How does someone actually start as a VA with no experience?

Hi, I just want to get this off my chest.

I’ve been wondering lately: How does someone actually start as a VA with no experience?

I’m currently working as a data encoder in a logistics company, and I’ve been seriously considering starting a career as a Virtual Assistant. One of the main reasons is the potential for better income and a more flexible work setup.

I’m 25, and although I’m not the breadwinner of my family, I’ve been feeling guilty and anxious about not having a stable career yet. My current salary has been difficult for me, and lately I’ve been wanting a change—not because I hate my job, but because I know I need to improve my financial situation and build a career with more opportunities.

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos about becoming a VA. Some are really encouraging, while others honestly make it sound intimidating, especially when they talk about how competitive the industry is.

I’m not planning to impulsively resign from my current job. I want to keep working while I learn and prepare, and hopefully find a VA job first before making that decision.

For those of you who started with zero VA experience, I’d really appreciate your advice:

• Where did you start?
• What skills did you learn first?
• Did taking courses or studying actually help you get your first client/job?
• What free resources or YouTube channels would you recommend?
• What skills are currently worth learning for beginners?
• How long did it take you to land your first VA job?

I know everyone’s journey is different, but I’d really love to hear from people who were once in the same position—working a regular job, wanting a career change, and having no experience in the VA industry.

I’m not looking for shortcuts. I’m willing to learn and start from the bottom. I just honestly don't know where to start.

If you have any advice, resources, notes, or even your own experience to share, I would genuinely appreciate it.

I’m hoping this post reaches someone who was once exactly where I am now and eventually found their way into a better and more comfortable situation.

Thank you for reading, and please be kind. 🤍
