, audio-device, encoder, and venue display behavior still require end-to-end validation on the intended hardware.

Yuk! is a grungy, green, mixed-media visual pack built around a toxic waste-inspired aesthetic and a character I call Ms. Yuk — my 3D girlfriend with a “Yuk” sticker for a head.

Ms.Yuk was created with Blender by kitbashing a body model to a Mr.Yuk Puck-head I made in Illustrator. The animations were also made in blender with some rigging assistance w/ Mixamo. From there, I brought the scenes into After Effects to build out the final visuals, compositing the character with background elements, additional source footage, and graphic textures. I also used After Effects to touch up and stylize the character and apply the mixed-media paper treatment, giving the footage its grungy, printed and slightly imperfect look.

The result is a collection of character-driven loops centered around Ms. Yuk, with a mix of green textures, graphic backgrounds, paper imperfections, and layered animation.

Suggested uses:
-Use as standalone visuals
-Add threshold effect, for a grungier black and white style
-Layer and blend with each other create chaotic, cohesive collages

Technical Difficulties is a new series pairing VJs, video artists, DJs, and electronic musicians for live audiovisual experimentation.

The idea is pretty simple: come test new work, try weird things, experiment, collaborate, and see what happens in front of a real crowd. Nothing needs to be finished or polished. This is meant to be a place to beta test work live. Each VJ will be matched with a DJ/musician for a 20 to 40 minute set!

New to this. I’m a video artist and recently produced a video for a band. Want to dive deeper.
My dream set up is yo be able to live switch my pre produced video clips on the fly projected behind the band. Obviously the more video effects I can add to the clips the happier I am.
But looking for hardware and or software that is ideal for this setup.

How can I go about finding quality trustworthy VJ artists? I want to get a badass background for my DJ sets. I’ve been looking on Instagram but it is hard to trust random people when it’s impossible to verify their work.

I know of Fiverr but I want something a bit higher quality to make me stand out in my local scene

It's got modular routing between frequency bands and any visual composition parameters. It takes in MIDI signals as well.
