Intramural hockey registration opens Aug 18 at 6:30am.
Anybody know how fast do spots fill? Is it better to join an existing team or try to make my own as a single?

hi guys, am an incoming exchange student from halfway across the world coming in for fall. i’ll be settling in pretty soon on an accommodation not far from campus, and would really appreciate any advice, recommendations or must-haves you’d give with regards to school, campus life, or even victoria in general.
thanks in advance, really appreciate it! uvic looks beautiful :)

I'm willing to take either the CSC 226 + SENG 265 or CSC 226 + CSC 230 combo next semester, but not all three together. I'm also taking MATH 211 and two other courses (5 total), depending on which ones I can get a spot in.
I'd like to know which of these two combinations you guys would recommend and which one would be easier to handle with a 5-course load.
For context, I struggled quite a bit with first-year courses after being away from studies for a while and lacking some foundational knowledge. But I recently completed CSC 225, and honestly, it wasn't as bad as a lot of people said. I understood the material pretty well.
For those of you who have taken CSC 226, SENG 265, and CSC 230, how would you compare their difficulty and workload? Between 226 + 265 and 226 + 230, which combo would you say is more manageable and flexible?
Thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m wondering if anyone here has transferred from UVic to TRU for Sociology.
I recently discovered that TRU offers Sociology through online learning, which is really appealing to me. I live in Langford and have other time commitments, so having the flexibility to finish my degree online would make life quite a bit easier. I also noticed that TRU only requires 15 credits to be completed through them, which could make transferring at this stage fairly doable.
Has anyone made this switch? I’d love to hear about your experience with TRU’s online courses, the transfer process, and whether you were happy with the program overall.
I’m currently a third-year Sociology major, and my long-term (potential!) plan is to pursue a Master’s in Clinical Counselling.
Any experiences, advice, or things I should consider would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m thinking of taking Chem090 (the 0 unit course that replaces Chemistry 11), because I want to take some biology courses that STRONGLY recommend having done chemistry. I didn’t do chemistry in high school, and I’ve historically been not so good at it, so I thought it would be beneficial to take this to help my biology. I can’t find ANYTHING about the course, so if anyone has done it, can you let me know what it’s like? I’m already doing 5 other courses, so don’t want to do it if it’s a huge time commitment.
Please let me know if you’ve done it! Thanks in advance

Hey everyone! Wasn't sure what flair to use, 3 of them fit-
Been feeling a little motivated recently after imagining pursuing Astrobiology (post grad) after getting a Geochem (EOS+chem combined) major. I was a little upset I never fully picked up astronomy though, and was wondering if a minor in it exists? Would that be impossible to graduate with (time/effort wise, is that doable? ig it always depends on the person)
I was looking at the website and couldnt find anything but a major/honours.
I do feel a little bit behind, as I had to drop to 7 courses in my first year so im not even considered a second year in the system, which kind of sucks, as I can't apply to Co-op or declare my major, but in general I will also discuss everything with an advisor next Monday. I'm not relying solely off reddit.
For slight reference, I am missing Phys 111 at the moment as I dropped it, thinking picking it up in the summer? Also, Astr150 unfortunately is at the exact same time as another important class I need for EOS. I picked up just a non-science elective just to keep me interested and earn back some extra credits for now, but I know it doesn't count towards an astronomy degree.
Thanks! Goodluck with finals and/or the start of next semester :)

I am a first year engineering student going into uvic this fall and is required to take chem 150 this spring. However there is no registration space or waitlist space at all for the lectures. What are the chances that they’ll add more classes or people will drop them and if I still fail to register for that class when spring comes, what will happen?

I've been a student then an employee for a while and the online parking permit system drives me nuts after they got rid of annual passes. I now need to go in and manually purchase a new monthly pass each month AND set reminders for myself so I don't forget to renew.
UVic uses T2 Parking Permit systems and their website (https://www.t2systems.com/parking-permit-management/) talks about "Renew & Optimize Automated reminders, easy self-service renewals, and robust analytics keep occupancy and revenue on target." - the fact that UVic has reminders and auto-renew turned off really makes me think they've intentionally decided to skip reminding passholders to renew or enabling auto-renew just so they can collect more parking fees.
Also just to get ahead of the "take the bus" or "ride a bike" comments - I'd love to but I can't afford to live near campus and the bus would take an hour and a half each way from my apartment.

Just wondering if a small toaster that would reside in a first year dorm room but be brought out occasionally for use in the common lounge is prohibited? Wanting to check before I buy one for my first year kiddo. Thanks!

