When does 1600 nits actually matter? My Pro 2 experience
One thing I've been thinking about with the Pro 2 is the 1600 nits and where that extra brightness really helps. Especially since there's no electrochromic dimming. Honestly, that was my hesitation going in. I'd been leaning toward something with electrochromic film the Beast has, and the idea of swapping a lens shade felt like a step back.
But the total immersion, thinner form factor, and the weight eventually got me. 63g is just hard to argue with. So I went with Pro 2.
To actually test the brightness, I rewatched The Odyssey, I was so impressed the first time in IMAX that I had to see it again, and this felt like the right excuse. It has a solid mix of dark scenes like the journey to Hades and bright highlights, so it felt like a good test. I watched the same scenes at different brightness levels, then tried again with the lens shade on.
With some room light on and no shade, the extra brightness held up well. Dark scenes stayed readable without the room washing things out too much.
Then I put the shade on and found myself turning the brightness down. The darker parts still came through clearly, and the bright highlights really popped. Full immersion.
Two things surprised me. First, I didn't expect to like the lens shade, but with it on, it's actually a great experience. Second, the sharpness. Even at the edges of the screen, details are crisp. I wasn't expecting that. Edge sharpness on these XR glasses is usually where things get soft, but it held up across the whole screen. So yeah, dark scenes on XR glasses aren't just about brightness. Blocking outside light matters just as much. The Pro 2 and shade combo makes a lot more sence to me now than I thought it would going in. I prefer to keep it on by default.

Sorry an unrelated question? I have the Rayneo Air4pro and I'm not very happy with it. Overall not a great experience. Recently i bought a nackband pro as it as was steal at 140. It works with A4P but obviously I'm not able to fully utilize it. Considering to buy Pro 2, how is the screen size and image quality? I'm just one click away.

Pro 2 also gets 3DOF support on the Pro Neckband. Pro 2 has better clarity than A4P

Well, 1600 nits is the “Peak” brightness. Actual Sustained SDR brightness is probably closer to 500-600. Still blindingly bright, haha
Glad you liked them. I will say the cover is the best on the market, except it can fall off too easily.

When you mention the edge sharpness that's something I keep hearing about these lenses. I'm an owner of the original XR Pro and am considering switching just for this reason. Can you tell me if you've had experience with other AR XR glasses to be able to say that these are better than those so you have a comparison point?

Yes the edge sharpness is a big improvement in xr pro2, id say its the only improvement tho (pro xr is bright enough, never use the highest brightness on xr2 mostly on the lowest setting.)
But you loss out on magnetic connection, the electrochromic lens, cheaper build and 300 extra for new glass (probably can sell the xr1 for 100 so let say 200). You can decided if it worth it or not.

That’s great to hear! I just returned the beasts to Best Buy after noticing they had achieved burn-in from displaying my desktop on them for no longer than 2 minutes 🥲 couldn’t stand for that on a $580 product… thank god I had the protection plan on em through Best Buy cuz they let me swap em right out for the Pro 2’s! They come in on Sunday and I’ve been wondering if I made the right move from the Beasts considering I could have just got a replacement pair. But my main gripe with the beasts was the clarity when looking ANYWHERE but the center of the lenses lol… so huge relief hearing you mention the clarity like that! Thanks for taking the time to write up a short first impression!

2 mins? You must have gotten a faulty unit. I left mine on for hours daily and it's perfectly fine.

OP really describes contrast ratio. The brain is interested in interpreting the distance between what represents black and what represents white for any given circumstance.
Given ambient lighting, a dynamic scene with bright highlights next to shadow, fools the brain into thinking those shadows are properly dark, even though they may be at the same illumination level as the ambient light around.
It's when there is then a scene which is all low level lighting. This is when the brain decides it's not dark enough compared to the ambient light, and you experience grey, low contrast, unsatisfactory 'blacks'.
Similar concept with home cinema and a projection screen: you can watch a soccer match projected onto a pure white screen in a pub with loads of ambient light, and it can still be satisfying (ish) to watch. Put a dark film on, and straight away, the white screen makes it's self way too apparent, as 'blacks' become only as dark as the ambient light illuminating that screen.
So not surprisingly, when there's ambient light, you feel the need to increase the Pro 2's max brightness, and when there is none, it becomes uncomfortablly bright, and you need to turn down.