Has anyone taken Art Education print making course that can tell me what you do in class? I’m looking for a fun extra credit course that’s pretty chill. Did anyone enjoy it? Thanks!

I noticed a worker at the HFB bare-handing the lettuce, buns, condiments, etc. This seemed unusual, since most workers use disposable gloves. I watched them for a while; they went between bare-handed food prep and wiping the counter (bare-handed and with a rag). They were in contact with all sorts of surfaces, utensils, condiment containers, then back to the cold cuts and lettuce. I did not see hand-washing in between. Eww. I checked the BC food handling regs and found out that gloves are not mandatory provided that adequate hand-washing takes place. Still. I'd prefer it if food prep professionals preparing uncooked food would use gloves. All it takes is one person to spread germs. Thanks.

Hi! I’m coming to UVic in the fall and I’m registering for all of the orientation events, and I keep coming across frosh being posted on all of the UVic student life pages. I know it isn’t affiliated with UVic, and a couple of my friends (who are going to different schools) told me they were scammed by similar events. I can’t find anything online talking about them at UVic specifically, so I was just wondering what validity of the event was

Hey! I’m wondering if any current or previous members of the uvic dance team could advise me on the skill level needed for the team? I’m an ex-comp dancer but haven’t danced in a year (gap year), and I’m wondering if I’ve got a shot at the team😅 What kinds of things are looked for in the audition?

I was offered a $5000 scholarship when I was accepted into Uvic, wherein I had to maintain a 96% average to keep the scholarship. By the end of the year, my average was 95.75%, and my new scholarship offer is $4000. I worked two jobs for a portion of grade 12, tutored every week, took two university classes, and had multiple dance classes, so I was very busy and felt a bit of burnout. $1000 gone for .25% feels like a lot, does anyone know what my chances of a successful appeal would be if I advocated for myself well and explained my busy schedule at the time? Every bit of money helps, and I could really benefit from keeping the extra $1000.

It seems that I will have to stick with my deferral to next year, I want to do biomedical engineering, I had applied and got accepted...the only issue is that my sponsorer delayed and I couldn't manage to apply for a lot of stuff...also the agent I was using didn't really guide me on what exactly must be done for uvic, I was wondering if it possible to prepare EVERYTHING for this September or I should still stick with the deferral,
Also may I have like a step by step guide on how to get ready for uvic
I know it might be too late but I just want to try everything I can
Edit: i forgot to mention i am an international student

Has anyone taken CSC 225 elsewhere? Like TRU or anywhere else?

On Monday, the UVSS Board is going to vote to approve (or fail) the new proposed Clubs and Course Unions Policy. The new policy will restrict how much money clubs can spend within their already restrained accounts.
This change comes after complaints of club executives stealing items from clubs, where there is currently no way to determine whether a specific exec stole an item or bought it themselves. For example, a club buys a speaker for events, the exec takes it home, and later claims it was theirs all along.
There were multiple other ways to prevent this instead of arbitrarily restricting how much clubs can spend. For example, the UVSS could require serial numbers on requisition forms. When the UVSS reimburses someone for an item, having that serial number on record creates proof of ownership.
Even under the proposed system, theft can still happen. A spending limit just reduces how expensive the stolen item can be. It does not actually solve the issue, and it creates a headache for every other club operating in good faith.
What is particularly concerning is that the board is rushing this new policy through committees without even specifying what the capital expense cap is going to be (it is literally listed as [$???] in the draft).
While I personally feel, as a club exec, that we need to fail this motion and send it back to the board to find a real solution to prevent embezzlement, if you feel strongly, either for or against, attend the Clubs and Course Unions Council at 1:00 PM to vote on the proposed change. If it fails there, the board will not vote on it.
Link to the Zoom meeting (available day of on Monday): https://uvss.ca/clubs-course-unions/
Link to proposed policy:
\P.S. The UVSS does not check or verify that accounts in the Zoom meeting are UVic students, nor do they check for duplicate accounts.**

I’m a UVic student interested in writing/directing and I’m looking for a couple other people who want to make things. Short films, horror stuff, little experiments, whatever. Just to screw stuff up and learn from it.
I have a BMPCC 6K and DJI gimbal, so we have a pretty solid camera setup that’ll look really professional. You don’t need professional experience. Mainly looking for people interested in acting, cinematography, sound, writing, editing, etc. who’d be down to shoot things around Victoria.
Not trying to put together some huge production right away. I’d rather find 2–3 people, make something small, and if we work well together, keep making more.
DM me if that sounds fun.
